The X-47B Doesn't Need A Pilot to Land on an Aircraft Carrier [Video]

As the role UAVs in the US military expands, the demands placed on these unmanned platforms grow as well. One of the most important new abilities these autonomous fliers must have is the ability to land atop a thin strip of tarmac rolling on the high seas. And that's just what the new Northrop Grumman X-47B will do. More »

During my tenure at the school I was exposed to the unhealthy social interactions in which the students engaged. As early as kindergarten, 5-year old girls were ostracized or were alienating other girls based on skin color, hair texture and/or perceived lack of financial wealth. It was in this setting surrounded by 5-11 year old girls who were already showing signs of fractured self-esteem that Love Grows was conceived.?

Church & Dwight 2Q profit falls 4 pct, shares drop

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) ? Church & Dwight Co., which makes Arm & Hammer and Oxi Clean products and Trojan condoms, said Tuesday its second-quarter net income fell 4 percent, as consumers shifted their spending toward the company's less-profitable products.

The profit beat Wall Street predictions by a penny, while the revenue fell slightly short. But Church & Dwight also projected a lower-than-expected third-quarter profit and full-year earnings roughly in line with Wall Street predictions, warning that it expects tough consumer spending conditions to continue. Its shares tumbled 7 percent in morning trading.

The Princeton, N.J.-based consumer products company earned $79.3 million, or 56 cents per share, down from $82.6 million, or 57 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue rose 3.2 percent to $696.4 million from $674.9 million.

Analysts, on average, expected a profit of 55 cents per share on $702.2 million in revenue, according to a FactSet poll.

James Craigie, the company's chairman and CEO, said Church & Dwight's sales continue to get a boost from the introduction of new products, including high-tech cat litters and musical children's toothbrushes.

In addition, the company continues to expand its presence in the $300 million vibrator market, which it joined in 2005 with its Trojan brand. This year, the company is adding a line of full-sized vibrators, he said.

"We are very pleased with the distribution and sales gains at our entire vibrations line, which we believe has been aided by the popularity of the 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' novel," Craigie said.

Domestic sales of consumer goods rose 5 percent to $506.5 million, mainly as result of strong demand for the company's Arm & Hammer laundry detergent. Higher volumes increased the business' sales by 8.6 percent, but a shift toward less-profitable products and weaker pricing reduced sales by 3.6 percent, the company said.

International sales of consumer products fell 3.7 percent to $121.3 million, as lower European demand pulled organic sales down 2.7 percent. Meanwhile, overall sales of specialty products increased 3 percent to $68.6 million on higher prices and volume.

Church & Dwight said it expects the tough economic conditions to continue for the rest of the year, with high unemployment and consumer worries about the economy hurting its growth.

Based on its results for the first half of the year, the company said it expects to post a third-quarter profit of 58 cents per share and an adjusted full-year profit of $2.41 to $2.43 per share.

Analysts polled by FactSet expect a third-quarter profit of 61 cents per share and a full-year profit of $2.43 per share.

Church & Dwight shares fell $3.72, or 6.5 percent, to $51.98 in morning trading, after dropping as low as $50.64 earlier in the day. Over the past 52 weeks, the company's shares have traded between $37.28 and $59.27.

Surveys That Pay ? Surveys For Pay | Make A Money Machine.com

Article by Melahn Vosika

Is it really achievable to make cash at home utilizing surveys that pay?

Why don?t companies use unpaid volunteers? Do they absolutely have to give money to get enough participants? Is it all a scam?

The fact of the matter is that businesses hold thousands of surveys that pay every day in about each industry you can think of. They all require this crucial data: Wal-Mart, Amazon, Ebay and many others consistently offer surveys that pay.

These companies conduct surveys for money because each bit of data they can discover is money to them, and if they don?t, their rivals will. And if they want it done accurately, a cash prize will do it each time.

Although the companies have some costs associated in conducting surveys for pay, the consumer information generated more than makes up for it. The intention of the pay-off is to guarantee honest answers and guarantee that every survey for money entry will be completed.

In the era prior to the internet, businesses conducted intricate market research events, compensating survey-takers for their time and their travel-related expenses. These were costly events, with budgets into the millions each year, but they still demonstrated to be profitable investments for the companies that conducted them.

Today, businesses conserve millions of dollars by conducting surveys that pay on the internet, which has a collateral effect of growing the total paid to each partaker.

If you desire to earn a dependable income from home, surveys that pay are one of the best chances.

There are many hints you have to be familiar with if you desire to make the most out of surveys that pay. You can?t expect to earn a lot of cash straightaway, but these hints will hasten the process.

The main determinant of your success with surveys that pay is your commitment level and your determination. If you want to generate a substantial income, you need to treat surveys that pay like a business or job. Even if the first couple of surveys for cash you take pay you only a couple of dollars, take as many as attainable to get yourself started.

You ought to make a collection of fresh email addresses for the online survey accounts you create. If you don?t, you could see a surveys for money message and think it?s junk or a personal message. You?ll easily discover the top paying surveys as they come in if you use a separate email address.

Make sure you always give authentic responses when you take surveys that pay. If you don?t, you could find yourself blacklisted from upcoming surveys for money. Survey sites that pay frequently compare your responses to identical questions across surveys for symmetry.

From time to time you will find a survey that offers a sweepstakes entrance in place of money. These surveys frequently have few survey-takers, which gives you a considerable chance to win. The majority of partakers bypass sweepstakes entry surveys that pay because they want money for surveys, but you shouldn?t. You can win worthwhile prizes including televisions, appliances, trips, thousands of dollars and more.

Be patient and the bonuses will show up. Certain survey sites that pay hold back the top paying surveys until you?ve completed many lower-paying surveys, so keep going to reach the large payments. If you stick with it and create a history with the survey research company, you may be solicited to an online focus group with a wage of or greater per hour.

The key to surveys that pay is perseverance and dedication. Have at it.

Nanoparticle discovery opens door for pharmaceuticals

ScienceDaily (Aug. 7, 2012) ? What a University of Central Florida student thought was a failed experiment has led to a serendipitous discovery hailed by some scientists as a potential game changer for the mass production of nanoparticles.

Soroush Shabahang, a graduate student in CREOL (The College of Optics & Photonics), made the finding that could ultimately change the way pharmaceuticals are produced and delivered.

The discovery was based on using heat to break up long, thin fibers into tiny, proportionally sized seeds, which have the capability to hold multiple types of materials locked in place. The work, published in the July 18 issue of Nature, opens the door to a world of applications.

Craig Arnold, associate professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University and an expert in laser material interactions who did not work on the project, said no one else in the field has been able to accomplish this feat.

With a new non-chemical method of creating identical particles of any size in large quantities, "the possible applications are up to your imagination," Arnold said.

The most immediate prospect is the creation of particles capable of drug delivery that could, for example, combine different agents for fighting a tumor. Or it could combine a time-release component with medications that will only activate once they reach their target-infected cells.

"With this approach you can make a very sophisticated structure with no more effort than creating the simplest of structures," said Ayman Abouraddy, an assistant professor at CREOL and Shabahang's mentor and advisor. Abouraddy has spent his career, first at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and now at UCF, studying the fabrication of multimaterial fibers.

The technique relies on heat to break molten fibers into spherical droplets. Imagine water dripping from a faucet. Glass fibers are perhaps best known as the cylindrical cables that transmit digital information over long distances. For year, scientists have been looking for ways to improve the purity of glass fibers to allow for faster, disruption-free transmission of light waves.

Shabahang and fellow graduate student Joshua Kaufman were working on just such a project, heating and stretching glass fiber on a homemade tapering machine. Shabahang noticed that instead of the desired result of making the center of the cable thinner, the material actually broke apart into multiple miniature spheres.

"It was kind of a failure to me," Shabahang said.

However, when Abouraddy heard what had happened he knew right away that this "mistake" was a major breakthrough.

While at MIT, Abouraddy and his mentor, Yoel Fink, a professor of materials science and current director of MIT's Research Laboratory of Electronics, said they were told by a theoretician that molten optical fiber should align with a process known as Rayleigh instability, which explains what causes a falling stream of fluid to break into droplets.

At the time, the MIT group was focused on producing fibers containing multiple materials. The team produced fibers by heating a scale model called a "preform" and stretching it apart much the way taffy is made. The process is known as thermal drawing.

Shabahang's experiment shows that by heating and then cooling multimaterial fibers, the theoretical became reality. Uniform particles that look like droplets are produced. Moreover, Shabahang demonstrated that once the spheres form, additional materials can be added and locked into place like LEGO building blocks, resulting in particles with sophisticated internal structures.

Especially significant is the creation of "beach ball" particles consisting of two different materials melded together in alternating fashion, similar to the stripes on a beach ball.

Kaufman, Shabahang and Abouraddy contributed to the Nature article in addition to Guangming Tao from CREOL, UCF; Esmaeil-Hooman Banaei from the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, UCF; Daosheng S. Deng, Department of Chemical Engineering, MIT; Xiangdong Liang, Department of Mathematics, MIT; Steven G. Johnson, Department of Mathematics, MIT; and Yoel Fink from MIT.

Some of the funding for the project was made available by the National Science Foundation, the Oak Ridge Associated Universities through a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Geils Band, has filed a lawsuit against the other members of the group over use of the name in an upcoming tour that doesn't feature the guitarist, Reuters?reports.?Geils names band members Richard Salwitz, Danny Klein, Peter Wolf and Seth Justman in the lawsuit filed in Boston Superior Court, claiming they "planned and conspired" to exclude Geils from a tour and are unlawfully using the group's trademarked name.

The 15 best whistling songs of all time: J. Geils Band -- "Centerfold"

"Together they're the J. Geils Band, but separately they're Mr. Wolf, Mr. Salwitz , Mr. Klein and Mr. Justman," said Geils' lawyer, Charles Grimes. "They do not have the right to take his name and use it, and try to deny him the right to use his own name."

Ohio hospital gun victim was in disabled state

MASSILLON, Ohio (AP) ? A woman whose husband of 45 years is accused of shooting her in the head in her hospital bed in a possible mercy killing had been in the intensive care unit in an extremely disabled state, a prosecutor said on Monday.

Barbara Wise was incapacitated before John Wise stood at her bedside and shot her on Saturday with a handgun, Akron assistant city prosecutor Craig Morgan said.

John Wise entered his wife's room at Akron General Medical Center and fired at least one round from the handgun, police said. One shot was fired, hospital officials said.

Barbara Wise, 65, was declared dead on Sunday morning. She had been at the hospital in a "previously extremely disabled state," said Morgan, who wouldn't specify her ailments.

"The evidence would suggest that all those things were in place before Mr. Wise allegedly went in there and shot her," he said.

Wise entered the hospital through the main entrance and went up to his wife's room without drawing any attention, apparently keeping the handgun concealed, hospital spokesman Jim Gosky said.

Hospital policy does not allow guns on the hospital's campus, and there are numerous signs around the main entrances prohibiting them, Gosky said.

Hospital security officers ran from the ground floor's emergency department to the ICU's third floor following a code silver, which alerts the hospital that someone has a weapon, Gosky said. A distinctive pop sound drew a physician's attention to respond, too. Akron police soon followed.

Gosky said it appeared no one else was in the room at the time of the shooting, and no one else was harmed in what he called "an isolated incident."

John Wise, 66, has an initial court appearance on Tuesday in Akron Municipal Court. He was in police custody at an undisclosed location on Monday, and no attorney had been assigned to him.

Barbara Wise's autopsy was rescheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday, and it will likely upgrade John Wise's attempted aggravated murder charge to a more serious type of murder charge, police Capt. Dan Zampelli said.

John Wise was going to court with that initial charge because it was filed Saturday, said Morgan, who expected the charge to change based on the evidence and the death. He would not say if the charge would be upgraded to murder or reflect a mercy killing.

After the shooting, Wise surrendered to hospital security and was restrained until police arrived. He has cooperated with investigators, Zampelli said.

The Wises lived in a brick bungalow with well-kept landscaping on a short street in Massillon, 25 miles south of Akron. No one answered when an Associated Press reporter knocked on the door Monday.

Neighbor Crystal Maxhimer, who lives two houses away, said she knew the couple only in passing. She said she frequently saw them working on their yard together.

Officials are looking into whether John Wise shot his wife in a mercy killing, Zampelli said. Police are still trying to determine why Barbara Wise had been in the hospital, though he confirmed she had been in critical condition and in the ICU for several days.

"Certainly him wanting to end his wife's suffering is one of the motives we're looking into," Zampelli said.

Emergency personnel responded to the Wises' home on July 28 for a medical call, Massillon fire Chief Tom Burgasser said. Privacy rules prevented him from releasing additional information, but he said the fire department treated a patient for a medical condition that involved advanced life support including oxygen and a heart monitor.

Burgasser could not confirm if the patient was Barbara Wise but said the patient was taken to Affinity Medical Center in Massillon. A hospital spokeswoman said she could not disclose any information about patients because of privacy rules.
