How Did the Easter Island Settlers Destroy Themselves? [Video]

Did early Polynesians ruin their lush island by overlogging to move giant statues? A method that "walks" the statues casts doubt?and supports Polynesian mythology. A NOVA video

easter island statues called moai Image: Ian Sewell/Wikimedia Commons

Easter Island was once home to lush palm forests. Over time, however, the humans who settled there depleted the island?s resources, leading to wars among clans that doomed the population.

Their legacy, the giant stone sculptures called moai, have drawn intense interest and fascination ever since Europeans discovered them in 1722. One theory posits that the early Polynesians who settled on the island, also known as Rapa Nui, cut down trees for logs to roll the statues from their quarries to their overlook positions. Competition among clans led to ever bigger moai and, ultimately, to the destruction of the forest.

Some researchers doubt that such logging could have devastated the island, especially if the statues ?walked? into position, as Polynesian mythology holds. Indeed, scientists published a paper last month showing just how a moai could have been walked with a series of ropes pulled by dedicated volunteers.

Their demonstration supports other theories for the disappearance of the Easter Islanders, such as the hunting to extinction of sea birds, whose droppings nourished the forest. This and other explanations are summed up in this sneak-peek NOVA clip. The full program premieres on Wednesday, November 7 at 9 P.M. Eastern on PBS.

The center will focus on research and development of non-irrigated green roofs that are suitable for Middle Eastern climates

The University of Haifa, Israel, has dedicated Israel's first research center for Green Roofs Ecology, which will focus on research and development of non-irrigated green roofs; improving biological diversity with green roofs; and developing ecological and evolutionary theories.

The center has been established thanks to a generous gift from a British expert in the field, and was facilitated by VP for External Relations and Resource Development Amos Gaver.

Over recent years, awareness of the "green roofs" gardening method atop building roofs has increased. It is intended to enhance a building's energy efficiency while minimizing environmental damage. The rooftop vegetation creates better insulation for the building, which lowers air conditioning and/or heating consumption; improves photosynthesis in the city; and of course serves as an urban living space for various animals.

Until now, Israel has not had a research center for green roofs and research from other countries has not necessarily been applicable for the unique climate and flora of the Middle East. The new center, headed by Prof. Leon Blaustein of the University's Department of Evolutionary and Environmental Biology, will be examining the field in the Israeli context: Will it be possible to assemble green roofs in the Israeli climate without artificial irrigation? Will Israeli flora be reliable to serve for green roofs; And do green roofs increase the biological diversity of insets and plants? Research at the center will also examine the utilization of greywater irrigation for the roofs; whether a building's height affects insect attraction to a green roof; whether drainage from green roofs might cause more environmental damage than good; and more.

One of the University of Haifa's roofs has already been transformed into a green research laboratory with 48 different plant beds. Its first research project is focusing on the preferred types of plants and how the different plants attract insects and birds. The center's team has already begun seeking out additional roofs around the campus that would be suitable for use as green roofs, and along with maintenance staff promises to turn the campus into a much greener place.

The center's festive dedication ceremony was attended by the benefactors and University President Amos Shapira.

DNA sequencing of infants and children with anatomical defects of unknown causes

ScienceDaily (Nov. 6, 2012) ? A presentation at the American Society of Human Genetics 2012 meeting updated genetics experts about a one-year-old research initiative that brought together researchers, clinicians and policy experts to tackle the challenges of incorporating new genomic technologies into clinical care of newborns, infants and children with anatomical defects whose causes are unknown.

Among the challenges is interpreting how variations in patients' DNA cause or contribute to their medical problems, said Duke University Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Erica E. Davis, Ph.D., who presented the update and is based in the Center for Human Disease Modeling in the university's medical center.

In 2011, the center founded the Duke Task Force for Neonatal Genomics to act as a nucleus for a group of physicians and scientists with the diverse skills sets needed to bridge genetics, genomics, cell biology, ethics and clinical investigation and to offer a "360 degree" view of challenging clinical pediatric cases, Dr. Davis said.

"Strikingly, preliminary analysis of the task force's first year of work has suggested definitive or strong candidate diagnoses in some 90% of the recruited cases," she noted.

During its first year, the task force screened over 150 newborns, infants and children, enrolled 20 patients and developed the capacity to enroll about 100 patients each year.

"Our patients come from the Duke fetal diagnostic center, the Duke intensive care nursery and various pediatric specialty clinics," she said.

In one child with severe epilepsy, the task force used sequencing of the protein-coding regions of the genome (about 2% of the entire human genome) to identify a broken gene that impairs the ability of sodium to move in and out of cells.

"We determined that the child's condition was caused by a new mutation in a gene named SCN2A," Dr. Davis said.

This approach was also used to help diagnose genetic disorders in babies with a variety of conditions including congenital muscle weakness, fluid in the brain and kidney cysts.

"The task force's goal is to create a model of how and when genetic sequencing should be a first-tier diagnostic tool to inform and guide clinical management and treatment of young children with unexplained congenital defects," she said.

"By sequencing the DNA of these children early in life, clinicians can make use of personalized genomic information that, in combination with all of the other tools doctors have at their disposal, can inform patient management and potentially improve outcomes.

"We have a large interdisciplinary team that includes researchers, clinicians and policy scholars. What binds us together are the shared goals of using new genetic technologies to improve the health of these patients and sharing as much information as we can with their families," Dr. Davis added.

Dr. Davis described the task force's interdisciplinary approach; how it recruits patients and produces and analyzes data; and how it keeps families and their physicians informed before, during and after DNA sequencing.

The latter, she said, includes "our evolving and inclusive approach to returning primary and secondary genomic findings to clinicians and family members."

Once DNA variants or mutations suspected to cause disease are identified by sequencing patients' DNA, the task force then attempts to determine what those variants actually do by measuring their effects in animal models, most notably zebra fish.

"We can't be completely certain that we have found 'the gene or genes' until we understand what a variant does in a living cell," she said.

The task force focuses on keeping participating families informed and engaged because, "by the time they enroll in our study, our patients and their parents have usually been on a long 'diagnostic odyssey' and have come up empty," Dr. Davis said.

"We want to do whatever we can to change that. We don't want to be one more source of frustration and disappointment to them. We can't offer any guarantees, but we want them to think of us as partners. We are fully invested in trying to find answers and make their lives and their children's lives better if we can," she added.

BUDDY CHECK 6: Menopause treatment linked to breast cancer ...

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) ? Most women are familiar with the most common symptom of menopause: hot flashes. But there are others like night sweats, mood swings, and weight gain.

A study 10 years ago, raised red flags about the most common treatment for those symptoms and its link to breast cancer.

In the past, women took hormone replacement therapy or HRT, a combination of the hormones estrogen and progesterone, to ease the symptoms.

But a study in 2002 raised questions about HRT and an increased risk for breast cancer. Seventy percent of breast cancers are fed by estrogen.

Thousands of women were told to stop taking HRT.?

Where do things stand a decade later?

Dr. ?Rashmi Vaidya with the Virginia Breast Center, says when it comes to HRT women should remember less is more. She says most doctors now prescribe an estrogen only pill

?So the recommendation? is if you need to take HRT, it should be a low dose estrogen for the shortest possible time,? says Dr. Vaidya.

She says that?s no more than two years which is the time when women experience the worst symptoms.

There are also non-hormonal options for easing menopausal symptoms. Dr. Vaidya says that includes anti-depressants, anti-seizure medication, and certain blood pressure medications. ?

Watch Stephanie?s full interview with?Dr. Vaidya in the video players on this page.?

Smartphone saturation ? feature phones fight back

What OS does your most recently-purchased tablet have? graph of japanese statisticsjapan.internet.com recently reported on goo Research?s sixth regular survey into mobile devices, which shows for the first time a reversal in smartphone growth.

Demographics

Between the 22nd and 25th of October 2012 1,077 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.0% of the sample were male, 16.3% in their teens, 17.9% in their twenties, 21.4% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, and 27.9% aged fifty or older.

I heard from my wife that (sorry for the inaccuracy, but it?s the best I can do!) that a TV show recently said that according to a survey, about 40% of women (in their thirties or all ages, she wasn?t quite clear) who had smartphones either kept their feature phones, wanted to get an extra feature phone, or wanted to ditch their smartphones. This survey is perhaps the first indication of this trend that What Japan Thinks has picked up. I?ll be keen to see how the next survey looks, especially that although docomo?s summer 2012 line-up did not include any feature phones, their winter 2012-2013 line-up includes four bog-standard last-gen iMode clamshells from four different Japanese manufacturers.

Research results

First, people were asked what mobile devices they had. Feature phones were top at 60.9%, notebooks and netbooks at 52.2%, smartphones at 39.1%, portable games machines at 32.5%, portable music players at 31.3%, and so on. The interesting figures to look at here are the trends in feature phone versus smartphone.

Q1: Do you have either of these devices?

? Feature phone Smartphone
1st survey, July 2011
N=1,079
77.9% 18.3%
2nd survey, October 2011

Furthermore, 97 people, 9.0%, said they had a tablet device.

Q2: What OS do your tablets have? (Sample size=97, multiple answer)

It was presented as a pie chart in the original text, but note it is a multiple-choice answer.
