CLEVELAND (AP) ? Unemployment rates fell last month in nearly all of the battleground states that will determine the presidential winner, giving President Barack Obama fresh fodder to argue that voters should stick with him in an election focused squarely on the economy.

The declines, however, were modest. It's unknown whether they will do much to sway undecided voters who are considering whether to back Republican Mitt Romney or give the Democratic president four more years.

The statewide data released by the Labor Department on Friday provide one of the last comprehensive looks at the health of the U.S. economy ahead of Election Day, now a little more than two weeks away. Voters will get one more update on the national unemployment rate just days before the election. But the state reports matter greatly to the Obama and Romney campaigns, which believe the public's impressions of the economy are shaped mostly by local conditions rather than national ones.

In Ohio, perhaps the most crucial battleground state for both Obama and Romney, the unemployment rate ticked down last month to 7 percent from 7.2 percent, below the national average of 7.8 percent.

"I knew a lot of people who were laid off and now they're working," said firefighter Matt Sparling, an Obama supporter from Parma Heights, Ohio. "So something good is happening here."

Obama's team is banking on the president getting credit for improvements in Ohio's economy, particularly for the bailout of the auto industry, which has deep roots in the Midwestern swing state. But Romney has opportunities to run on the economy in Ohio, too. The state actually lost nearly 13,000 jobs in September and the drop in the unemployment rate was probably due in part to people dropping out of the job market.

The president didn't mention the state jobless numbers during a campaign stop Friday in Virginia, one of two battleground states where the rate didn't drop. It held steady at the relatively low level of 5.9 percent.

Spirited on other topics, Obama quipped in a raucous rally at George Mason University that a case of "Romnesia" was preventing his opponent from remembering his own stances on health care, energy and a slate of policies.

"He's forgetting what his own positions are ? and he's betting that you will, too," Obama said. "We've got to name this condition that he's going through. I think it's called Romnesia."

Romney was headlining a rally in Florida Friday evening after spending much of the day in New York meeting with advisers.

The candidates were stepping off the campaign trail this weekend for debate preparations ahead of Monday's third and final face-off in Boca Raton, Fla. Romney was staying in South Florida to practice, while Obama and top aides headed to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, to prepare for the foreign policy-focused debate.

International issues competed with the economy for voters' attention Friday, as fresh questions arose over what the White House knew when about the deadly attack on Americans in Libya.

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions.

"His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.

Romney and Ryan have criticized the administration for saying at first that the attack was a spontaneous mob reaction to an anti-Muslim video on YouTube when they now acknowledge it was a terrorist attack. U.S. officials told The Associated Press that the CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of the attack to say there was evidence it was carried out by militants, although it's unclear who received that information right away.

Despite increased focus on Libya, the economy remains the No. 1 election issue for most voters.

Friday's jobs report showed the unemployment rate falling slightly in seven battleground states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin. Rates held steady at 5.7 percent in New Hampshire and 5.9 percent in Virginia. Unemployment in both states has long been well below the national average.

Nevada's 11.8 percent rate is the highest nationally. Iowa has the lowest battleground state rate, with 5.2 percent out of work.

Obama has staked his re-election prospects on the notion that the economic crisis he inherited is easing. He's been backed by positive trends for a handful of recent economic indicators, as well as polls showing the public's view of the economy is improving.

But millions of Americans are still out of work, giving Romney an opportunity to cast the president as ineffective in solving the country's economic troubles. Romney, too, has plenty of economic data to back up his argument, including disappointing earnings reports Friday from major companies, including Microsoft and McDonald's.

Both campaigns say the last round of data released ahead of Election Day is unlikely to sway voters who have been living the reality of the economic downturn and weak recovery for more than four years.

John Patterson, 25, a recent college graduate from North Carolina, said he doesn't have to look at unemployment numbers to know things aren't good in his home state. He's sent out resumes and had a few interviews but is still unemployed.

Patterson voted for Obama four years ago, but says he's not sure he'll do the same this time around.

"Things haven't really changed, have they?" he said. "I mean, too many people are still out of work."

Back in Ohio, Dianna Huddleston said the falling unemployment rate has done little to help her personal economic situation. Her husband lost his jobs a few years back when an aluminum producer in the region cut back. He eventually found work as a dishwasher, Huddleston said, but that position comes with much lower pay.

Huddleston says she doesn't plan to vote in the presidential election because "nothing is going to change here."

Obama hammers Romney over women, Iraq war

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - President Barack Obama hammered Republican Mitt Romney over women's rights and foreshadowed arguments he will make in an upcoming debate on foreign policy during a campaign stop on Thursday in the battleground state of New Hampshire.

The Democratic incumbent has rebounded since his sharper, more energetic performance in Monday night's debate helped make up for his heavily criticized, lackluster appearance in their first encounter, which gave Romney a boost in public opinion polls.

A Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll showed Obama holding a slight but steady lead, with 47 percent of likely voters saying they plan to vote for Obama compared to 44 percent for Romney, in line with the previous day's results.

"He's back on the more positive footing he was on going into convention season," said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.

"He sort of has redeemed himself, if you will, from that first debate."

Both Romney and Obama are pressing hard to win over women ahead of the November 6 election.

Obama has sought to build on any momentum he got from his last debate performance during two days of campaign stops, assailing Romney for not stating clearly his support for a law ensuring equal pay for women.

"Governor Romney still won't say whether or not he supported a law to protect that right, no matter how many times he's asked. This is not - this is not that hard," Obama said to a crowd of some 6,000 in New Hampshire.

"I've got two daughters. I want to make sure they get paid the same as somebody's sons for doing the same job. Pretty straightforward. Any confusion there?"

A Romney spokesman dismissed Obama's attacks.

"Today, President Obama only offered Granite State voters more misleading attacks to distract from his failed record, his reckless spending and his inability to present a discernible vision to move our country forward," said spokesman Ryan Williams.

With polls getting tight nationally, the focus is on swing states like Ohio and Florida that will likely decide the election. The Romney campaign said it was moving resources out of North Carolina, where it sees an increasing chance of winning, to allocate them to other battleground states.

Romney's economic plans have "resonated strongly" in the southern state and polls are increasingly widening, spokeswoman Sarah Pompei said.

The two men face off in their last debate on Monday in Florida, where the topic will be foreign policy.

"We've got a debate on Monday on foreign policy, and I'm very interested in seeing what Governor Romney has to say about that," Obama said.

"He said that it was 'tragic' the way I ended the war in Iraq. Last week he said we should still have troops in Iraq. ... I think bringing our troops home after doing the job they did in Iraq was the right thing to do."

Romney and Obama were to meet on Thursday at a political dinner in New York. Romney spent the day at a Manhattan hotel preparing for the debate and his evening speech.

The president is also scheduled to make an appearance on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," a popular news satire show.

Facebook SDK for Android updated to 3.0 beta

Android Central Android Central

Following the update for iOS developers a few weeks ago, Facebook has completely revamped the Android SDK, it said.

The new changes, touted as the “biggest overhaul” yet, are aimed at making it easier and faster to develop Android apps which plug into Facebook.

The company is also trying to make third-party user interfaces more consistent. New native UI controls pack built-in caching in order to make the whole experience faster. Developers will get the ability to integrate friend tagging and calling up nearby places.

It looks like new login controls to manage authentication are meant to help apps call up your Facebook identities and hold onto them, without having you authenticate too often—or more than once, conceivably. (This could be the start of a number of embarrassing gaffes, so watch your logins, people.)

On the backend, Facebook API calls can be done in batches now, which helps make everything faster. And with the emphasis on smartphones coming onto Facebook, it makes sense that developers now get a way to measure clicks and installs for mobile ads. So it seems the SDK has come along way since the first version was released way back in 2010.

Interested developers can get all the details here, or download the SDK here.

Keep Your Body Healthy And Happy With These Nutrition Tips ...

Posted by haleyjonas on Thursday, October 18, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Try not to be overwhelmed thinking about good nutrition. It can overwhelm them with the amount of nutrients a body needs. Keep reading for tips to help you get started.

Be smart when you shop for whole grain foods. You can?t depend on the color of a food to determine its grain content. Even if the label says ?100 percent wheat,? that doesn?t mean that it is completely whole grain. You must read the ingredients carefully.

TIP! Broccoli is a healthy addition to your diet. Broccoli contains an abundant amount of phytochemicals that help prevent cancer.

Diabetics have many nutritional challenges. These can be achieved via regular eating since that maintain healthy blood sugar levels. They must consume a lot of vegetables and fresh fruits, as well as the cobbler that will make the event. Try to eat them close to the same time each day.

When possible, stay away from any snack items that contains large percentages of fats, particularly saturated ones. You probably know to avoid fatty meats, but foods that have vegetable oil in them also tend to be high in saturated fats. These have oils that have higher saturated fats than items made from animals do. This could hurt the overall health of your body. Even in a food that is labeled a containing no cholesterol, saturated fats can increase your cholesterol.

TIP! Even though you may have heard differently, it is not unhealthy to eat red meat. Indeed, a regular portion of lean meat contains a lower amount of fat than a similar size portion of skin-on poultry.

Even if you aren?t a vegan, it?s possible to have a few vegetarian meals every week and improve your nutrition. This helps decrease unhealthy animal fat consumptions. In addition, it will save you money, help save the planet, and it?s delicious.

Eat more foods that contain a lot of water. Certain fruits such as strawberries, cantaloupe and cucumbers have a lot of water in them and when you eat them it helps you to stay hydrated. Being hydrated helps you to have healthy skin, hair and nails.

TIP! Get plenty of rest besides eating healthy foods and exercising regularly. As you sleep, your body absorbs nutrients and restores your muscles.

Working out regularly deals much with your stamina, willpower and dedication. It is important to maintain a positive mentality when you enter a workout session. In that regard, you can see that how you perceive exercise contributes greatly to how successful you will be. You must do things that help your mind and body to live healthier.

Simple, nutritious meals are even more delicious when enjoyed with your family. Keep handy foods that you are sure your family enjoys. This means everyone will eat well. Keep in mind that nutritious foods do not have a positive impact if they are not eaten, and therefore, it is important to ensure that you and your family actually ingest the items that impart overall health and wellness.

TIP! Most children enjoy being involved in their parent?s activities. Try involving your kids when making healthy meals, filling lunch boxes, or making nutritious snacks.

Eating foods that are rich in both vitamins A and C is important. Both of these vitamins are really important antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals that cause cell damage and increase the chance of serious disease. Vitamin A appears mostly in orange or dark green vegetables, and animal products. Vitamin C can be found in most vegetables and fruits, such as citrus fruits, broccoli and potatoes.

Raw vegetables are a great choice for a healthy snack. They can curb cravings, enhance nutrition and make you feel full rather quickly. The best part is that they require a minimum of preparation?almost as easy as opening up a bag of chips! They are also less of a hassle to prepare than typical snack foods. Raw veggies are great between meals in a nutritious diet.

TIP! It is important to keep yourself fed. Undereating is just as harmful as overeating.

Do you want to eat a lot less red meat? You could shake things up by using your meat as a condiment. You can use it to help add flavor and texture to vegetable or grain-based dishes. This practice is well-known in Eastern countries which have heart-healthy diets compared to the West.

Try and eat foods in their natural state whenever possible. Fresh, raw foods are not stripped of their nutrients the way that cooked and processed foods are.

TIP! Try always to encourage more drinking of water throughout the day. Try not limit milk and juice consumption to just one or possibly two meals, rather than making it available all the time.

Stock up on frozen vegetables. They are easy to prepare by themselves, or as a stir fry that can be served as a side dish along with chicken and beef. Since they are frozen, you need not worry they will spoil before you eat them.

One tip to stick with when you?re trying to lose weight is that you have to stay away from junk foods that do nothing good for your health. This doesn?t just mean unhealthy snacks, either. If a food has little or no nutritional value, you should avoid eating it.

TIP! For centuries, fish and other seafood have been a staple in the diets of cultures all over the globe. Over the last few decades, chicken and red meat have become more popular than seafood by far.

When you have the chance to swap ground turkey in favor of ground beef, be sure to choose meat mixes that have fewer calories and less fat. Ground turkey has just as many options for fat content as ground beef does.

TIP! If you have a hard time sleeping, adjusting your nutrition might help you. Some foods chill you out, but others perk you up.

If you crave sweets like chocolate, try eating dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is healthy in moderation, as it contains antioxidants, and it can help curb your cravings for sweets.

Keep your serotonin levels high by regularly engaging in whole grain products, bananas or baked potatoes. They also provide plenty of fiber, so you feel full much longer. Junk food will give you some energy because of the sugar but the effects will wear off quickly. Rid your diet of junk food in favor of healthy real food, and you will feel the difference.

TIP! Make sure that you are taking the time to pack your child healthy lunches and snacks. What they eat has a direct impact on how well they do in school and in their activities.

When you are preparing meat, grilling and baking are a great alternative to frying. If you typically prepare your foods with butter, replace this with cooking spray. If you are browning beef, strain the meat after cooking, and follow that with a rinse in hot water. This can remove much of the extra fat from the meat.

Change your milk from whole to skim or low fat, if you want to get unnecessary calories and fat out of your daily diet. The nutritional content of milk is the same regardless of fat content, so whole milk is useless except for the rare case where you want to gain weight.

TIP! With nutritious goals must come a well-balanced diet. As you think about each meal that you have, you should consider its nutrional content.

Hopefully, these tips have provided you with some very valuable information, as well as given you a way to organize all of the thoughts and information you may have already had on proper nutrition. Keeping these tips in mind when you start applying them to your diet can help you stick to a better diet.

Lots of people believe that if they skip meals, they can consume fewer calories throughout the day, which will lead to a more rapid rate of weight loss. Actually, reducing the calorie intake too much sends the body into starvation mode, and the metabolism slows to conserve fat and energy. Basically, if you want to lose weight, you must eat.

TIP! Prepare some well-balanced meals for a healthier diet. Your body needs many crucial nutrients to function correctly.

'Emmanuelle' Star and Erotic Film Pioneer Sylvia Kristel Dead at 60

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Sylvia Kristel, who played the title character in the groundbreaking erotic film "Emmanuelle," has died at the age of 60, the AFP reports.

Kristel, who had been suffering from cancer and was hospitalized earlier this year following a stroke, died in her sleep Wednesday night in the Hague, her talent agency said.

The actress was thrust into the spotlight in 1974 with the release of her big-screen debut "Emmanuelle," which chronicled the sexual exploits of a young woman traveling in Asia. The film became a worldwide success that has been seen by at least 350 million people across the globe, and helped legitimize the soft-porn genre. Kristel was 22 years at the time of its release.

Kristel would go on to star in a number of "Emmanuelle" sequels, including "Emmanuelle 2" and "Goodbye Emmanuelle," Typecast in erotic films, she also starred in sexually charged titles such as "Private Lessons" and "Lady Chatterley's Lover."

Kristel eventually developed a drug habit, and spent years fighting addiction.

Born in Utrecht, Holland, Kristel was sent to a religious boarding school as a preteen but launched a career as a model in her late teens. After winning the Miss TV Europe competition in 1973, she caught the attention of "Emmanuelle" director Just Jaeckin, who cast her in the film that would define her career, for good and for ill.

Kristel was "a wonderful woman, very pure, very innocent," Jaeckin told the AFP. "But the mark that Emmanuelle left on her was very hard for her."

Kristel had a stroke earlier this year after being treated for throat cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2002. She had also been battling liver cancer.

"Unfortunately, I was expecting," Jaeckin said. "I'm also relieved that she no longer has to suffer."

Kristel is survived by a son, Arthur.

Karzai: NATO can speed up handover of security

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? President Hamid Karzai said Thursday the nation's military and police are ready and willing to take full responsibility for security in the country if the U.S.-led international coalition decides to speed up the handover to Afghan government forces.

With support for the already unpopular war fading in the West, there has been growing speculation that NATO could accelerate withdrawal plans that currently call for the security transition to Afghan forces to be complete by the end of 2014, when all foreign combat troops are scheduled to leave the country.

"Afghans are ready to expedite the process of transition if necessary, and willing as well," Karzai said during a joint news conference with NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. "So this is in all aspects good news for us and good news for NATO."

A NATO diplomat said there was no discussion of speeding up the 2014 timeline during the meeting between Karzai and the alliance chief. The diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with alliance's regulations, said Karzai was eager to see the next stage of transition, which would have Afghan forces take charge of security for almost the entire country.

There are questions, however, about the ability of the Afghan forces to secure the country.

The Afghan army has grown to 184,676 soldiers, and the country's police force now numbers 146,339 officers ? putting them just short of the planned number of 352,000 members. But critics say the rapid expansion has not significantly improved their ability to plan and conduct operations without support from foreign forces in terms of logistics, air support and medical evacuations.

Furthermore, the number of Afghans leaving the army has remained stubbornly high, with 27 percent of troops either deserting or not re-enlisting despite the higher salaries offered. And though the number of volunteers is still high, the army needs to train about 50,000 recruits each year just to compensate for the loss.

Polls show that the 11-year war has little public support among NATO's 28 member states, most of which are cutting defense budgets as part of the austerity measures adopted to deal with the financial crises.

A recent upsurge in the number of insider attacks on coalition troops by Afghan soldiers or police ? or insurgents disguised in their uniforms ? has further undermined public support for the war in the West. At least 52 American and other NATO troops have died so far this year in those attacks.

In the past several months, there have been calls in the United States and elsewhere to accelerate the drawdown and to withdraw coalition troops by the end of next year.

Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance remains committed to help enable Afghan forces assume full responsibility for the country's security after 2014. The military alliance has also agreed to offer a smaller, post-2014 mission to help Afghan forces with training, advice and assistance.

"We are committed to continuing that cooperation with the Afghan national security forces," he said.

The secretary-general and NATO's governing body, the North Atlantic Council, were visiting Kabul Thursday for meetings with Karzai, coalition military commander Gen. John Allen and commanders of Afghan government forces.

The current strategy agreed to by NATO, its partners and Karzai's government is to enable the Afghans to take over the war against the Taliban and other insurgents by the end of 2014.

NATO started drawing down its forces earlier this year. It currently has 104,000 troops in Afghanistan ? 68,000 of them Americans ? down from 140,000 the alliance had here in 2011. Among those who left are the 33,000 U.S. troops deployed to Afghanistan after 2009, when President Barack Obama ordered a surge in a bid to quell the Taliban.

Karzai also said he did not believe the outcome of the upcoming presidential elections in the United States would affect Washington's long-term policy toward Afghanistan regardless of whether President Barack Obama or his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, emerges as the winner.

"America has a set strategy for Afghanistan and any government who comes in will follow that, so it will not affect Afghanistan," Karzai said.
