JERUSALEM (AP) ? Militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip bombarded southern Israel with rockets and mortars Sunday, striking an empty school and a score of other targets, as diplomats scrambled to keep a new convulsion of Israeli-Palestinian violence from escalating.

Senior Israeli officials met late into the night to discuss how to proceed with retaliatory operations against Gaza militants, who they say triggered the latest round of hostilities Thursday with a roadside ambush along the Israeli-Egypt border that killed eight Israelis.

Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai said Israel's current response to the surge in violence ? airstrikes that have killed 15 Palestinians, most of them militants ? was not its final word.

Israel "will not hesitate" to widen its military operation if necessary, he told Israel Radio. "We will see how things develop on the ground," he said without elaborating.

At midday, Israeli aircraft struck Gaza once again, the military said. It did not immediate disclose its target. Palestinian hospital officials reported one person was wounded.

Israeli troops also rounded up 50 Hamas activists in the West Bank in a sweeping overnight raid, Palestinian security officials said.

Diplomats scrambled to try to prevent the violence ? the deadliest since Israel went to war against Gaza militants 2 1/2 years ago ? from spiraling out of control.

Yaser Otham, the Egyptian representative to the Palestinian Authority, told Voice of Palestine radio that Cairo was "in contact with all parties to restore the truce in Gaza."

Militant factions in Gaza confirmed the efforts. Talal Abu Tharefeh, spokesman for the small Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said "all the Palestinian factions are interested in restoring the truce in order to protect our people."

Gaza militants have dramatically cut back their attacks on Israel since the war, though the rocket and mortar fire did not cease completely.

Large-scale Israeli military operations against Gaza gunmen would almost certainly create new friction with the Muslim world at a time when Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is preparing to ask the United Nations to recognize an independent Palestinian state.

And pictures of a major Israeli offensive in Gaza could hurt the Jewish state's efforts to minimize world support for the Palestinian statehood bid. The war Israel launched in the seaside strip in late 2008 badly tarnished its international image because of the high civilian death toll.

A spokesman said Abbas' Palestinian Authority planned to use the renewed violence to bolster its case for statehood at the United Nations next month.

"An independent Palestinian state is the remedy for violence," Husam Zomlot said. "It would control its borders and prevent such deterioration from happening."

Abbas, who only rules the West Bank, asserts no such prospective control at this time. Hamas routed his loyalists from Gaza in a violent 2007 takeover, and a reconciliation pact the two sides signed in May has stalled.

Hamas opposes both peacemaking with Israel and Abbas' statehood bid. Israel and the U.S. do not see that largely symbolic route, which Abbas chose after a prolonged deadlock in negotiations, as a way out of decades of violence that reignited last week.

Since Thursday's ambush, militants have fired some 100 rockets and mortars on southern Israel, killing an Israeli man and seriously wounding two other people on Saturday. No serious injuries were reported Sunday.

Egypt was drawn into the current round of violence after at least three of its security forces were killed as Israeli troops pursued militants involved in the ambush along the Israel-Egypt border. Cairo initially threatened to withdraw its ambassador to Israel but relented after Israel apologized.

Diplomats in Cairo and Jerusalem said the U.S., France and Germany had worked with the Israelis and Egyptians to end the diplomatic spat. They spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts.

In the Egyptian capital, however, popular anger against Israel simmered, and protesters gathered outside the Israeli Embassy for a third day on Sunday, demanding the expulsion of the Israeli envoy who is now vacationing abroad.

For Recreation, Sports Collecting is a Great Hobby ? Flickrz ...

In this fast-paced, stressful age we live in, everyone needs a little recreation. Sports collecting is a hobby that can fill your spare minutes with interest and offer a diversion to the everyday grind. Sports collecting takes many forms depending on the person who is pursuing the hobby. Many people choose to collect memorabilia from their favorite professional teams, but others collect items related to golf, fishing, and other recreation sports. Collecting requires a certain amount of space, but collectors are creative about finding ways to display their collectibles.

If you have a favorite pro team or two there are many items you can collect related to those teams. For instance, you can create scrapbooks in which you save clippings about exciting games, favorite players, and special interviews. You can keep ticket stubs and photographs in your scrapbook, too. Other items, however, won?t fit into a scrapbook, such as a game ball, team jersey, or a team?s annual yearbook. These items will need other storage. There are stands for special balls, and jerseys look great hanging on a hanger on the wall.

You might like to collect souvenir items from all types of sports. Most professional teams sell small metal pins with their insignia on them. Pin collecting is a widely practiced hobby, and sports teams are one of the hottest types of collectible pins, as are those commemorating the Olympics. Another option for sports collecting is to collect antique sports equipment. Vintage baseball gloves are an example of this type of collectible.

Baseball cards have long been a source of recreation. Sports collecting enthusiasts have collected baseball cards, football cards, and basketball cards for many years, although baseball cards were the first. This is such a popular hobby that some cards are worth a lot of money, such as a rookie card of a player like Willie Mays.

Other collectors like to accumulate things that illustrate their favorite recreation sports. Collecting items decorated with fish, horses, or golfers are examples of these types of collections. For instance, if you enjoy hunting with dogs, you can decorate your home in a hunting dog theme. There are throw pillows printed with handsome hunting dogs, as well as with the game they help you find. You may find lamps that have a hunting dog as the base. You can even have curtains made from hunting dog printed material! The same can be done around the theme of golf, horseback riding, whether western or eastern, bass fishing, sailboats, and other popular recreation sports. Collecting is a hobby that offers many options!

Not-for-profit organizations on the Missouri side of the St. Louis region the did very well in Toyota?s just completed ?100 Cars for Good? contest.

Here was the announcement of the finalists in April:

April 25, 2011

Toyota Announces Finalists in 100 Cars for Good Program

? 500 nonprofits selected as finalists in the Toyota 100 Cars for Good program

? 100 vehicles will be given away over 100 days based on daily voting on Toyota?s Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/toyota

? Public voting will begin on May 9, 2011 and will take place for 100 consecutive days

TORRANCE, CALIF. (April 25, 2011) ? Toyota today announced the 500 nonprofit organizations selected as finalists in the ?100 Cars for Good? program, which will award 100 vehicles over the course of 100 days to 100 deserving nonprofit organizations based on votes from the public.

Toyota?s 100 Cars for Good initiative engages the public to determine the 100 organizations to receive a Toyota vehicle for use in the community. The 500 finalists, selected from a pool of applications submitted via Toyota?s Facebook page from March 7-21, 2011, were chosen by an independent panel of judges who are experts in the fields of philanthropy and corporate social responsibility. The finalists represent non-profit organizations servicing the community across a broad range of categories including animal welfare, arts, education, environment, health, safety and human services, among others.

Finalists will create an online profile, which may include a video showcasing how the organization plans to use a new Toyota vehicle to do good in their local community. Starting May 9, public voting will begin and take place for 100 consecutive days, with five organizations profiled on Toyota?s Facebook page each day. The public may vote for the charity they feel is most deserving based on the created profiles. A vehicle will be awarded daily through August 16 for a total of 100 vehicles. Voters may place one vote per day, each day, over the course of the program. Winning organizations can choose from the following vehicles: Toyota Prius, Tacoma, Tundra, Highlander Hybrid, Sienna, or Sienna Mobility. With each vehicle, Toyota Financial Services will provide a six-year 100,000 mile Toyota Vehicle Service Agreement to help provide extended protection from mechanical breakdowns beyond the vehicle warranty.

For a complete list of finalists, please visit www.facebook.com/toyota.

The following are the five winners in Missouri, all from the greater St. Louis area:

About us:

The St. Louis Area Foodbank (SLAFB) feeds hungry people by acquiring and distributing food through our member agencies, and educates the public about the nature of and solutions to the problems of hunger. We believe that our mission aligns with Toyota?s goal to allow each individual to live with dignity and hope. By providing quality food items, in a dignified manner to people in need, we alleviate hunger while instilling hope. 261,000 unduplicated individuals rely on the SLAFB annually, of which 101,790 are children?the largest demographic served (39%). In calendar year 2010, SLAFB distributed over 23 million pounds of product through 500 member agencies.

How we would use a new Toyota:

A new Toyota vehicle would be utilized by the SLAFB to more efficiently establish partnerships throughout our service territory in order to further our mission. SLAFB partners with 500 agencies in 26 Missouri and Illinois counties to feed hungry people. Agencies include food pantries, emergency shelters, residential facilities and soup kitchens. Agency Relations staff work closely with representatives of our partner agencies, which requires driving their personal vehicles within an expansive 14,173 square mile service territory in the bi-state region. In fact, Finance projects that a new Toyota vehicle would save the organization nearly 30% in mileage reimbursements annually.

About us:

Mission: St. Louis fights poverty one neighborhood at a time, walking alongside people as they help themselves. While increasing home safety by providing free repairs, we build relationships. As we improve families? surroundings, we also focus on long-term empowerment. We help people find employment so that they can provide for their families. In order to help break the cycle of poverty, we read with children to increase literacy and bolster educational success. Through a holistic approach that addresses education, empowerment, and economic development, Mission: St. Louis seeks to transform neighborhoods into safe and nurturing environments for all people. Vote for Mission: St. Louis!

How we would use a new Toyota:

The Mission: St. Louis home repair program makes vital steps toward improving the safety of families. Currently, Mission: St. Louis does $6 in home repairs for every $1 spent on materials. We secure many thousands of dollars in donated goods, and we have a warehouse to store these materials until needed. However, we are limited by lack of transportation. A truck will help us get materials to the warehouse and get them to homes where they can be used to create safe living environments. With a truck, we can repair more homes. We can build more relationships. We can help more people get jobs, provide for their families, and build stronger neighborhoods. Vote for Mission: St. Louis!

About us:

In 1978, several women from the community created Lincoln County Council on Aging to meet the needs of local seniors and disabled adults. The agency has grown from one center serving Troy, to four centers (Winfield, Silex and Elsberry) serving all of Lincoln County. The county has a large rural population and for many of the agency?s clients, participating in the home delivered meal program provides the support needed to remain in their own home. The four centers offer a wide variety of activities to promote socialization, education and general well being. Lincoln County Council on Aging promotes independence and dignity while encouraging clients to enjoy each day with quality of life.

How we would use a new Toyota:

Lincoln County Council on Aging?s fleet of vehicles? average age is fourteen years old. Most are donated and require frequent major repairs. Driving rural routes quickly adds miles to the vehicles. They are less fuel efficient and increase the agency?s vehicle expense. A new Toyota vehicle would improve the safety and comfort for our volunteers, staff and clients. In November 2010, the agency?s main vehicle was totaled in an accident ? leaving us with less reliable transportation for our volunteer drivers and our clients. A Toyota vehicle would reduce cost for repairs, fuel and maintenance. This savings would allow us to expand meal routes thereby, reaching more clients in need.

?

About us:

Friends of Kids with Cancer is devoted to enriching the daily lives of children undergoing treatment for cancer and blood related diseases by providing them and their families with the recreational, educational, and emotional support needed throughout the long hours of chemotherapy, illness and isolation. Friends engages minds, instills confidence and, most importantly, helps kids with cancer?be kids! Check out our impact on the community firsthand- here is a thank you note from a parent of a child in treatment: ?We had an amazing time at Incredible Pizza today. Thank You!!!! I don?t think words could ever describe how big of a blessing you guys are to our family and so many others!?

How we would use a new Toyota:

Friends provides many programs ALL over the St. Louis area on a small staff, so we utilize many volunteers for errands and to implement our programs. We need a safe, clean vehicle for them to use that can hold the eclectic mix of items that we provide: toys, games, tickets and all kinds of great things for the kids at the treatment centers every day. We also hold events just for the kids and families. In addition to the programs, we have to run multiple special event fundraisers each year. Having a roomy vehicle would help us be more efficient and save on any costs related to hauling signs, shirts, auction items, banners, food, drinks and everything in between that comes up during events.

About us:

The mission of Operation Food Search is to provide food and other basic necessities to individuals in need to relieve the burden of hunger and its consequences. Founded in 1981, Operation Food Search is the largest distributor of free food in the Saint Louis bi-state (MO/IL) region. We are a ?big roots? organization serving the needs of 130,000 Saint Louisians, half of whom are children, through our network of 250 community partner agencies. Sadly, 1 in 4 children risk going hungry on daily basis. Operation Backpack and our Nutrition Education programs focus efforts on low-income children specifically, as these vulnerable kids face the greatest risk of starvation and malnutrition.

?

How we would use a new Toyota:

Our dietitians and their volunteers currently travel within a 75 mile radius around the bi-state region with food and cooking supplies to provide nutrition information to more than 4,000 low-income families. Our Cooking Matters team needs reliable, secure transportation, with ample space for their gear and staff, to continue their hands-on outreach program in our community. The families and individuals we reach rely on our team to learn how to keep their children healthy on a tight budget. Our current vehicle has nearly 190,000 miles on it and is falling apart. A new vehicle would be an asset to not only Operation Food Search, but to strengthening our community as a whole.

Congratulations to these organizations on winning a new vehicle.

- Steve Patterson

Is Your Small Business Mobile Enough to Beat the Competition?

Guest post by Dave Thomas

Dave Thomas is an expert writer on items like direct mail companies, and is based in San Diego, California. He writes extensively for an online resource that provides expert advice on purchasing and outsourcing decisions for small business owners and entrepreneurs at Resource Nation.

Why I ask you, why?

Why are we, Level343, sharing information about mobile payments and your business? Buried in analytics, trends and so on as we are, we?ve seen a definite trend of visitors using mobile phones on our clients? sites. ?

The plain and simple truth is that mobile usage ? in all forms ? is growing; that growth includes the expectation of being able to make mobile payments. Take, for example, Google Wallet, which will use Citi? PayPass? MasterCards and Google?s Prepaid Card at launch, but is planned to have more partners.

For many online business owners, the site is simply a virtual extension of the physical store. Making it more convenient for customers ? and doing so before the competition ? can be extremely advantageous. Having said all that, read on, as our guest poster, Dave Thomas, goes more in depth about mobile payments. ?

From all indications, the mobile world we live in is only going to get more advanced, becoming a bigger part of our everyday lives.

As a small business, are you prepared to handle the demands of your customers or let them drift away to a competitor?

According to a recent report from KPMG International, 83 percent of some 1,000 executives in a variety of fields (tech to retail) believe mobile payments will be the mainstream prior the end of 2014. According to those surveyed, 46 percent believe paying via phone will be the norm by 2013.

As KPMG International sees it, ever-increasing smartphone growth and a number of opportunities will increase mobile payments at a much faster rate than respondents initially thought, especially given the competition. Companies like Isus, Google, Pay Pal and Square are among those looking to take their piece of the mobile payment pie, a sign of just how important this market is.

For small businesses, mobile payments can, not only offer the consumer an easier ability to pay, but can open up the doors for you, the business owner. They also provide a faster and more stream lined payment process. The day may not be as far away as some may have thought where credit cards and wallets take a back seat to one?s phone in order to pay for a purchase.

As a small business owner, are you prepared for when this day comes?

The Future of Mobile

According to many experts who follow the world of mobile payment technology, it would behoove small business owners to be in the forefront and not at the back of the line in accepting this technology.

In the event your company is not up to speed on the mobile payment world, now would certainly be the time to jump in and get your feet wet.

Among the advantages to having mobile payments in place are:

  • Payment processing is quicker ? Given that you?re no longer required to stand idly by waiting for a receipt, you can move your customers in and out more quickly;
  • You snooze you lose ? For those small businesses not offering mobile payments, there is a greater chance of losing customers to those businesses that do. Remember how things were before your business was able to accept credit cards? There is a good chance you lost customers who wanted to pay with plastic instead of cash. The same will hold true with those wanting to use their phone instead of plastic;
  • Fraud is less likely ? Although nothing is 100 percent foolproof, not having customers use credit cards as much lessens the chances of fraud. We all know that credit cards can be lost or stolen, while the chance of someone having their phone stolen is smaller.

If you?re not dialed in to mobile payments just yet, here are several means to go about it:

First, determine what type of implementation you want ? among the choices would be a smartphone app, using the smartphone to read credit cards or letting customers use smartphones via near field communication (NFC).

The next step involves selecting a vendor, but be sure to research each and every one of them to look how the contracts are worded regarding fees etc.

Lastly, make sure security for both you and the customer is a high priority. You will want a secured wireless network with a card swiper that is encrypted.

While not everyone will immediately catch on to the world of mobile payments, your business can leave its footprint in the mobile world and reap the benefits of more customers in the process.

AP sources: US call for Assad departure imminent (AP)

WASHINGTON ? U.S. officials say the Obama administration is ready to make an explicit call for Syrian President Bashar Assad to leave power and has notified Arab and European allies that an announcement is imminent.

The timing is still in flux but preparations are in place for the White House to issue a statement Thursday demanding that Assad step down, the officials said. This would be accompanied by an announcement of new sanctions on the Assad regime and followed by an on-camera appearance by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to reinforce the U.S. position, the officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Although the officials acknowledged the move is not likely to have any immediate impact on the Syrian regime's behavior, they said it would send a powerful signal that Assad is no longer welcome in the international community. And they noted that the additional sanctions would further boost pressure on Assad and his inner circle.

President Barack Obama, Clinton and top national security aides have previously said that Assad has "lost his legitimacy" as a leader and that Syria would be "better off" without him. But they had not specifically demanded that he step down.

Thursday's expected new formulation of policy will make it clear that Assad can no longer be a credible reformist and has to leave, the officials said.

The administration had planned to make the announcement last week but postponed it largely at the request of Syria's neighbor Turkey, which asked for more time to try to convince Assad to reform, and because Clinton and other officials argued it was important to build a global consensus that Assad must go. Clinton on Tuesday publicly questioned the effectiveness of the United States acting alone.

"It is not going to be any news if the United States says Assad needs to go," she said. "OK, fine, what's next? If other people say it, if Turkey says it, if (Saudi) King Abdullah says it, there is no way the Assad regime can ignore it."

Since then, however, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has compared Assad to Libya's Moammar Gadhafi for refusing to heed calls to change. Turkey has joined calls for Gadhafi to leave power and Erdogan said Wednesday he had personally spoken to Assad and sent his foreign minister to Damascus, but "despite all of this, they are continuing to strike civilians."

In addition, Tunisia on Wednesday recalled its ambassador from Syria, following the lead of several other Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, that the U.S. has been lobbying to show displeasure with Assad.

And, on Thursday, U.S. officials say the U.N. human rights chief is expected to call on the U.N. Security Council to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court for investigation of alleged atrocities against protesters during the five-month uprising. Syria insists it is rooting out terrorists but rights groups accuse Syrian troops of killing more than 1,800 civilians since mid-March.

Such steps appear to match the administration's stated strategy of coordination.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Thursday that Washington was "working on a careful set of actions and statements ... and working with our partners on the same."

"Political steps, economic steps are strongest when they are together," she told reporters. "Words and sanctions should go together, and ideally, they should go in concert with others."
