Sony issues custom firmware ultimatum

Custom firmware for the PS3 has been around for two years but as of last week, it can get full access to the PSN.

Sony is cracking down on the use of custom firmware on hacked Playstation 3s to access the Playstation Network.

As a result of a decryption key leak last month, players using a Playstation 3 with custom firmware installed are able to play online alongside regular users. Sony is warning that access to its network could be permanently removed from anyone that is using firmware that is not its standard issued version.

'Consumers running unauthorized or pirated software may have their access to the Playstation Network and access to Sony Entertainment Network services through Playstation 3 system terminated permanently,' said a Sony spokesperson. ' To avoid permanent termination, consumers must immediately cease using and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their Playstation 3 systems.'

The use of custom firmware patches the system to allow for copied software to run directly from the console's hard drive. Although various versions of custom firmware have been available for approximately two years on the machine, it was only last month that the PSN access codes, the PS3 lv0 bootloader keys, were leaked, allowing hacked consoles full access online.

Sony has not always been so restrictive as to what can and can not be installed onto its consoles. At its launch in 2006, the Playstation 3 supported Linux, effectively making the console a cheap supercomputer, but this was dropped in 2010. This discontinued Linux support is thought to have converted many legitimate users into hackers and contributed towards further development of custom firmware.

We admit to being a little mystified at the rise of the "phablet," a portable device that occupies the awkward middle ground between tablet and smartphone.

Still, the things are apparently selling pretty well ? earlier this year, Samsung announced it had sold 3 million Galaxy Note II phablets in just over a month. It was an indicator, TechCrunch argued at the time,?of "serious momentum for enormo-phones."?

The latest super-sized smart phone to hit the market is the HTC Droid DNA, a slim gadget equipped with a?5-inch HD display. By comparison, the screen on the iPhone 5 measures 4-inches corner to corner ? and that was a size upgrade from the 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4S. So yes, the Droid DNA has a lot of screen real estate. It's also got a record-setting pixel density of 440 pixels-per-inch.?

"That is the highest-pixel density on any mobile screen to ever hit the States," writes Brent Rose of Gizmodo, "by a gigantic margin (HTC announced the J Butterfly last month in Japan which has the same screen). To put that in perspective, the iPhone 5 has 326 PPI, or 114 fewer pixels?per inch?than the Droid DNA. It's also better than any tablet, computer, or TV on the market."

Other niceties: The?Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, an 8-megapixel camera, a 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, and 2 gigabytes of RAM. The Droid DNA will be powered by Verizon Wireless, and available on Nov. 21. The price is $199 with a two-year voice and data contract. And already, the DNA is enjoying some seriously glowing notices ("this thing is nuts," notes Rose of Gizmodo).?

"On back, the phone?s soft-touch surface cut from premium polycarbonate reminds me more of the HTC One X and One X+?s design language though," writes CNET's Brian Bennet, in a hands-on preview posted today. "You?ll need that soft-touch coating too since its rubber feel provides a sure grip. The device?s large, yet thin. Its 0.16-inch profile make it thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S III."?

More when we know it, including a more comprehensive look at reviews.?

FTC chief: Kids' Internet privacy rules done by year's end

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Regulators will likely finish a long-awaited update to rules protecting children's online privacy by the end of the year, the head of the Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday.

The original rules were developed when most computers were large beige boxes sitting under office desks instead of smartphones slung into backpacks and permeating most aspects of daily life.

FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz said the agency was moving forward on two issues: self-regulatory "do not track" guidance, and regulations to update the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA.

The law requires that website and online service operators obtain verifiable consent from parents before collecting information about children.

Leibowitz, who is thought keen to leave the agency within months, said he was more confident of finishing an update of COPPA's rules, which were written following the 1998 legislation.

Under revised rules, the FTC would make websites, mobile apps and data brokers all responsible for getting parental consent before collecting data about children aged 12 and younger. Currently it is unclear who has the responsibility.

Data brokers buy and sell consumer data.

Speaking at the Wall Street Journal's annual CEO Conference in Washington, Leibowitz said the process would most likely be done by the end of the year.

"We are looking at all the comments that came in and weighing how to tweak the regulation," he said.

Leibowitz was slightly less optimistic about the fate of "do not track," an effort to allow Internet users to tell companies they did not want to be tracked online.

Some large technology companies, like Microsoft and Google, have agreed to let consumers opt out of being tracked, but advertisers have pushed back hard.

"We're still making forward progress," Leibowitz said when asked if the efforts would be done by the end of the year. "We continue to be optimistic. It's not a certainty though."

Mislabelled LEGO Lord of the Rings discs for Xbox 360 recalled by Warner Bros

Warner Bros has announced a limited recall of the copies of Xbox 360 version of LEGO Lord of the Rings because of mislabelled ?Demo? discs.

Upon opening the cover of the game released on November 13, some Xbox 360 users found themselves staring at a demo disc of LEGO Lord of the Rings instead of the full retail version.

The victims also included the editor of Game Informer and thus the news of the error made by Warner Bros spread like a wild-fire in a dry forest.

Upon getting informed about the issue faced by some of the consumers who had purchased the Xbox 360 version of the game, the company immediately investigated the issue.

In a statement released shortly afterwards, Warner Bros confirmed that there were indeed a problem with labelling on some of the discs for the Xbox 360.

However, it assured gamers that irrespective of what the label stated, the disc contained the full content of the game and will not face any problems while playing LEGO Lord of the Rings whatsoever.

Warner Bros also conceded that it is recalling copies of the Xbox 360 version of the game from a few retailers, which include Wal-Mart, Toys ?R? Us and Target with the intention of replacing them with remanufactured discs.

"The discs in question are incorrectly labeled as demo discs, but those discs do contain the full game content and are fully functional," reads a line from the statement. "This error does not affect any other formats of the game. We are in the process of remanufacturing the discs and will get them to the stores as soon as possible. Consumers who purchased a copy of the Xbox 360 version of the game with the disc labelling error can contact customer support via email at support@wbgames.com or phone at 410-568-3680 for a replacement disc."

It is hard to predict whether the issues with the labelling of discs will take its toll on the overall performance of the game in terms of sales. One thing that can be said with certainty though is that the quick response of Warner Bros to the issue is a great move as the holiday season is just around the corner.

Still no power for 84,000 in New York, New Jersey

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Long Island Power Authority expects to restore service on Tuesday to most of its New York customers able to receive electricity, but more than 84,000 homes and businesses in New York and New Jersey will stay dark due to flood damage from Hurricane Sandy.

LIPA, a New York State-owned power company, said it should hook up almost all of the remaining 15,000 homes and businesses that still lack service on Tuesday morning, more than two weeks after Sandy battered the region.

But that number excludes customers within the flooded areas of Long Island that have yet to be surveyed for damage or may need repairs and certification by an electrician before the company can restore service, LIPA said.

On Monday night, LIPA said about 38,000 homes and businesses were located within the flooded areas - 26,000 on the Rockaway Peninsula in New York City, 11,000 in Nassau County and 300 in Suffolk County.

Other New York and New Jersey utilities had restored power by the weekend to most customers able to take service.

However, thousands of customers remained without power due to flood damage - especially from seawater - which may have damaged electrical panels, wires, outlets and appliances, making it unsafe to restore electricity.

In New York City, Consolidated Edison Inc said on Monday it still had about 16,300 customers in flood-ravaged areas of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island who could not regain electric service until they fixed their internal equipment.

In New Jersey, FirstEnergy Corp's Jersey Central Power and Light utility has said about 30,000 customers on the barrier islands and shoreline communities could not have power restored due to infrastructure damage in that area.

LIPA HIT HARDEST

Sandy knocked out power to about 8.5 million customers in 21 states after hitting New Jersey on October 29.

More than 1 million of LIPA's 1.1 million customers lost power due to Sandy, while a nor'easter storm last week knocked out 123,000 more customers - thousands of whom had had power restored after Sandy.

Combined, Sandy and the nor'easter knocked out more homes and businesses on Long Island than LIPA has customers.

Despite the hard hit, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has attacked all of the affected New York power companies - especially LIPA - for the slow pace of restoration.

Fitch Ratings, a credit rating firm, on Monday revised its outlook on LIPA's $5.9 billion of outstanding electric system revenue bonds to negative.

Fitch said the effects of Sandy would challenge LIPA's already tight financial flexibility and frustrate the authority's efforts to achieve improved financial performance.

The cost of the Sandy restoration was uncertain but would likely exceed the $170 million LIPA spent to restore service after Hurricane Irene in August 2011, Fitch said.

LIPA expects to recover about 75 percent of its Sandy-related restoration costs from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, Fitch said.

Ratepayers usually cover unreimbursed storm costs. However, Fitch said LIPA's willingness to make customers pay more may be limited "given the intense political pressure surrounding LIPA's storm response and the authority's historic objective to moderate already high electric rates".

Debt management options for debtors ? It's never too late to turn ...

Helpless flailing, intense panic and stress are something like a monthly ritual that people who are drowning in debt face. The Federal Reserve is continuously announcing the soaring debt level of the Americans and yet the consumers are not being able to take any worthy decision in order to rein in their finances. Are you someone who has racked up a mammoth amount on your multiple credit cards? Have you been misusing your credit cards to a large extent? If answered yes, you should immediately take some rock solid steps to relieve yourself of the shackles of debt as debt, left unattended, will lead to a mess in the long run. Someone who is trying his best to get the answer to the question how to get rid of debt, might sometimes need the assistance of a professional who can help him with the entire process of getting out of debt. Check out some debt management options that the financially hapless debtors can take resort to.

Debt management plan: When people feel overwhelmed with credit card debt, they can sign up with a debt management plan through a credit counseling agency. This is a structured payment workout proposal that is agreed by all the creditors with the assistance of an expert credit counselor. You have to make a single monthly payment to the credit counselor and your payments will be disbursed off to your creditors. All the accounts that will be included in the DMP should be closed and therefore if you?re someone who doesn?t want to part with your credit cards, then this might not be the best option for you. Signing up with a debt management program won?t hurt your credit score in the least way and therefore you can easily choose this to get out of debt.

Debt settlement program: Another way to alleviate the stress of overwhelming credit card debt is by settling your debts through a debt settlement program. Choosing to pay less than what you owe is what debt settlement entails and if you don?t have enough funds through which you can repay the total debt amount on your own, you can indeed choose this debt settlement option. As you?ll not repay the entire amount that you owe, this will hurt your credit score and the scoring impact might even be similar to serious and delinquent accounts. So, when you?re on the brink of filing bankruptcy, take a look back and check if you can choose to settle your debts.

Debt consolidation program: Debt management is also possible when you can enroll yourself in a debt consolidation program. The debt consolidation companies offer a debt consolidation program through which you can get out of debt by making periodic payments. The consultant will negotiate with your creditors on your behalf and try to lower the interest rates so as to facilitate the entire debt repayment schedule. If you can repay the total debt amount in easy and affordable monthly payments, you can be sure about getting out of debt within a year or two. Therefore, when you?re facing a heap of unpaid credit card bills, you might get out of debt by taking resort to the above mentioned options. Choose the one that suits your needs and ability so that you can easily be able to bear the new payments throughout the term of the program.

If you?re finding it a struggle to deal with your debts and maintain your repayments, and are worried about your financial situation, contact one of our Specialist Debt Advisors at Ask Debt Solutions, and see how we can help alleviate the pressure.
