Foster parents feel caught by Catholic Charities controversy

Four years after becoming foster parents through Catholic Charities, Susan and Thomas Westcott have watched their family multiply.

Last summer they adopted 6-year-old Scott and 8-year-old Victoria, siblings who were previously abused by family members before entering foster care.

Now the Westcotts fear that Catholic Charities? legal battle with the state over foster care may disrupt progress on their adoption of a third foster child. Other foster families also are worried, they say, after a recent ruling that Catholic Charities does not have a legal right to continue its contract with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services to provide such services.

For the last two years, the Westcotts have sought to adopt their 2 1/2-year-old foster son, who has lived with the family nearly all of his life. Born three months premature and addicted to drugs, the boy, whom the couple declined to name since he is not yet adopted, spent more than four months in the neonatal intensive care unit before the Westcotts brought him to their Pawnee home.

?We?re the only parents and home he?s ever known,? Susan Westcott said. [more]

Playoff pressure: Getting event ready after storm

By DOUG FERGUSON

updated 11:28 a.m. ET Aug. 31, 2011

NORTON, Mass. - Kevin Chappell felt a deep sense of appreciation when he arrived at the TPC Boston for the second FedEx Cup playoff event.

He is among 10 rookies on the PGA Tour who are still hopeful of getting to the Tour Championship for a shot at the $10 million prize. A tie for third at the U.S. Open assured him of his first trip to the Masters next year, and a return to the U.S. Open at The Olympic Club, a short drive from his hometown of Fresno, Calif.

Only his feelings had nothing to do with his playoff performance, or anything else about his game.

Hurricane Irene altered his travel plans, and he showed up at the Deutsche Bank Championship earlier than expected. It gave Chappell a chance to see what a tournament looks like before the show starts ? especially a tournament that had to prepare for a hurricane.

About a week before the tournament was to get under way, workers stripped 95 percent of the signage around the TPC Boston. The green mesh around bleachers and TV towers was removed, leaving a rudimentary appearance of steel poles and wood. Some of the corporate boxes and video boards were either taken down or were delayed going up. And on Monday, there was no power on the golf course.

He registered in the clubhouse ? in the dark.

"It was like a ghost town around here," Chappell said. "It was a little bit humbling to see what goes into tournaments. We get worked up over missing a cut, and it's not the end of the world. You have people out here working their butts off to make sure we have a well-run golf tournament.

"It's pretty special what we get to do."

As he hit balls on the practice range, the sound of power drills could be heard in the distance as the blue-and-white Deutsche Bank signs were being replaced, scoreboards were being erected again. Carts zipped around the course to remove debris from limbs that had fallen in the 50 mph wind and rain on Sunday.

Eric Baldwin, the tournament director, spent Sunday at home with his family ? the pro-am featuring former Boston athletes two days away and players due to arrive. He said it takes about six weeks to get everything ready, with the final week for putting on the finishing touches.

"We still had 25 to 30 tents that we never put up until the storm passed," Baldwin said. "We took down some of the wind screens. We removed 95 percent of the signage. And then we had no power. Our office went offline for two days so we had to set up a temporary office."

The tournament doesn't start until Friday, which helped.

Most of the 99 players in the field began showing up Wednesday for practice rounds. The TPC Boston looked like it always does ? immaculate landscape, grandstands and scoreboards in place, the refrigerators in the locker room humming with electricity, stocked with every kind of drink.

"They will have little to any sense that anything happened," Baldwin said. "That's a testament to all of the guys who do the hard work and never get credit."

The pro-am is Thursday, followed by the opening round on Friday, when players will at least try to get into the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings and advance to the third playoff event in two weeks outside Chicago, one step closer to being in the top 30 at the Tour Championship.

Chappell is at No. 74, putting him on the wrong side of the bubble.

He achieved the first goal of his rookie season by securing his card next year, helped by a runner-up finish at the Texas Open. Then came the U.S. Open, and while never had a chance to win ? no one did at Congressional except Rory McIlroy, who won by eight shots ? Chappell closed with a 66 to tie for third.

He started these FedEx Cup playoffs at No. 88 and went to The Barclays knowing he only had to make the cut to advance to the second round. It was an odd kind of pressure, for Chappell can't recall going into any tournament this year with such a modest goal.

"There were probably a few tournaments ? with where my game was ? that I should have thought about making the cut," he said with a laugh. "But no. It would be hard if you're only goal was to make the cut. I'm on the bubble now, and I've got to jump from that No. 74 spot."

Dustin Johnson won the playoff opener at The Barclays with a 65 in the final round of a 54-hole tournament that was cut short by the hurricane. With the points counting five times as much in the playoffs, he moved to No. 1 on the list, followed by Barclays runner-up Matt Kuchar.

They left behind a course at Plainfield in which several fairways on the back nine had turned into miniature lakes after Irene came through New Jersey. Players and others don't see the work that goes into getting ready for a big PGA Tour event. No one is around to see the cleanup, either.

Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi confirm plans for government-backed LCD joint venture

We had a pretty clear indication that some official word was coming soon, and Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi have now confirmed that they intend to pool their LCD manufacturing efforts and form a new joint venture (expected to be completed by the spring of 2012). That effort is getting a $2.6 billion shot in the arm courtesy of a Japanese government-backed investment fund, which itself will own 70 percent of the new company -- to be dubbed Japan Display -- while Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi will each get a 10 percent share.

NYT: In Seattle, a Starbucks fit for the CEO

The sun is not yet up but the baristas are, a blur of busy hands wiping down counters and smoothing black aprons. Chipper and precise, they work at Starbucks, but it is probably not like the one near where you live. Among the 17,000 Starbucks that caffeinate the planet, this one is special.

This one, in Seattle?s lovely Madison Park neighborhood, is where Howard Schultz, the company?s passionate chief executive, likes to pop in on his way to another day of brand building.

This one serves beer and wine. Prosecco? Of course. French presses are for sale next to the gas fireplace and across from the bins of coffee beans. By all means, sift those beans through your fingers. The jazz is textured but digestible. Shel Silverstein is on the shelf in a section for kids. Mr. Schultz?s recent book, ?Onward: How Starbucks Fought for Its Life Without Losing Its Soul,? is also on display. (Buy it and you receive a $5 gift certificate.) A painting stretched across a long wall says, ?We live in a beautiful world.?

A customer opens the door. It is still dark outside. Eyes turn discreetly.

Not him.

Things pick up.

Not him. Not him. Not him.

Were the baristas looking for their boss, who lives in a ton of house nearby? Were they anxious? Were they freaking out? Is it true that they undergo special scrutiny before they can work there? Do they sometimes wish they worked in one of those apathy-oozing independent coffee shops in an edgier part of town? Surely they have a tattoo or two beneath those buttoned black sleeves, right?

Good luck finding out.

?It?s an honor to work here,? said one, noting his necktie.

No further comment. Call media relations, they say. Call corporate.

Corporate calls first.

They say ?security concerns? make them wary of discussing the fact that ?Howard is there a good bit.? After all, he is a ?high-profile person.?

Mr. Schultz has certainly been a man in the news lately and coffee is not why. In recent weeks he has called for a moratorium on political donations until a long-term debt deal is reached in Congress. He has also prodded other business leaders to take more risks, to do more hiring, to be more assertive in getting the economy going.

No wonder he needs a doppio espresso macchiato each morning.

?He waits in line,? said Patricia Smith, a regular at the store. ?He wears really good shirts, and usually jeans.?

?He?s usually alone,? said Wayne Smith, her husband. ?You can tell he?s looking around.?

Perhaps he will notice the man reading ?Design as Art,? by Bruno Munari. Hopefully he will not witness the kind of mix-up that caused the Smiths to wait extra long for their ?double tall soy half-caff lattes with no lids.?

?Really, this has happened once in five years,? Mr. Smith said.

They received coupons for free drinks. ?The baristas here are so friendly,? Ms. Smith said.

Corporate calls back, warmer this time. They say the employees at the Madison Park Starbucks are hired through normal channels. They note that the store, recently remodeled, is based on ?a palette? that the company has experimented with in a couple of other locations, and that will be applied at 1,700 stores next year.

Only a handful of Starbucks stores will sell alcohol, said a spokesman for the company, Corey duBrowa. But their baristas had better perfect those doppio espresso macchiatos. Mr. Schultz visits up to 20 Starbucks stores a week in Seattle.

?And he always orders the same thing,? Mr. duBrowa said.

Your First Venture into Real Estate Foreclosures | Street Smart ...

Your First Venture into Real Estate Foreclosures

Owning real estate foreclosures is an easy enough process and it has opened the doors to middle- and low-income families wanting to become home owners. Foreclosures are very affordable, some even go for as low as half of their real market value. There are several government housing assistance programs that can reduce the cost of foreclosures even further. Of course you will only be approved for a housing loan if you are gainfully employed or have the capability to pay off your mortgage. You can always pay for the property in cash if you also have that capability.

Especially for beginners, an online foreclosures listing service is an ideal source of information on real estate foreclosures. Steer clear of free listings as they may not be properly maintained and still have properties that have already been sold. For a minimum subscription fee, you can have access to all foreclosures for sale in every part of the country. These sites also have useful tools and literature to help you along in your decision-making. If you are uncertain which site to subscribe to, find one that has a limited time trial offer. Try to search for foreclosed properties by location, price, home structure and type of foreclosure. See if the reports and other literature provide excellent information on property locations, demographics, livability scales and more.

What You Should Know

At the minimum, an online real estate foreclosures listing should enable you to distinguish pre-foreclosures from bank foreclosures and government foreclosures. You should also know how an auction works or what a short-sale is. In other words learn about the product to know if it suits you. You should always proceed with caution when you are investing you life-long savings or committing to a potentially burdensome obligation, especially if it can yield highly satisfactory results like a foreclosure property.

Joseph B. Smith has been educating buyers on the finer points of real estate foreclosures at BankForeclosuresSale.com for over ten years. Contact Joseph B. Smith through BankForeclosuresSale.com if you need help finding information about real estate foreclosures.

From mild-mannered to killer plague

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

In the evolutionary blink of an eye, a bacterium that causes mild stomach irritation evolved into a deadly assassin responsible for the most devastating pandemics in human history. How did the mild-mannered Yersinia pseudotuberculosis become Yersinia pestis, more commonly known as the Plague?

Now, scientists from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, with the use of new DNA sequencing techniques, offer long sought after evidence of how these two pathogens with virtually identical genetic matter could produce two such vastly different diseases. The Feinberg School team used the new DNA sequencing techniques to identify an unexpected source for these differences, which may help explain the Plague's rapid evolution.

The findings, to be published Aug. 29 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, offer a glimpse into how the new technology might aid in the development of therapeutics to fight deadly diseases, including the Plague.

"Most people think of the Plague as a historic disease, but it's still a public health issue today, both in the human population and in animals," said Wyndham Lathem, lead author of the study and assistant professor of microbiology-immunology at Northwestern's Feinberg School. "It's extremely dangerous and highly virulent. Without treatment, it can take as little as three to five days from infection to death."

Globally, the World Health Organization reports 1,000 to 3,000 cases of Plague every year, and Y. pestis exists on every continent except Antarctica. The United States Department of Homeland Security classifies Y. pestis as a Category A biological agent, a group that also includes anthrax, smallpox and Ebola.

The Plague's ancestor, Y. pseudotuberculosis, still exists and infects humans, but it causes a mild gastrointestinal disease and most people don't show symptoms.

Lathem and colleagues have discovered the differences in disease severity between these two subspecies may have arisen from changes in small, non-coding RNAs (sRNAs), complex molecules involved in controlling many cellular processes.

The Northwestern team is the first to show that sRNAs in Yersinia affect virulence, a finding that suggests the evolution of pathogens may also occur at the level of changes in RNA and in the way protein-coding genes are regulated.

Lathem used advanced DNA sequencing technology ? called high-throughput sequencing ? to identify the complete set of sRNAs produced by Y. pseudotuberculosis. The technology enabled his team to study the diseases for the first time at a deeper genetic level.

"This technique enables us to really pick apart how pathogens evolve and how different species of bacteria are able to cause different types of disease," Lathem said. "It goes beyond looking at what proteins are produced by the bacteria. It's an additional layer of evolutionary analysis."

This detective work is important because if researchers can identify unique characteristics among deadly species such as Y. pestis, they may be able to generate new therapeutics or adapt current ones.

Unlike traditional "messenger" RNA, which is copied from DNA to create proteins and is well understood by scientists, these non-coding sRNA molecules are never translated into proteins. Hundreds of noncoding RNA molecules exist inside bacterial cells, but, until recently, scientists had not determined the function of many.

"Once we identified the complete set of sRNAs for Y. pseudotuberculosis, further analysis unlocked a number of surprising discoveries about their function," Lathem said.

Among these surprising discoveries, Lathem's team identified 150 sRNAs, a majority of which are specific to the Yersinia species, and six sRNAs unique to Y. pseudotuberculosis. Those six sRNAs are missing in Y. pestis, likely lost during its rapid evolution (somewhere between 1,500 and 20,000 years ago), and thereby potentially responsible for the Plague's virulence. Lathem's team developed this explanation because they could specify exactly which genes the sRNAs control.

First author Jovanka Koo, a postdoctoral fellow in Lathem's lab at Feinberg, noted, "An important lesson is that small changes can have big effects on sRNA functions. They can affect when an RNA is expressed or produced, the way that RNA folds, and the ability of that RNA to affect the regulated protein coding RNA." Over time, those small changes can become the difference between mild and deadly diseases.

UK private healthcare market to grow 3.4% hitting ... - My Company PR

According to the report Private Healthcare: UK Market Report 2011 the UK market for private healthcare was worth approximately ?30.39bn in 2010. Yearly growth of the overall private healthcare market largely slowed during recession, from in excess of 5% between 2006 and 2008 to 3.8% and 2.9% in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Approximately 16% of the UK population currently has private health insurance and penetration levels are the highest among upper class groups. Consumer research commissioned by the report found a large majority of the UK population to be fiercely loyal towards the National Health Service (NHS), some of it no doubt on ideological grounds, but presumably also due to the large proportion of the population that are priced out of the private healthcare market.

The 129 page report forecasts that the totalUKprivate healthcare market will reach ?35.9bn by 2015, growing at an average annual rate of 3.4%. The long-term care market is expected to remain the largest private healthcare sector and is forecast to reach a value of ?16.2bn in 2015.
