Phyllis Diller in Stop-Motion, Singing "You're ... - Tv Food and Drink

When I pre-interviewed Phyllis Diller over the phone for her appearance later in the week on GSN Live, I told her that I knew all the lyrics to her song, ?You?re Different,? from the 1967 stop-motion animated film Mad Monster Party. She laughed and said, ?Well, you?ll have to sing it for me.? Though that may have just been a polite remark on her end, I took it far more seriously. When Phyllis Diller asks you to sing for her, you do it.

So in between segments, I ran over to where she was seated on the set, leaned down, cupped my hand against her ear and sang her the first two verses as quietly and as quickly as I could. I was met with a giant trademark Phyllis cackle, and when I finished she placed my hands between hers and said, ?Thanks for the memory.? One of my favorite television producer moments, and one I intend to share with everyone willing to lesson until my dying day.

Check out the song below. Then be sure to go sing it to someone you love and admire.

Quora Is On A Quest For Users With Its New Embeddable Quotes

Quora Embeddable QuotesIt's a shame Quora doesn't get more traffic considering how fun and informative it is. So to raise awareness, today Quora launches an embeddable quote feature that lets any website host its content. The embeds?make citation easier, and trackbacks show authors where their questions and answers are ending up. I've embedded Quora's announcement of the feature in this post which will show you how it looks as soon as the Wordpress updates to handle the embeds. comScore pegs Quora at 1.5 million monthly uniques, up 300% in the last year, but it's still far from becoming a household name. Like Twitter's push to get tweets on TV a few years ago, Quora embeddable quotes could get it the off-site eyeballs it needs to make learning more mainstream.

Obama warns Syria of military ?red line? on chemical weapons

President Barack Obama warned Monday that he would consider military force if Syria's Bashar Assad either tries to relocate his regime's arsenal of chemical and biological weapons or attempts to use them on his own people in a bid to crush an uprising that could topple him from power. President Barack Obama speaks after dropping by in the press briefing room at the White House (Larry Downing/R??

"I have, at this point, not ordered military engagement in the situation," Obama told reporters during a surprise question-and-answer session in the White House briefing room.

"We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation," he said.

Syria said in late July that it possessed chemical weapons and could use them to fend off any "external aggression" but not to crush rebels against Assad's rule.

"We're monitoring that situation very carefully. We have put together a range of contingency plans," Obama said. "That's an issue that doesn't just concern Syria. It concerns our close allies in the region, including Israel. It concerns us. We cannot have a situation where chemical or biological weapons are falling into the hands of the wrong people."

"We have communicated in no uncertain terms with every player in the region that that's a red line for us and that there would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movement on the chemical weapons front or the use of chemical weapons. That would change my calculations significantly."

How pan-fried meat could raise prostate cancer risk

Multiple studies show men might cut their risk of prostate cancer with dietary interventions. A new investigation suggests eating pan-fried red meat boosts the chances of advanced prostate cancer by as much as 40%, depending on how many servings a guy consumes each week. Pan-fried meat produces smoke that permeates meat with carcinogens; seemingly contributing to the disease.

In the study, investigators at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC), led by Mariana Stern, Ph.D., associate professor of preventive medicine found that men who eat more than 1.5 servings of red meat per week had a 30% higher risk of developing advanced prostate cancer.

Past studies have suggested that red meat contributes to the disease that is the second leading cause of death from cancer and affects 1 in 6 American men. According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 36 men die from the disease.

The new study shows another link between eating red meat and prostate cancer risk, but suggests it also might be the result of how meat is cooked. Eating a high fat diet is also linked to higher chances of the disease.

Cooking red meat at high temperatures produces cancer causing agents that are potent, known as heterocyclic amines (HCAs). Other carcinogens, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are formed during the grilling or smoking of meat at high temperatures. Smoke from the meat that forms from dripping fat leaves deposits of PAH?s in the meat.

A boost in prostate cancer risk was also found by the researchers in previous studies for men who eat fried fish and poultry. The current study found fewer cases of the disease among men who reported eating baked poultry.

Esther John, Ph.D., CPIC senior research scientist, and in Los Angeles by Sue A. Ingles, DrP.H., associate professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC said in a press release, "In addition, men who ate more than 2.5 servings of red meat cooked at high temperatures were 40 percent more likely to have advanced prostate cancer."

One of the worst red meat contributing to prostate cancer is hamburgers, but not steak, according to the study authors, especially among Hispanic men.

"We speculate that these findings are a result of different levels of carcinogen accumulation found in hamburgers, given that they can attain higher internal and external temperatures faster than steak," Stern explains.

Stern says the finding which is only observational, but important for public health. Eating a healthful diet that includes a variety of fruits and vegetables and avoiding fried red meat, fish and poultry could be an easy enough intervention for men who want to lower their chances of developing prostate cancer.

Car bomb kills eight near Turkey's border with Syria

HAKKARI, Turkey (Reuters) - A car bomb a senior Turkish politician blamed on Kurdish separatists exploded near a police station in a city near Turkey's southeastern border with Syria on Monday, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens more.

TV footage from Gaziantep showed a bus and the surrounding area ablaze and smoke billowing into the sky as firemen tried to fight the fire. Ambulances ferried casualties to hospital while anxious residents looked on.

"Unfortunately we lost eight citizens and nearly 60 people are getting treated at several hospitals according to our initial information," Erdal Ata, Gaziantep's governor, told reporters.

The explosion, which officials said was caused by a remote-controlled car bomb, is likely to further strain already tense relations between Turkey and its war-torn neighbor Syria.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but southeastern Turkey is frequently the scene of attacks by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union.

Turkey has accused Syria of supporting the PKK, which launched a separatist insurgency in the region 28 years ago during which more than 40,000 people have been killed.

"The PKK ... is trying to provoke our citizens by targeting the civilian population directly. Our citizens must remain cool-headed," Omer Celik, deputy chairman of the ruling AK Party, wrote in his Twitter account.

ATTACK FOLLOWS TURKEY AID EFFORTS

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has tried to limit the impact of the conflict in Syria, where the PKK is exerting growing authority in some border areas. Ankara believes PKK militants are receiving arms from Syrian forces.

The attack came just two days after Turkey began handing out food and other humanitarian aid on the border to refugees fleeing the 17-month-old uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Turkey has opened a center in Gaziantep to receive international aid but is struggling to cope with an influx of almost 70,000 refugees. Before the conflict in Syria halted trade across the border, Gaziantep was a gateway into Turkey for many Syrians.

Turkey initially cultivated good relations with Assad's administration but relations have deteriorated sharply since the Syrian uprising began. Erdogan is now one of Assad's harshest critics and has raised the possibility of military intervention in Syria if the PKK becomes a threat there.

Turkey suspects a major Syrian Kurdish movement, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), of having links with the PKK. Turkish analysts believe Assad let the PYD take control of security of some towns in northern Syria to prevent locals from joining the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA).

Fighting between the Turkish army and PKK militants has intensified in recent weeks in Turkey's southeastern Semdinli district bordering Iran and Iraq.

Suspected PKK members ambushed a Turkish military bus in western Turkey earlier this month, an attack outside the group's regular field of operation in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

Earlier on Monday, two Turkish soldiers were killed by a landmine on a road in southeast Turkey, an attack also believed to have been carried out by PKK militants, security sources said.

Van Buren Township dad killed in crash suspected of strangling ...

Police say they believe Michael Vanderlinden strangled and stabbed his wife and stabbed his 4- and 7-year-old sons to death before dying in a car crash Thursday.

Police identified Linda Vanderlinden, 34, and her children, Matthew, 4, and Julien, 7, on Friday, the day after they were found in their bedrooms in their Van Buren Township home.

Police found the door unlocked and an 8 1/2-inch butcher knife inside, which police say they believe was used in the killings. They had gone to the house to notify Linda Vanderlinden that her husband was killed earlier that morning in a head-on crash in Indiana that also killed another man. Authorities said Michael Vanderlinden was driving the wrong way at the time.

Police said in a news release Friday that the marriage might have been strained and that Vanderlinden was in the process of moving out of the home. Friends and family have told police that he might have been abusive ? whether verbal or physical was unclear.

?While the husband, Michael, is suspected of being responsible for the killings, we have not reached any conclusions at this time, and our investigation continues,? Van Buren Township Police Capt. Greg Laurain said.

Vanderlinden was believed to have attempted suicide last year with pills and alcohol when police were called to the family?s home in November. Emergency personnel determined that Vanderlinden, 38, had grabbed his wife during an argument, Laurain said.

Laurain said Vanderlinden pleaded with his wife not to leave him. She ultimately returned, but Vanderlinden was taken to the hospital. Laurain said the Wayne County prosecutor decided not to press charges because of a lack of evidence.

Laurain said Linda Vanderlinden?s cause of death was strangulation. She had a secondary stab wound to the chest. The children died of multiple stab wounds to the chest and arms.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner?s Office has not determined when the killings occurred.

Michael Vanderlinden was last seen in his neighborhood about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He crashed head-on into a car on I-94 near Michigan City, Ind., while driving the wrong way early Thursday. The driver of the other car, Juan Nelson, 45, of Portage, Ind., was killed. Laurain said a witness told authorities that Vanderlinden was driving with his headlights off at the time. Indiana State Police could find nothing ?of evidentiary value? inside Vanderlinden?s burned vehicle.

Data-destroying malware found targeting energy companies

Steve Evans Published 17 August 2012

Shamoon doesn't steal data but wipes important files and kills PCs

Security researchers have uncovered malware targeting companies in the energy sector - but instead of stealing sensitive information, it looks to disable infected PCs.

The malware was spotted by Symantec, who have dubbed it Disttrack or Shamoon. It has targeted at least one company in the energy sector and works by corrupting important files on an infected machine and then overwriting the MBR (Master Boot Record), which can render a PC unusable.

According to McAfee, the data is lost permanently and the machine is not recoverable.

No further information has been given on who the target was or how destructive the malware has been.

Earlier this week it was reported by Bloomberg that Saudi oil company Aramco was recovering after its computers were infected with a virus. It is not clear if the two are related however. What is clear though is that companies in the Middle East are increasingly the target of cyber attacks from the likes of Israel and the US. Flame, Stuxnet, Duqu and more have all been spotted causing havoc across the Middle East.

Shamoon contains three modules, according to Symantec. The first of these is called Dropper, which is the source of the infection and installs the other modules of infected PCs. The second is called Wiper, which destroys the data and the PC and finally Reporter, which sends details of its activity back to base.

The second of these modules, Wiper, brings to mind the malware of the same name that targeted Iranian facilities earlier this year. It was found to be deleting sensitive information regarding Iran nuclear capabilities. It was while researching the original Wiper that Kaspersky Lab found Flame, described as the most sophisticated malware ever created.

However Kaspersky researchers have claimed that this new Wiper is unrelated to the original. "It is more likely that this is a copycat, the work of a script kiddies inspired by the story," the company said.

Symantec added that, "threats with such destructive payloads are unusual and are not typical of targeted attacks."

Real estate prices drop in July, sales rose in Myrtle Beach area ...

Real estate prices dropped in July along the coast even though they rose statewide, according to data released this week from the South Carolina Realtors association.

The median price of homes and condos sold in Horry, Georgetown and southern Brunswick County, N.C., dropped 2.3 percent, to $136,750, in July compared to the same month last year, according to SCR. Statewide, the median price jumped 4 percent, to $156,000 in July compared to the same month in 2011.

Tom Maeser, a real estate analyst with the Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors, said the area continues to see prices drop because the foreclosure rate is higher with investors -- who make up two-thirds of the market -- than it is with permanent homeowners. Prices are driven by foreclosures in the area and will continue to drop until the area gets rid of them and short sales, Maeser said.

About 30 percent of single-family home sales and about 34 percent of condo sales still are either foreclosures or short sales, Maeser said.

Radha Herring, the broker-in-charge of Watermark Real Estate Group, said the banks halt on foreclosures are also finally making way through the system, so until they make it all the way through the system, the area is going to see a slight decline in prices in some areas.

Even though prices have been dropping, real estate sales jumped in July along the coast for at least the third consecutive month.

The number of homes and condos sold in Horry, Georgetown and southern Brunswick County, N.C., rose 14.2 percent, to 723, in July compared to the same month last year, according to SCR.

Herring said the increased sales are a continue indication that buyers are taking advantage of an opportunistic market.

?Right now it is a buyer?s market and people realize the value of the market,? Maeser said. He said more properties have been selling in the $100,000 to $250,000 price range. ?Even though the prices dropping is not good for sellers it is wonderful for buyers and we are seeing that in sales.?

The Hilton Head Island area had the biggest increase in sales, jumping 25.7 percent, to 279 homes, condos and villas sold, in July compared to the same month last year, according to SCR. Spartanburg jumped 25.1 percent in sales in July, the Southern Midlands and the Western Upstate both jumped 20.8 percent, according to the association.

Statewide, sales increased 13.4 percent, to 4,840 homes, condos and villas sold in July compared to the same month in 2011, according to SCR.
