Digital Marketers Flock to Content Marketing [Survey Results ...

It?s rare that you see an entire industry segment agree on something. Such is the case among digital marketers, at least according to data from the recently-released Content Marketing Survey Report 2012?published by Econsultancy and content discovery platform Outbrain. ?One of the key findings of the Report (based on a survey of more than 1,300 digital marketing professionals working for brands, publishers, and agencies conducted in July and August 2012), is that over 90% of respondents believe content marketing will become more important over the next 12 months.

Well I could?ve told you that.

The Report also has many other fascinating nuggets of information relating to content marketing usage, objectives, strategies, tactics, organizational barriers and promotion.

Here is a brief summary of what I found most interesting (it should be noted that the respondents were split about evenly between ?in house? marketers working for a brand and agency representatives or consultants speaking about client usage of content marketing).

CONTENT MARKETING USAGE

According to the Report, 91% of in-house marketers use content to market their product or service (given that virtually everything these days is regarded as content, what are the other 9% are doing?). Importantly, 90% of in-house marketers and 93% of agencies/consultants believe that content marketing will become more important over the next 12 months (1% of marketers in both categories think it will be less important?someone needs to fire them).

CONTENT MARKETING STRATEGY?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

This part interested me. When asked if their company or clients have a defined content marketing strategy, the majority said no (see chart below):

This admission is especially shocking for agencies and consultants, with fully 29% not even planning on shaping a content marketing strategy for their clients over the next 12 months (for those clients, shoot me an email after reading this ? we should talk).

CONTENT MARKETING GOALS

In-house B2C marketers listed increased engagement (52%), increasing traffic to site (49%), and raising brand awareness (38%) as their top three content marketing objectives. B2B marketers largely agreed, citing increased engagement (58%) and increasing traffic to site (34%) as driving factors; however, they also included generating leads (44%) as a top content marketing objective.

Agencies and Consultants answered similarly, although they added sales into the mix of top content marketing objectives: increased engagement (43%), increasing traffic to site (39%), and increased sales (37%). This latter number makes sense, given that agencies/consultants are being paid to add to a brand?s bottom line.

These top content marketing objectives are somewhat predictable, and in any case not nearly as interesting as those not-commonly cited:

? In-House Marketers: thought leadership (18%), nurturing leads (11%)

? Agencies/Consultants: thought leadership (22%), nurturing leads (11%)

This data suggests that many digital marketers haven?t fully wrapped their heads around the import of content marketing, regarding it as a tool or ?thing? for engaging consumers and driving web traffic rather than seeing content marketing as a new approach, a long-term paradigm shift in how brands communicate with their target audience.

CONTENT MARKETING BY TYPE

Looking at the type of content many digital marketers are using also shows some revealing trends. For example, in-house marketers list social posts and updates (46%), email newsletters (50%), on-site news feature articles (29%), and press releases (27%) as the primary types of marketing content used.

All of this content seems brand-focused and promotional rather than consumer-focused and relevant to users. Yes, prospects and consumers want to receive information about new products and services. However, with the exception of blogs (63%), in-house marketers are largely ignoring the types of content that tend to provide a value add to consumers, such as ebooks (12%), whitepapers (23%), webinars/podcasts (23%), and Infographics (25%).

Agencies/Consultants perform a little bit better on these counts, but not by much: ebooks (13%), whitepapers (31%), webinars/podcasts (18%), and Infographics (25%).

TAKEAWAYS

The types of content marketing favored by the majority of digital marketers surveyed don?t seem to match up with their own description of effective content. When asked what simple phrase or adjective they would use to describe the kind of content that is most effective for marketing, the top words offered up were: Engaging, Informative, Relevant, Interesting.

Moreover, when asked whether they agreed or disagreed with certain statements pertaining to content marketing, the top three statements receiving the most universal agreement from agencies and in-house marketers alike were:

  • Content marketing is key to creating an emotional connection with customers.
  • Brands are becoming publishers.
  • Content marketing is more effective than advertising for consumer engagement.

If this survey is emblematic of the industry, than the majority of digital marketers believe one thing and do another. Granted, barriers exist that may be stymying their ability to implement cutting-edge content marketing services. In fact, a large number of digital marketers surveyed cite company politics, lack of human resources, budget constraints, and a genuine lack of understanding as barriers; these are all common issues faced by marketing technologies in early-stage adoption.

Having said that, those who are able to transcend these barriers and deliver quality, consumer-focused content are going to be the real winners in the new era of online content marketing.

Collaboration will seek to further understanding of the geology and composition of crude oil

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) and the University of Houston today announced they are working together to further understanding of the geology and composition of crude oil.

The collaboration will combine Agilent's expertise and state-of-the-art scientific instruments with the leading-edge petroleum research conducted within the University of Houston's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

The goal is to create applications that provide new insights into the discovery and use of this vital resource.

Under the agreement, Agilent is providing a portfolio of instruments valued at more than $1 million, including such advanced technology as microwave plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectroscopy (GC-QQQ), and gas chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (GC-QTOF).

"The University of Houston is pleased to be a part of this collaboration, which is an important research effort for the oil and gas industry and its ongoing efforts to better assess proven reserves and discover new deposits," said Rathindra Bose, the university's vice chancellor/vice president for research and technology transfer. "Thanks to this agreement, researchers in our Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences will have access to the most advanced instruments available today to further their research."

The instruments will be used to identify and measure the constituents in geological specimens or to separate, identify and measure the thousands of compounds found in crude oil samples. These types of studies aid in understanding the geology of oil-bearing formations, which is useful in the search for new deposits as well as in assessing the potential for exploitation of proven reserves. In addition, improvements in the methods used to characterize crude oil will allow it to be processed more efficiently, which can improve the yield from each barrel and lower the cost of refined products.

"The state-of-the-art instruments that Agilent is furnishing through this collaborative effort will allow the research teams at the University of Houston to move to the forefront of their research areas by generating data that has not been available to them until now," said Wayne Collins, global energy manager, Agilent. "This collaboration with a premier energy university reaffirms our commitment, as the market leader in instruments for this industry, to continue to develop new technologies and applications for our customers."

Over the three-year term of the collaboration, some of the work will also focus on developing the science of shale gas, which has recently transformed the energy outlook in the United States. New technologies that have allowed this resource to be tapped have opened vast new reserves and provided low-cost feedstocks to the petrochemical and chemical industries while also providing low-cost natural gas to allow some power plants to switch from coal, lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The research aims to investigate the science behind the extraction of shale gas and liquids to aid in evaluating the potential production of a particular formation as well as to provide guidance in avoiding detrimental environmental impact to ground water.

UK policeman accused over soccer stadium disaster to retire

LONDON (Reuters) - A senior police officer accused of taking part in a cover-up of police failings in the worst sporting disaster in British history - a soccer stadium crush in which 96 fans were killed - said on Thursday he would retire next year.

Norman Bettison, chief constable of West Yorkshire Police, said he would stand down in March to allow a full investigation into allegations about his "integrity" to be conducted.

Bettison, who denies any wrongdoing, was off-duty but present at the Hillsborough Stadium in the northern English city of Sheffield in 1989 when 96 Liverpool supporters were killed in a crowd crush.

A damning report last month uncovered evidence that the police response to the disaster had been flawed, that 41 lives could have been saved and that officers had tried to dishonestly deflect the blame on to fans.

More than 100 statements taken at the time had been doctored to remove evidence that painted the police in a negative light, the report found.

Following its publication, a police watchdog said it was considering two complaints against Bettison.

The most serious alleged that the police chief "was involved in the production and supply of misleading information" for official inquiries into the disaster, the watchdog said.

Bettison, who has been West Yorkshire's most senior officer since 2007, had originally been due to retire in January this year but had his term extended.

"However, recent weeks have caused me to reflect on what is best for the future of policing in West Yorkshire and I have now decided to set a firm date for my retirement of 31 March 2013," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Bettison has already apologized for saying last month that fans' behavior at Hillsborough had made the police's job harder than it needed to be.

Outside money fills airwaves in tight Senate races

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Campaign cash from outside political groups is flooding into conservative states with close Senate races like Indiana, Arizona and Montana, where residents are more accustomed to local news promos between football games than the relentless, often snarky attack ads.

Crossroads GPS, by far the biggest spender of any super PAC this cycle, barraged TV viewers in Indiana last week with a $1 million ad buy attacking Indiana Democratic Senate candidate Joe Donnelly for supporting the new health care law and the $831 billion economic stimulus package.

Super PACs aligned with Democrats and public employee unions returned the favor this week with their own $1 million buy in the state, accusing Republican Richard Mourdock of threatening auto worker jobs when he fought the federal bailout of Chrysler in 2009.

For better or worse, the deluge has boosted Mourdock's name recognition.

"When I walk down Meridian Street, people either give me an 'attaboy' or the finger," Mourdock said of his experiences lately on Indianapolis's main thoroughfare.

It is still unclear whether the roughly $150 million spent by Republican-aligned and Democratic-aligned groups in the nation's dozen or so tight Senate races has actually swayed the public one way or another. Despite a 2-1 outside spending advantage, the GOP's chances of flipping the three or four seats needed for control of the Senate have shrunk in the last few months.

The most expensive Senate battles are being fought in presidential battlegrounds like Florida ($19 million in outside spending), Ohio ($26 million) and Virginia ($21 million). But Democrats have matched Republican groups across the vast expanses of Republican-leaning states like Montana, North Dakota and Indiana, where a half million dollars will buy much more airtime than in places like Miami or Washington, D.C.

"Everybody is trying to figure out where they can get the most bang for their buck," said Darrell West, an expert in campaign finance at the Washington-based Brookings Institution. "So they look at the poll numbers and the size of the market, and they invest accordingly."

Arizona voters are starting to get a glimpse of the role outside groups are playing in this fall's elections. Last week, a Democratic super PAC, the Majority PAC, helped finance ads that attacked Republican Jeff Flake as someone who voted for the war in Iraq but voted against certain benefits for returning troops.

In turn, the anti-tax group Club for Growth announced Tuesday that it would be spending $500,000 in Arizona and Indiana on television ads making the case that electing the Democratic candidates in those states is tantamount to a "U.S. Senate controlled by liberals."

The ad barrage is the reality of elections shaped by the rise of super PACs, which can raise and spend money almost indiscriminately. Propelling the rush are different groups working under separate laws for giving, and they can be surprisingly nimble. Republican and Democratic campaign committees, as well as the Senate campaigns themselves, are joining the ad blitz.

For example, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee also aired its first ad in Arizona this week, criticizing Flake for supporting legislation that lets health plans opt out of covering certain health services based on religious reasons and for voting to cut funding to Planned Parenthood. The pitch, costing $526,000 for now, is directed at female voters.

For groups prohibited by law from coordinating, what they produce is surprisingly nimble and complementary. They also respond to opponents with lightning-fast speed, before increasingly large audiences.

Where the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee decided to extend its presence on air in Indiana by two weeks, Crossroads spent $600,000 over the summer, disappeared, and then returned with a $1 million blast. According to FEC documents, those ads have increasingly migrated from cheaper slots between local newscasts to more expensive slots during Sunday football and prime-time crime dramas like "CSI" and "NCIS."

Generally, the spots are attack ads, but many feature cameos by the candidates themselves.

Donnelly's latest spot features him standing in the middle of a country road while an actor playing Mourdock yells at him: "Hey, Donnelly! It's my way or the highway!" The Mourdock camp hit back with its own country-road spot, featuring a car being driven by Donnelly taking a hard left at the end of the road before veering through the mud.

In the more rural Montana, where Democrats and Republicans each reserved roughly $3 million in airtime, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has attacked incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Tester for opposing the repeal of federal inheritance taxes. Democrats and their allies have opted for a more populist attack against Republican candidate Denny Rehberg, attacking his comment last year about lobbying being "an honorable profession."

In addition to money from big outside groups like Crossroads and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, buys are being made by lesser-known groups like the 60 Plus Association, a conservative alternative to the AARP, and Majority PAC, Senate Democrats' super PAC.

Democratic super PACs have been outspent by Republican-aligned groups roughly 2-to-1. Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman Matt Canter argues his side has kept pace largely because Republican support groups are running outdated messages they used to corral tea party voters in 2010.

"Republicans continue to use the 2010 playbook that elected this tea party Congress and voters are sick and tired of the false partisan attacks," he said. Canter cites $20 million spent by Republican groups in Ohio and $17 million in Florida, then points to polls showing incumbent Democratic senators poised for re-election in those states.

But it's in states like Indiana ? where outside spending has already well surpassed the $5.6 million spent in Indiana's 2010 Senate race that Republican Dan Coats won against former Rep. Brad Ellsworth ? that the wash of money has been most surprising.

For example, Crossroads latest $4 million investment not only targets Florida and Virginia, but North Dakota and Montana.

Jason Miller, executive vice president of Jamestown Associates, which is writing ads for four Senate campaigns, including Mourdock's and Republican Linda Lingle's in Hawaii, said outside spending has made it more important for candidates to stick to their message.

"At the end of the day you still have to worry about playing your own game," he said.

Purported iPad mini parts caught on camera

Purported iPad mini parts caught on camera

With the iPad mini still set for unveiling this month, part leaks are likely to happen. Apple seems better able to guard against new products slipping out than updates, but the supply chain is big and long and there's just too many companies and people involved to keep everything behind locked vaults anymore. All that to preamble these pictures, which UkrainianiPhone sent our way, along with these highlights:

  1. Mini Jack place
  2. Mount of plastic WiFi cover
  3. NanoSim tray sticked to back panel for transportation
  4. mount for Lightning connector

Now one of the shots does appear to be an original Kindle display rather than the display we expect to see on an iPad mini -- namely a scaled down iPad display -- but otherwise everything seems to be where you'd expect it to be. As UkrainiPhone also points out, if accurate, Apple's anodized aluminum process will also be brought over from the iPhone 5 to the iPad mini.

So yes, Darth Vader-black and Storm Trooper white might not only come in 4-inches, but 7.85-inches this holiday season.

Nothing is official until Apple shows it off on stage, but if you're aching for a potential peak behind the October event curtain, hit the link bellow for a couple more pics.

More Akin abortion remarks stir criticism

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin is again drawing attention for comments about abortion ? this time, for saying that doctors are "giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant."

The Republican congressman from suburban St. Louis made the remark in a 2008 House speech. The video was being recirculated Wednesday on the Internet as Akin campaigns against Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill.

In 1979, an Illinois physician had his license suspended after being accused of performing abortions on women who weren't pregnant.

But a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman in Missouri called Akin's assertion ridiculous and an example of how he is out of touch with women.

Akin apologized last month after remarking in a TV interview that women have biological ways of avoiding pregnancy in what he called "legitimate rape."

White House says it thwarted cyberattack

7 hrs.

The White House is acknowledging an attempt to infiltrate its computer system but says it thwarted the effort

A White House official said the attack targeted an unclassified network. He said the attack was identified and that the system was isolated to prevent spread. He said there was no indication that any data was removed.

The official, who was not authorized to speak on the record about the attack, said there was no attempted breach of classified systems. The official described such "spear phishing" attacks as "not infrequent."

Last year, Google Inc. blamed computer hackers in China for a phishing effort against Gmail accounts of several hundred people, including senior U.S. government officials and military personnel. Last November, senior U.S. intelligence officials for the first time publicly accused China of systematically stealing American high-tech data for its own national economic gain.

The White House would not say whether the recent attack was linked to China.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, during a visit to China last month, raised the subject of China-based cyberattacks against American companies and the government.

News of the most recent attack came as the Obama administration is preparing an executive order with new rules to protect U.S. computer systems. After Congress failed this summer to pass a comprehensive cybersecurity bill, the White House said it would use executive branch authorities to improve the nation's computer security, especially for networks tied to essential U.S. industries, such as electric grids, water plants, and banks.

An initial draft of the order included provisions for voluntary cybersecurity standards for companies, a special council run by the Homeland Security Department and a review to determine if existing cybersecurity regulations are adequate.

But by issuing the executive order just weeks before the election, the White House risks complaints that President Barack Obama is anti-business from Republicans and the same pro-business groups that killed the legislation on Capitol Hill. They argued the bill could lead to costly rules and regulations that would burden companies without reducing the risks.
