(AP) ? Tens of thousands of people marched in Mexico's capital on Saturday to protest Enrique Pena Nieto's apparent win in the country's presidential election, accusing his long ruling party of buying votes.

The protesters were angered by allegations that Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party gave out bags of groceries, pre-paid gift cards and other goods to voters ahead of July 1 national elections.

The students, unionists and leftists in the march carried signs reading, "Pena, how much did it cost to become president?" and "Mexico, you pawned your future for 500 pesos." Mexico City officials put the size of the crowd that reached its central Zocalo plaza at 50,000.

"The fraud was carried out before (the election), buying votes, tricking the people," said Gabriel Petatan Garcia, a geography student who carried a sign in Finnish.

Protesters also carried signs in English, Japanese, French, German and other languages to call the attention of the international press.

Pena Nieto, a youthful, 45-year-old married to a soap opera star, won last Sunday's election by 6.6 percentage points, according to the official count, bringing the PRI back to power after 12 years in opposition. The party had ruled Mexico for 71 consecutive years, with what critics say was the help of corruption, patronage and vote fraud.

PRI officials deny the vote-buying charge and say the vote was free and fair.

The final vote count had Pena Nieto getting 38.21 percent support, leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party with 31.59 percent, and Josefina Vazquez Mota of the conservative National Action Party with 25.41. The small New Alliance Party got 2.29 percent.

The final vote count must be certified in September by the Federal Electoral Tribunal. The tribunal has declined to overturn previously contested elections, including a 2006 presidential vote that was far closer than last Sunday's.

Accusations of vote-buying began surfacing in June, but sharpened later when people rushed to grocery stores on the outskirts of Mexico City to redeem pre-paid gift cards worth about 100 pesos ($7.50). Many said they got the cards from PRI supporters before the elections.

Lopez Obrador said millions of voters had received either pre-paid cards, cash, groceries, construction materials or appliances.

Some marchers covered the heads of statues with plastic shopping bags from Soriana ? the supermarket chain where the gift cards were redeemable ? to underline their protest.

"We have to come out in the streets to denounce that the PRI bought votes, and there were people who sold them," said 32-year-old psychologist Raquel Ruiz.

Some protesters felt that overturning the election result would be difficult at this point, while others thought there were judicial means to still prevent Pena Nieto from assuming the presidency.

Lopez Obrador said he will file a formal legal challenge to the vote count in electoral courts in the coming days based on the allegation that PRI vote-buying illegally tilted millions of votes.

Simply giving away such gifts is not illegal under Mexican electoral law, as long as the expense is reported to electoral authorities. Giving gifts to influence votes is a crime, though is not generally viewed as grounds for overturning an election.

Leonardo Valdes, the president of the Federal Electoral Institute, has said he doesn't see any grounds for overturning the results but that an investigation into the gift cards had been launched.

PRI spokesman Eduardo Sanchez said earlier this week that the gift-card event had been "a theatrical representation" mounted by the left. Sanchez claimed supporters of Lopez Obrador took hundreds of people to the stores, dressed them in PRI T-shirts, gave them gift cards, emptied store shelves to create an appearance of panic buying, and brought TV cameras in to create the false impression that the PRI had given out the cards.

Cesar Yanez, the spokesman for Lopez Obrador's campaign, denied the PRI accusation.

Common child illness linked to Cambodia killer

(AP) ? A deadly form of a common childhood illness has been linked to many of the mysterious child deaths in Cambodia that caused alarm after a cause could not immediately be determined.

The World Health Organization and Cambodian Health Ministry say lab tests have confirmed that a virulent strain of hand, foot and mouth disease, known as EV-71, is to blame for many of the 59 cases reviewed, including 52 deaths. The numbers were lowered from their initial report of 62 cases.

Last year, the disease sickened more than 110,000 people in Vietnam and killed 166, mostly children under 3.

The disease has been raging across Asia, and usually causes a telltale rash. WHO spokeswoman Aphaluck Bhatiasevi says rash was seen in only a few of the Cambodian cases.

PFT: Broncos say iPad playbooks give them edge

Roger GoodellAP

[Editor's note:? The eight-page, single-spaced letter from Commissioner Roger Goodell affirming the suspensions of the four players accused of involvement in the Saints' bounty program raises several intriguing points, arguments, and circumstances.? We're breaking them up into separate posts, because after all a cow can't milk itself.]

Accused of not being an impartial arbitrator in the Saints bounty case, Commissioner Roger Goodell has responded by explaining that he merely has implemented the procedures for which the players collectively bargaining.

The lawsuits challenging Goodell?s final ruling as to the suspensions of Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, Saints defensive end Will Smith, Packers defensive end Anthony Hargrove, and Browns linebacker Scott Fujita focus on the claim that Goodell wasn?t capable of being a fair and impartial judge, because he had his mind made up before the June 18 appeal hearing ? as evidenced by his public comments defending the discipline he imposed.

?[T]hat is precisely what the Union agreed to,? Goodell writes in the July 3 letter upholding the suspensions.? ?It did so following extensive discussion and negotiation.? The Players Association and the League agreed not to interject a third-party into the review process, but instead to leave in place the longstanding practice of review by the Commissioner of ?[a]ll disputes involving? Commissioner action regarding conduct detrimental? to the game.

Goodell also explains that ?prior announcement of the basis for discipline cannot render the Commissioner incapable of hearing an appeal due to the appearance of bias or any other reason.?

?In short,? Goodell explains, ?I was no less capable of hearing these appeals in an unbiased manner than I have been of hearing, under this CBA and its predecessor, numerous other appeals involving conduct detrimental.? Nor, given the review process to which the parties agreed in the CBA, was there any basis for asserting an appearance of bias.?

While a federal judge eventually may agree that Goodell was impartial, there definitely is a good-faith basis for making the assertion that he wasn?t.? The league?s justifiable objective of ?maintaining the integrity of, and public confidence in, the game of professional football? requires among other things a public relations strategy that pulls the public?s strings in a way that causes them to have confidence in the game of professional football.

So in cases where the Commissioner serves as the face of the effort to ensure public confidence in response to the league?s pre-appeal belief that the players were involved in a bounty program, it necessarily becomes harder to the Commissioner to serve as a truly impartial arbitrator.? If he changes his mind, the prior statements regarding his unequivocal belief that the players are guilty would have to be massaged and rectified and explained.

And if Goodell can?t pull that off without coming off as a flip-flopping politician or the ultimate leader of an investigation that turned out to be deeply flawed, public confidence in the game of professional football could be significantly shaken.

The procedure to which the parties agreed in the CBA gives Goodell a way to juggle situations in which his P.R. and/or investigative duties possibly have cemented his position as to player guilt.? Under Article 46, Section 2(a) of the CBA, the Commissioner appoints ?one or more designees? to serve as hearing officers.? And so, in a case like this one, he could have (and the NFLPA will argue that he should have) handed the baton to someone who had no role in the investigation or in the effort to ensure that the league could disclose its belief that the Saints maintained a pay-for-performance/bounty system without shaking public confidence in the game.

The fact that Goodell was personally involved in the investigation (Mike Ornstein told PFT last month that he personally met with Goodell as part of the probe) potentially strengthens the argument that Goodell should have appointed someone who was more likely to come to the appeal process untainted by, for example, the mountain of evidence that was never introduced at the June 18 hearing by the league.? As the NFLPA will surely contend, how can anyone forget everything they learned during the investigation and focus only on the presentation from former prosecutor Mary Jo White as the sole record of evidence on which the appeals would be decided?

And so, while the NFLPA has agreed to a procedure that allows the Commissioner to resolve appeals involving cases of conduct detrimental to the game, federal law entitles all players to a truly impartial arbitrator ? not an arbitrator who, consciously or not, feels compelled to defend the statements he has made and/or the investigation over which he has presided.

Put simply, the NFL wants an in-house appeal process that allows the league to treat as the top priority ?maintaining the integrity of, and public confidence in, the game of professional football.?? The Federal Arbitration Act contemplates a process that provides fairness to those who have something tangible to lose as a result of an eventual arbitration ruling.? Even if the NFLPA agreed to the current process, a process that fundamentally is unfair to and/or biased against one side should not survive judicial scrutiny.

In the end, that?s the issue the court system faces.? The NFLPA will claim that Goodell wasn?t impartial, Goodell will claim that he was, and a federal judge will have to break the tie.

Tweak your Muscle Building Process | Exercises ... - Astone Fitness

By: Fitness Dame

Having a hard time building that glorious muscular body you?re after? If you?re working hard but not getting results you may just need a few tweaks.

Follow these ?tweak tips? and you can gain 10lbs of muscle within a couple of months!

Work Muscle Groups

The human body naturally uses several muscles at once to perform everyday tasks (IE lifting a box). Therefore, it is now believed that exercises that work entire muscle groups rather than the traditional isolated muscle are better for you. Studies have shown that it also builds muscle faster. A suspension gym is a great tool for total body workouts. You are constantly having to keep your balance, so your core and stabilizer muscles are engaged no matter what exercise you are doing.

Some Muscle-Group Exercises include: dips, deadlifts, farmer?s walks, kettlebell swings, military presses, and pull-ups.

When weight lifting, use a weight that you can get through your whole set but have difficulty on the last rep. Increase the weight when you can do every rep of each set without trouble.

Train Hard but Learn to Chill

Though you may think that it makes sense to work out everyday in order to gain serious muscle, it may actually have a counter-effect. Working out breaks down your muscles. You actually build (or rebuild) muscle while you are resting. Make sure to take a day off after every 1 or 2 workouts and to get enough sleep.

The half hour to an hour immediately after your workout is prime time to feed your body the nutrients it needs for muscle growth and recovery. Choose the right foods and supplements to maximize your results. Here are our suggestions below:

Eat Your Protein!

Protein is made up of amino acids, which are the main building blocks of muscle. Make sure to eat about 28 grams (or about the size of your fist) of protein at every meal, and especially after a workout.

For a quick fix a protein shake is a great alternative to meat, eggs, nuts, etc. Research shows that whey protein is?the best for building muscle.

Don?t forget about the Carbs and Fats

Though protein plays a key role in the muscle building process, carbs and fats are just as important, so don?t neglect them. I?m talking HEALTHY carbs and fats! Stick with fruits and veggies and healthy fats like avocados, nuts, and fatty fish.

Not eating enough carbs will cause your body to breakdown and burn muscle for energy. Which will cause you to lose muscle!

Healthy fats will go a long way in helping produce energy for your intense workouts, and also helps produce testosterone, which is a muscle-building hormone.

Water

Remember that 70-to-80% of your muscles are made up of water so stay well hydrated.?Drinking water can actually make your muscles look fuller and helps you work out with more intensity.

FISH OIL/OMEGA 3

Fish oil is great for a healthy heart and brain, but it has also been found to help gain muscle and burn fat. Try odorless fish oils or ones that are flavored (IE lemon) to avoid fishy after taste. Stick to brands that have a higher EPA/DHA levels like ones that contain Omega 3.? Benefits of Omega 3 are: reduced Inflammation, reduced soreness from training, lowers cholesterol, prevents cancer, heart disease and depression.

CREATINE

Naturally found in the body, creatine gives you added strength and short bursts of energy to help you get the most out of your workout. In addition, creatine draws water into your muscles, which makes them swell (with water) causing them to look larger almost immediately.

Make sure you buy pure creatine monohydrate, as some creatine powders have been known to be mixed with some harmful chemicals. For best results start with taking about 10-20 grams a day for up to a week and then back off to about 5g a day.

Remember to drink plenty of water while on creatine as it has been known to cause dehydration.

L-GLUTAMINE

L-glutamine is an amino-acid that is very important to intestinal health and the immune system. L-glutamine triggers human growth hormone production and therefore helps speed the healing process of muscles. It also decreases fatigue and helps burn fat.

BRANCHED-CHAIN AMINO ACIDS

Isoleucine, leucine and valine are branched-chain amino acids or BCAA?s.? They make up 35% of the amino-acids in muscle tissue. BCAA?s are susceptible to being burned for energy while training, therefore it is important to replace them in order to allow muscles to grow. Branched chain amino-acids give you more energy, decrease muscle soreness, quicken the recovery process and stops muscles from breaking down.

?

Remember that supplements are meant as a ?help-hand? to your muscle building process. You will not get anywhere if you don?t have proper nutrition, rest, and TRAIN HARD!

Press Release: America's Farmers Fight Monsanto | Farm to Table

America?s Farmers FightMonsanto?s Scorched Earth Legal Campaign of Threats and Intimidation

Farmers and Organizations File Brief in Appellate Court Today

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? July 5, 2012 ? Seventy-five family farmers, seed businesses, and agricultural organizations representing over 300,000 individuals and 4,500 farms filed a?brief?today with the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C.,?asking the appellate court to reverse a lower court?s decision from February dismissing their protective legal action against agricultural giant Monsanto?s patents on genetically engineered seed.

The plaintiffs brought the pre-emptive case against Monsanto in March 2011 in the Southern District of New York and specifically seek to defend themselves from nearly two dozen of Monsanto?s most aggressively asserted patents on GMO seed. They were forced to act pre-emptively to protect themselves from Monsanto?s abusive lawsuits, fearing that if GMO seed contaminates their property despite their efforts to prevent such contamination, Monsanto will sue them for patent infringement.

?It?s time to end Monsanto?s scorched earth legal campaign of threats and intimidation against America?s farmers. Family farmers should be protected by the courts against the unwanted genetic contamination of their crops,? said Dave Murphy, founder and executive director of?Food Democracy Now!, a grassroots community of more than 300,000 farmers and citizens dedicated to reforming food and agriculture, that is co-plaintiff in the suit.

In an attempt to sidestep the challenge, Monsanto moved to have the case dismissed, saying that the plaintiffs? concerns were unrealistic. In February 2012, the district court took Monsanto?s side and dismissed the case, ridiculing the farmers in the process. Despite the fact that the plaintiffs are at risk for being contaminated by genetically modified seed and then sued for patent infringement by Monsanto, Judge Naomi Buchwald of the Southern District of New York dismissed the case because she didn?t find a case worthy of adjudication, saying ?it is clear that?these circumstances do not amount to a substantial controversy and that there has been no injury traceable to defendants.?

Every year Monsanto investigates over 500 farmers for patent infringement with their now notorious ?seed police.? To date, 144 farmers have had lawsuits brought against them by Monsanto without a binding contract with the multinational corporation, while another 700 farmers have been forced to settle out of court for undisclosed sums.

?Monsanto is known for bullying farmers by making baseless accusations of patent infringement,? said attorney Dan Ravicher of the not-for-profit legal services organization Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT), which represents the plaintiffs in the suit against Monsanto known as?Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association et al. v Monsanto. ?They?ve sued and harassed many other farmers who wanted nothing to do with their genetically modified seed and now that organic and conventional farmers are fighting back, they claim they would never do such a thing without backing up their words with an enforceable promise.?

Nature has determined that seed and pollen can drift great distances, in some cases as far as 10-15 miles, increasing the likelihood of contamination of organic crops with genetics from Monsanto?s laboratories. These seeds and crops are referred to as ?transgenic,??and have?had DNA of foreign organisms inserted into?their DNA through human engineered processes. Plaintiffs use and sell non?-transgenic seed, more commonly referred to as heirloom, organic, or conventional seed.

?We have a right to farm the way we choose,? said Maine organic seed?farmer Jim Gerritsen, President of lead plaintiff?Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association?(OSGATA). ?Yet Monsanto is unwilling to control their GMO pollution and they refuse to sign a binding covenant not-to-sue our family farmers for patent infringement should their seed?contaminate our crops. Monsanto?s publicized ?Commitment? promising that they would not sue farmers was described by Monsanto?s own lawyers as being ?vague.? We will continue to pursue our right to farm, and the right of our customers to have access to good clean food and seed.?

Some?plaintiffs have simply stopped growing certain types of crops due to the threat of contamination. Bryce Stephens, a certified organic farmer from northwest Kansas and OSGATA Vice-President, had to give up trying to grow organic corn and soy once his neighbors started using Monsanto?s genetically modified seed because it could easily spread onto his property and contaminate his organic crops, which would put him at risk of being sued for patent infringement by Monsanto.

In the brief filed today, the plaintiffs point out numerous errors in the district court decision that warrant reversal.

Murphy went on to state, ?No company should be allowed to violate the property rights of America?s farmers or threaten their livelihoods through the use of frivolous patent infringement lawsuits designed to control farmers and the food supply, while protecting Monsanto?s flawed seed technology and corporate profits.?
