Food Network star Sandra Lee has a simple plea about superstorm Sandy recovery efforts ? don't get complacent.

Though government efforts to help those caught in the path of last week's epic storm have been tremendous, as have contributions by corporations and individual donors, Lee fears a fallout from all the goodwill and good deeds ? people outside the worst-hit areas might assume the work is finished.

"Don't think that everybody else is doing the work or it's getting done," Lee ? who also happens to be New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's live-in girlfriend ? said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "Don't think 'My contribution will be so meaningless and small that it won't matter.' That is not the case."

The storm battered several Northeastern states, but hit New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area particularly hard. Lee has been working the phones to arrange corporate donations for New York's food banks and other charities, including five truckloads of food and emergency supplies from Kmart and Sears.

"We've been reaching out to everyone. It's amazing when CEOs of huge corporations just get on the phone and just get it done," she said. But there also have been disappointments. "There's some that you're just stunned, stunned, stunned, stunned that they don't respond. Where is the leadership at these companies?"

Mostly, however, she has been impressed by how people have pulled together.

"We're all going to be hit by a disaster and a storm and something in our area. It's just a matter of time. You saw it in New Orleans. You're seeing it here," Lee said. "We all have to help one another when that happens. And that is one of the things you're seeing. Right now it's our turn and we're the ones in need. Next time, it will be our turn to help."

Microsoft reveals how much of Surface RT's disc space is actually yours

If you've wondered how much space Windows RT, Office and Microsoft's bundled apps occupy on your shiny new Surface RT, worry no longer. Microsoft has revealed that once you've accounted for binary conversion, recovery provision and the software itself, the 32GB device will have 16GB of free space, while 64GB units will get 46GB of room to store your media. Naturally, you can use microSD cards (or USB Drives) to add to that space, and if you'd like to know how to get the device to treat it as if it's all coming from a single library, check out our tutorial.

Host a 'cook ahead' party with friends

There are big advantages to cooking and freezing meals in advance, but the process can take up a major chunk of your weekend. Why not turn it into a party?

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / November 3, 2012

Cooking a recipe in bulk with friends is a great way to reduce your weekly meal load, save money, and catch up, Hamm says.

About three months ago, I included an entry in this series describing the advantages of?cooking and freezing complete meals in advance. Typically, we?d make several copies of the exact same meal, cook one for supper that night, and put the rest in the freezer.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

There are several advantages to doing this.?We can buy all the ingredients in bulk, saving us money on the overall cost of the food and lowering the cost per meal prepared.?We were able to immediately use items from our garden?so that our bumper crop of tomatoes didn?t go to waste.?We were able to make the meals as healthy (or as unhealthy) as we wanted?since we had total control over the ingredients.

Of course, there were a few drawbacks, too. We had to have freezer space for all of these items, and we did have to devote a very large chunk of a day to this.

Thankfully, there?s one wonderful way to accentuate the positives and minimize the negatives when it comes to cooking ahead: make it into a social event.

Making it social allows you to take even more advantage of bulk buying.?If you do this with four friends instead of just by yourself, you can buy things in bulk that might not have even made sense alone. Spices might become a sensible bulk buy, for example. You also might be able to buy in extreme bulk at warehouse clubs on things like large bags of rice.

Making it social allows you to split up the work.?If you?re making lasagna, for example, you could have one person cooking noodles, one person preparing filling, and two people assembling the dishes. This allows you to focus on just one thing instead of rushing from task to task. You?re much less likely to make a food preparation error this way.

Making it social makes it a lot more fun.?Instead of cooking alone all day, you?re making all of this food with your friends. Instead of drudgery, it can be a?lot?of fun.

Here are a few tips that will make it a real success.

Do some advance work.?Take a good recipe and make sure everyone in the group is good with it. Then expand the ingredients to the necessary amounts. Also, split up the recipe into tasks for everyone so that they?re clear on what exactly they should be doing. A bit of prep work makes the whole day flow much better.

Split up the buying, too.?Have each person come with an equal portion of the ingredients needed (mailing everyone a list of what they need to bring is part of the prep work). Another option is to simply go shopping for the stuff as a group before you begin preparation and then split the ticket up equally.

Make sure the host has a lot of freezer space.?That way, you can store the meals as they?re prepped. I find it?s good to host one of these when your deep freezer is very close to empty.

Prepare multiple dishes.?Take advantage of the day and make two or three different dishes for everyone to take home a few batches of. It takes more prep work, but it allows everyone to have more variety in their freezer.

Add to the pleasure.?Play some low volume music throughout. Enjoy one of the meals together at the end of the day, and perhaps bring out a bottle of wine that will go well with it. They?re your friends ? make it fun.

The end result of such a party is a nice day with friends and/or family and a bunch of prepared meals in your freezer that have been assembled at a very low cost. That?s a pretty good day in my eyes.

The GOP war on voting: Ohio Secretary of State in contempt of court order

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Now this guy definitely should do jail time for voter suppression -- Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted is in comtempt of a court order issued a week ago. The court should find him in contempt on Monday and order him to cool his heels in jail for a few days. Last-Minute Ohio Directive Could Trash Legal Votes And Swing The Election:

A last-minute directive issued by Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted (R) could invalidate legal provisional ballots. Ohio is widely viewed as the most critical state for both presidential campaigns and ? with some polls showing a close race ? the 11th-hour move could swing the entire election.

The directive, issued Friday, lays out the requirements for submitting a provisional ballot. The directive includes a form which puts the burden on the voter to correctly record the form of ID provided to election officials. Husted also instructed election officials that if the form is not filled out correctly by a voter, the ballot should not be counted.

According to a lawsuit filed by voting rights advocates, this is ?contrary to a court decision on provisional ballots a week ago and contrary to statements made by attorneys for Husted at an Oct. 24 court hearing.?

Indeed, it also appears directly contrary to Ohio law. From the lawsuit:

Ohio Rev. Code ? 3505.181(B)(6) provides that, once a voter casting a provisional ballot proffers identification, ?the appropriate local election official shall record the type of identification provided, the social security number information, the fact that the affirmation was executed, or the fact that the individual declined to execute such an affirmation and include that information with the transmission of the ballot . . . .? (Emphasis added.)

The law ?ensures that any questions regarding a voter?s identification are resolved on the spot or, consistent with due process, the voter is informed that he or she needs to provide additional information to the board of elections. This protects the integrity of the voting process, and provides a reasonable opportunity to resolve deficiencies.?

[This lawsuit arises out of Ohio's "right church, wrong pew" rule. Several precincts vote at the same polling location. Errors resulting in provisional ballots being issued are largely due to inexperienced or poorly trained poll workers not directing voters to the right precinct table at the polling location. The burden rests on the state, not the voter, to get it right.]

The last-minute directive changes this and switches the burden to the voter, greatly increasing the chances that legal provisional ballots will be discarded.

The court gave Husted until Monday to respond to the lawsuit and indicated it will resolve the dispute before provisional ballots are counted on November 17.

This evil bastard is the GOP's poster boy for voter suppression this year.

UPDATE: The Associated Press reported that 31 percent of the 2.1 million provisional ballots cast nationwide in 2008 were not counted, and called provisional ballots the ?hanging chads of 2012."

Saudi confirms third case of newly discovered SARS-like virus

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - A Saudi citizen in the capital Riyadh is the world's third confirmed case of a newly discovered SARS-related virus but he has now recovered from his illness, the official Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.

The potentially deadly novel coronavirus is from the same family as SARS but had only been confirmed in two previous cases: a 60-year-old Saudi man who died earlier this year, and a man from Qatar who was treated in a London hospital.

Saudi authorities conducted tests on the new case in the Health Ministry and then sent abroad a sample which tested positive, the agency said, citing a statement from the ministry.

"The patient received the appropriate treatment and has recovered," the agency quoted the ministry as stating, adding that the man had not left Riyadh.

The World Health Organisation put out a global alert in September on the virus, but later added that it did not appear to spread easily from person to person.

Coronaviruses also include strains that cause the common cold as well as SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which emerged in China in 2002 and killed around a tenth of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide.

Saudi Arabia had taken precautions to prevent the disease spreading among Muslim pilgrims during the annual Haj pilgrimage which took place at the end of October.

Millions of Muslims from 160 countries flock to Mecca and Medina during the Haj season to perform the annual religious ritual and Saudi Arabia had said at the time it was taking preventative measures to stop the virus from spreading.

Are you looking for a good return on your money? A better return than you can get from a market investment banking or money? Why not invest in commercial real estate. Although the residential real estate market has bottomed out practically in most parts of the United States, the commercial real estate market is thriving. If you have always wanted to invest in the real estate market, but have doubts about the current residential market, invest in commercial real estate. When you invest in commercial real estate, you need to understand that there is a huge difference between commercial and residential real estate. Not only is the market different, but so are the laws. Due diligence in commercial real estate is different than that in the residential market. You still want to make sure you have an inspection of the property prior to settlement, as well as a study of the property. You also need to ensure that you get the easements included in the sale if needed. Most people think of easements as those that burden the property, such as services and sewerage. With commercial property, there are often easements for the benefit of the property. Anyway, to get to a property people have to drive their vehicles over other property owned by other people. In this case, the person acquiring the commercial real estate will want to ensure that they receive the necessary easements for parking or entry and exit. These may be included in the deed or in an easement agreement. The only way to see if you need easements is to get a survey of your property depicting not only the property, but the easements relating to property. The title insurance commitment should also reflect a legal description of the easements. The title company must search not only the commercial real estate property you are buying, but also any other property in which you are receiving an easement. The reason for having this property recorded includes the following points:1. You need to know that the person who signs the easement agreement or deed is legally entitled to transfer the interest in the property;MedlinePlus 2. You need to know that there is no burden on the easement property that prevents you from using it;MedlinePlus 3. You need to know that the easement property taxes are current. It would be unfortunate to purchase commercial real estate depends on easements and discover that the property is in a tax sale. A person who purchases the property could insist to pay money to use their property, they can even erect a fence to prevent the use of the land. When you invest in commercial real estate, make sure that you have an attorney who is well versed when it comes to commercial real estate, not just residential real estate. Commercial real estate is a completely different from residential real estate and your attorney should be aware of this aspect of the real estate industry.
