According to 20th Century Fox, this time around, the hard-luck detective will team up with his grown-up son as they find themselves in the midst of an international conspiracy that would make Vladimir Putin's head explode.

Story: Yippie-ki-yay, a new 'Die Hard ' is on the way

"Since the first 'Die Hard' in 1988, John McClane has found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, with the skills and attitude to always be the last man standing, making him enemy number one for terrorists the world over," the studio said in a statement.

"Now, McClane faces his greatest challenge ever, this time on an international stage, when his estranged son Jack is caught up in the daring prison escape of a rogue Russian leader, and father and son McClane must work together to keep each other alive and keep the world safe for democracy."

Jack briefly popped up in the first film as a 4-year-old boy and was mentioned, but not seen, in the fourth chapter, 2007's "Live Free or Die Hard," during a scene with McClane and his estranged daughter Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

"A Good Day to Die Hard," which is being directed by John Moore ("Max Payne") and as far as we know not in 3D, starts shooting in January in Russia and rumbles into theaters in 2013.

First physical evidence bilingualism delays onset of Alzheimer's symptoms

ScienceDaily (Oct. 13, 2011) ? Researchers at St. Michael's Hospital have found that people who speak more than one language have twice as much brain damage as unilingual people before they exhibit symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. It's the first physical evidence that bilingualism delays the onset of the disease.

"This is unheard of -- no medicine comes close to delaying the onset of symptoms and now we have the evidence to prove this at the neuroanatomical level," said Dr. Tom Schweizer, a neuroscientist who headed the research.

Dr. Schweizer's team studied CT scans of patients who had been diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease and who had similar levels of education and cognitive skills, such as attention, memory, planning and organization. Half were fluently bilingual; the other half unilingual.

Despite the fact that both groups performed equivalently on all measures of cognitive performance, the scans of the bilingual patients showed twice as much atrophy in areas of the brain known to be affected by Alzheimer's.

The findings have been published on-line in the journal Cortex.

Dr. Schweizer said that bilingual people are constantly using their brain and keeping it active, which may contribute to overall brain health. That's why many physicians encourage older people to do crossword puzzles or Sudoku.

Dr. Schweizer said that because bilingual people constantly switch from one language to another or suppress one language to speak in the other, their brains may be better prepared to compensate through enhanced brain networks or pathways when Alzheimer's sets in.

Previous observational studies have found that bilingualism delays the onset of Alzheimer's symptoms by up to five years, but this is the first to find physical proof through CT scans.

Dr. Schweizer said the results are especially important in Canada, which is officially bilingual and has large numbers of immigrants for whom French and English are at least second languages. His study was conducted in Toronto, where the second language of many study participants was French, English or Chinese.

Dr. Schweizer noted that bilingualism does not prevent Alzheimer's. Once Alzheimer's symptoms appear in bilingual people, it is not clear whether the disease progresses at an accelerated rate.

He said the next steps would be to repeat the study in a larger sample of patients followed over time using more sophisticated MRIs. He said it wasn't clear from this study whether a second language had to be learned early in life to provide maximum benefit.

Oil prices rise near $87 as recession fears ease

(AP) ? A series of encouraging economic reports sparked oil prices Friday, pushing the benchmark to the highest level in nearly a month.

Investors shrugged off declining oil demand forecasts that came out earlier this week and focused instead on growing U.S. consumer spending, a rise in bank lending in China and a meeting of world leaders to discuss Europe's debt crisis.

"You're seeing one big sigh of relief" across world financial markets, independent analyst Jim Ritterbusch said. "Three weeks ago, it looked like we were definitely headed for a recession."

Benchmark crude rose $2.57, or 3.1 percent, to end at $86.80 per barrel in New York. That's the highest level since Sept. 20.

Brent crude, which is used to price oil from foreign countries, rose $3.57, or 3.2 percent, to finish at $114.68 in London.

Prices jumped after China said its inflation rate dropped last month, giving Chinese leaders room to further stimulate the country's economy without overheating it.

This week China reported a slowdown in exports, raising concerns that sluggish demand from the U.S. and Europe was taking a toll on the world's second-largest economy. But with lower inflation, analysts said China has the ability to ease limits on bank lending to keep its economy growing.

In the U.S., consumers spent more on cars, clothing and furniture last month. Consumer spending, which drives the U.S. economy, pushed retail sales up 1.1 percent in September, the biggest gain in seven months.

Financial leaders of the world's largest economies were meeting in Paris to discuss how to resolve Europe's debt crisis. The Group of 20 is expected to address ways to save Greece from bankruptcy and kick-start European economies.

In other energy commodities trading, heating oil rose 8.4 cents to end at $3.0558 per gallon and gasoline futures increased 6.7 cents to finish at $2.8247 per gallon. Natural gas rose 17.2 cents to end the day at $3.703 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Elderly Abuse in nursing homes - Home Improvement Guide

Elderly abuse in nursing homes, is not a fiction. According to the 2007 Laing and Buisson survey there are over 420,000 people living in nursing homes, where many Elderly abuse in nursing homes does exist. These numbers are rising and you would be very shocked at what levels abuse is taking place. From medication misuse and care negligence to shocking incidences of horrific neglect which have resulted in death.

If a nursing home falls below a standard of acceptable care that it provides its residents then the safety and welfare of it?s residents are at stake. If this happens then Care Home Negligence could be an issue and something needs to be done about it. One of the difficulties facing those who suspect Elderly abuse in nursing homes is knowing how to prove it. This is a very sensitive issue but there is lots of help available to all concerned.

Kinds of Elderly Abuse in Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are supposed to be tranquil homes of rest and relaxation for the elderly. Unfortunately, not all nursing homes meet the idealized standards they seek to achieve. Furthermore, some situations not only fail to meet elevated standards but also provide Elderly abuse in nursing homes. Laws in the United States seek to protect residents? rights, although the law can only protect the elderly if people speak out for them.

Elderly abuse in nursing homes are usually easier to spot than neglect, simply because abuse normally has physical manifestations. Broken bones, cuts, scars, abrasions, and bed sores are all clues of abuse. Neglect is more subtle and difficult to spot. Potential examples of neglect include insufficient food, water, and bathing opportunities, failure to properly assist an elderly person who needs assistance eating, drinking, or bathing, and failure to supply adequate supplies such as soap or shampoo. If you suspect your loved one in condition Elderly abuse in nursing homes or neglected, it is recommended to speak with them to find out as much information as possible.

Elderly Abuse in Nursing Homes

The elderly are easy victims for abuse. They are not strong, they are not always clear-thinking and, because they are often at the mercy of other people, they are afraid to report when they are being abused for fear of reprisal.

Obviously the isolation a nursing home provides creates opportunity for abuse but, motives are more difficult to ascertain. Further, a high percentage of homes fail basic scrutiny by the government yet they are allowed to stay in business.

Examining nursing homes and the abuse they bring to the elderly may reveal some answers.

  1. History

    • 85-year-old woman

Historically families would care for their elderly at home. However, with the early 20th-century economic crash, they often would have to relegate them to nursing homes or ?poor farms.?

Nursing homes were less than desirable in their beginnings. They were mostly state-sponsored ?poor farms? where people went when they had no other place to go.

The nursing home industry has followed the course of mainstream federal benefits, specifically Social Security. As Social Security benefits became more comprehensive, nursing homes graduated from ?poor farms? to more acceptable facilities.
No longer did elderly care consist only of government facilities, now private nursing homes could get payment for housing a person.

    Types

    • There are different types of nursing homes. There are ?retirement communities? where people who have money and are in reasonably good health go to live. These are often along the lines of condominiums.

Another kind of housing is a nursing home with apartments where the people once again are in good physical condition. Usually everyone is housed in apartments in one building and health care is close by.

The nursing home most people think about when considering the subject is the nursing home where the majority of the population is aged and most everyone has some kind of medical condition.

    Misconceptions

    • Society thinks that once a person is in a nursing home they are well taken care of, that their families routinely keep an eye on them. Often neither of these points is true.

Even though Social Security benefits are used to pay housing fees, family members can have the check given to them, creating the possibility of non-payment.

    Warning

    • In 2008 a report by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services revealed that more than 90 percent of nursing homes were cited for health or safety violations. Further, it has been revealed that background checks for nursing home employees are not thorough enough. Pay for workers at a nursing home is usually low, attracting workers who have nowhere else to turn.

Once families have placed their family member in the nursing home they often feel relieved and do not visit.

    Considerations

    • Nursing home workers often must perform functions that are disgusting such as cleaning up bodily functions. Fellow residents may bully a resident. Family members may resent the fact that they are saddled with keeping an eye on a family member. All of these situations can result in abuse and most of the time an elderly person will not report it because they know they will get abused more if they do.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Surveillance Camera Surveying Surveillance Room

Suspicious circumstances must be videotaped by an immovable surveillance camera and reviewed on a periodic basis. It should be reviewed by a third party but paid for by the nursing home.

U.S. to require travel declarations of value cards

The rule, unveiled on Wednesday, is not expected to have a substantial impact on ordinary travelers, many of whom use debit or credit cards when overseas, but there are questions about how it can be enforced.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Ryanair's latest plan: replace toilets with seats

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary has a new scheme for saving money at the discount airline: take out the toilets.

    2. No boys allowed! Hotels offer women-only floors
    3. Woman sues airline over 'extreme turbulence'
    4. AirTran adopting 'customers of size' policy
    5. Layover? More hotels opening in airports

The rule represents an effort to get ahead of what law enforcement officials and others fear could be significant new digital tactics in international money laundering by drug dealers, militant groups and others.

"The proposal is intended to address certain devices that can be used as a substitute for currency, as they provide access to funds by any bearer of the device. This product attribute ... may enable the anonymous transfer or concealed transport of illicit funds across the U.S. border," the Treasury department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or FinCEN, said in issuing the proposed rule.

Travelers crossing U.S. borders only file a Treasury report if they are carrying more than $10,000 in cash or travelers checks.

The proposal would add prepaid devices -- such as prepaid cards, gift cards, and potentially cell phones -- to the list of "monetary instruments" whose value must be aggregated. When the total exceeds $10,000, the traveler would have to file a Currency and Monetary Instrument Report (CMIR) under the Bank Secrecy Act, a U.S. law aimed at combating money laundering and tax evasion.

Credit cards and debit cards, which are considered more visible to law enforcement, are exempt from the rule.

Authorities have been unable to estimate how extensively prepaid access devices are used for money smuggling. The Government Accountability Office last year said, "The nature and extent of the use of stored value for cross-border currency smuggling and other illegal activities remains unknown, but federal law enforcement agencies are concerned about its use."

A U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he has seen examples of drug traffickers loading funds onto prepaid cards in the United States and withdrawing the funds in Colombia, or buying gift cards in bulk and shipping them overseas where they can be sold for "clean" money. However, he said such documented instances were rare.

Treasury has been under pressure to make prepaid devices subject to reporting requirements. Three members of the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control, Dianne Feinstein of California, Charles Grassley of Iowa Island and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, demanded such a move in a sharply worded letter sent in March to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.

FinCEN has struggled with drafting regulations to bring the prepaid access industry into the anti-money laundering (AML) fold, as required by 2009 legislation. In July, it issued a long-overdue rule forcing providers and retailers of prepaid access to enact anti money-laundering programs.

ENFORCEMENT

It is unclear how U.S. Customs and Border Protection would enforce the new reporting requirement since technology capable of "reading" all prepaid access devices to determine how much money is on them does not yet exist, said a former Treasury and Justice Department official, also speaking on condition of anonymity.

Others have said the rule is a wasted effort, since industry-imposed limits on the amount of cash that can be "loaded" onto prepaid devices and withdrawn overseas make widespread abuses by drug traffickers and others unlikely.

Alan Schroeder: Debate at Dartmouth: Jobs, Economics and the GOP

Heading into the Republican debate at Dartmouth College, several key storylines had taken root. For Rick Perry, it was a need to counteract his ineptitude in previous debates. For Herman Cain, it was an opportunity to capitalize on recent gains in the polls. For Mitt Romney, it was sustaining the presidential aura that has allowed him to dominate these Republican primary debates without breaking a sweat.

At the end of the Dartmouth debate, here's what we know: Rick Perry neither stumbled nor shone. Cain basked in the spotlight but ultimately did not have much to say. And Romney maintained his status as alpha dog of the 2012 Republican field.

? Rick Perry: Expectations for Perry were so low that all he had to do in this debate was avoid babbling like a fool. He did not babble like a fool, but neither did he dispel the doubts that have arisen about his seaworthiness as a presidential contender. Perry spoke more in platitudes than specifics, and he was strangely unwilling to offer details about his economic proposals, even though economics was the theme of the evening. Perhaps because of excessive pre-debate coaching, Perry's personality seemed more restrained than usual, and though he survived the debate intact, what he really needed was a reversal of fortune.

? Herman Cain: Cain's newfound second-place status brought one visible change: a more prestigious piece of real estate on the debate stage. Wedged between Mitt Romney and Rick Perry, Cain came across as more of a major player than in previous debates, and his "9-9-9 plan" received plenty of air time. Yet he does not appear able to advance his rhetoric beyond the bumper sticker level. The appeal of Cain's candidacy hinges in large measure on his ability to talk common sense to people who want to hear a simple, reassuring message. By definition, however, this also means painting in excessively broad strokes. If Cain is to advance as a serious contender, he needs desperately to widen -- and deepen -- his repertoire.

? Mitt Romney: At Dartmouth, Romney turned in yet another solid performance. Romney's fluidity in the debate arena ought to be giving the White House pause. Romney knows how to turn the live nature of these events to his advantage, as illustrated by a couple of off-the-cuff quips he made at the moderator's expense. Furthermore, he can deliver a line like "I'm not worried about rich people" with a straight face, even though everything about the man reeks of Wall Street.

Unlike previous Republican debates, the Dartmouth encounter focused exclusively on jobs and the economy, which lent the program an air of respectability that has been absent from the past few gatherings. In fairness, it must be added that this debate was also a lot less lively than its predecessors. Another difference: this time the participants were seated around a large table alongside moderator Charlie Rose and two co-questioners, not isolated behind individual lecterns. Romney, in particular, seemed comfortable in this milieu, though with eight candidates and three journalists the table felt awfully crowded.

Bottom line: Rick Perry needed a big night and he didn't have one. Cain needed to push his message beyond the 9-9-9 plan but he couldn't do it. Romney needed to maintain the status quo -- that he managed, and then some.
