FILE- This Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, file photo, shows News Corp.'s headquarters in New York. Under pressure to limit contagion from the British phone hacking scandal, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. confirmed Tuesday, June 26, 2012, that it is considering splitting into two publicly traded companies. The Wall Street Journal, News Corp.'s flagship newspaper, reported late Monday that the company is considering the separation of the newspaper and book publishing businesses from the entertainment arm, which includes Fox News Channel, broadcast TV network and 20th Century Fox movie studio. The media conglomerate did not specify Tuesday which businesses each company would contain. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)

(AP) ? Calling it the next logical step in a near six-decade evolution, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. said Thursday that it plans to split into two separate publicly traded companies.

Under the proposal, one company will operate as a newspaper and book publisher, while the other will be an entertainment company that includes the 20th Century Fox movie studio, the Fox broadcast TV network and the Fox News channel. It may take a year to work out the details.

The Murdoch family, which controls nearly 40 percent of the voting shares in News Corp., is expected to maintain control of both companies.

Rupert Murdoch said in a conference call with investors that a split would result in two strong companies that have more operational flexibility and be poised for greater growth.

"We've come a long way in our journey that began nearly 60 years ago with a single newspaper operating out of Adelaide," Murdoch said, referring to the single Australian newspaper he inherited from his father and became the foundation for News Corp.

"Each of these new companies would have the potential to continue that journey and prosper as an independent entity long into the future."

The split of News Corp. is a symbolic turning point for its 81-year-old media mogul. Through the years, Murdoch maintained a fondness for newspapers even as he purchased entertainment companies. In hearings last summer before U.K. lawmakers, he conceded that he regularly called newspaper editors under his employ with the greeting: "What's doing?"

Investors have already given their blessing to the split, having pushed shares of the company's Class B stock up 10 percent since the news of the plan broke early Tuesday. The shares edged down 15 cents to $22.26 in midday trading Thursday.

Under the current proposal, News Corp. shareholders will receive one share of common stock in the new company for each share of News Corp. that they currently hold. Each company would maintain two classes of stock.

Murdoch will serve as chairman of both companies and CEO of the media and entertainment company. The company said it plans to put together management teams and boards for both businesses over the next several months.

While News Corp.'s board unanimously approved pursuing a split, it will still need to approve any formal proposal. The deal is also subject to shareholder and numerous regulatory approvals.

News Corp. said it plans to hold a meeting of its shareholders sometime in 2013 and expects the deal to be completed in about a year.

Analysts relished the prospect that the faster growing pay TV segment would be valued more highly by new investors who weren't willing to buy shares in a company being dragged down by a newspaper industry in decline.

The publishing company, which will include The Wall Street Journal, is expected to be the much smaller of the two, with some analysts valuing it at about $5 billion, compared with the current market value for News Corp. as a whole of about $54 billion.

Murdoch emphasized on the call that the split doesn't mean that he's giving up on his publishing business, noting its "very strong" balance sheet and "robust" net cash position.

"The opportunity is so big, a single-minded pursuit is the best approach," Murdoch said. "Our aim is nothing less than this to create the most ambitious well-capitalized and highly motivated news and publishing company in the world."

Still, many analysts had questions about which entity would bear the financial risks of the ongoing U.K. probe into phone hacking and bribery. Besides legal costs, News Corp. also faces potential fines in the U.S. under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which punishes companies that have bribed officials abroad.

Breaking off the newspaper and book publishing assets into a separate company makes them more "bite size" and ripe for being taken private by a third party, according to Needham & Co. analyst Laura Martin.

It is unclear if the split will appease the British telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, which is reviewing whether British Sky Broadcasting ? of which News Corp. holds a 39 percent stake ? is "fit and proper" to hold a broadcasting license. Ofcom is expected to wrap up its review later this summer.

British authorities have been probing allegations that News Corp. journalists at its now-shuttered News of the World and other papers hacked into phones and bribed public officials to gain exclusive information.

Douglas C. Wallace, PhD, a pioneering genetics researcher who founded the field of mitochondrial genetics in humans, will receive the 2012 Genetics Prize of The Gruber Foundation. Wallace is being honored with this prestigious international award for his groundbreaking achievements in helping science understand the role of mitochondriathe "power plants" of cellsin the development of disease and as markers for human evolution.

He will receive the award November 9 in San Francisco at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics, where he will also deliver a lecture titled "A Bioenergetic Perspective on Origins, Health, and Disease".

"Douglas Wallace's contributions to our understanding of mitochondrial genetics have changed the way human and medical geneticists think about the role of mitochondria in human health and disease," said Elizabeth Blackburn, chair of the Selection Advisory Board to the Prize. Blackburn is the 2006 Gruber Genetics Prize laureate and shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine.

Wallace began his research on mitochondrial biology 40 years ago, at a time when few people thought the study of mitochondria and its DNA (mtDNA) would have any significant applications for clinical medicine. In the early 1970s, Wallace and associates demonstrated that the mtDNA coded for heritable traits by developing the cybrid transfer technique and showing that chloramphenicol resistance was cytoplasmically inherited. This system permitted them to delineate the characteristics of cytoplasmic genetics. Then in the late 1970s, Wallace demonstrated that the human mtDNA is inherited solely through the mother. Using maternal inheritance as a guide, Wallace identified the first inherited mtDNA disease, Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), and subsequently linked mtDNA mutations to a wide range of clinical symptoms, including deafness, neuropsychiatric disorders, cardiac and muscle problems, and metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Wallace also showed that mtDNA mutations accumulate in human tissue with age, and thus may play a role in age-related diseases, such as heart disease and cancer. In addition, he found that the levels of these age-related mtDNA mutations are higher in the brains of people with certain neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease and Huntington disease.

Wallace's research has also made a major contribution to the field of molecular anthropology. Using mtDNA variation, he has reconstructed the origins and ancient migrations of women, tracing all mtDNA lineages back some 200,000 years to a single African originthe so-called mitochondrial Eve.

"The impact of Doug Wallace's visionary research has been remarkable," said Huda Zoghbi, a member of Selection Advisory Board and the 2011 laureate of the Gruber Neuroscience Prize. "His discovery of the first mtDNA mutations in humans opened up the field of mitochondrial genetics and demonstrated the role of mitochondria in many human diseases. It's an extraordinary legacyand he is richly deserving of this award."

If you are young, gay and Internet-savvy (as most young gay men are these days), then you have probably heard of his show since the first three episodes are already out. If you are not any of those things, you should still check out the show.

Once the gay blogs (Out.com, Queerty, Towleroad, etc.) caught on to "The Outs," the show took on "a life of its own," according to Goldman, with viewers begging for more. The most interesting thing about the show, aside from its surprisingly high production value and its well-written dialogue, is that "The Outs" is an independently produced Web series that's making a sizable impact on a generation of viewers who are watching more and more of their entertainment online.

This six-episode dramatic Web series is funded entirely by successful Kickstarter campaigns and out-of-pocket expenses from the 26-year-old Bard College graduate and the creative team he assembled. "The Outs" tells the story of a couple of recent exes in New York and a good friend of theirs. The exes just so happen to be gay men.

Goldman explained the void he aimed to fill when he created the show. "I asked people, 'What's your favorite TV show about gay people?' Or 'name me a TV show [exclusively] about gay people,' " Goldman recalled. "Nobody really has an answer, and I think that's just sad."

Goldman noted that while TV has become more LGBT-friendly in the last few years, with a handful of excellent gay characters on "Modern Family," "Glee," "Smash," "True Blood," "American Horror Story" and more, none of these shows is centered around a gay story line.

"I think that what we've seen from the moment we started the project is a desire for it, and there's an audience for it," Goldman shared. "We just want to prove that there's space in media for stories like this. It's a story about people who happen to be gay, and we're super-proud and pleased to appeal to a gay audience."

As far as being on the edge of the online entertainment frontier, Goldman described his stance on the exciting position: "We're just trying to stretch the definition of what a Web series can be, so we're trying to shoot it as a TV show that happens to be online." As HD camera technology continues to improve and the costs of the equipment drop, piecing together a quality show is not the impossible dream that it was only several years ago, though the process is not easy to fund alone.

With the viewer base growing rapidly, Goldman and his team just surpassed their latest Kickstarter goal in just 48 hours. That puts the team ahead of its budget for the production of the show's upcoming fourth episode. Now is the time to keep an eye on Goldman and independent producers like him who are leading the new "TV on the Internet" movement. And if you haven't already, check out "The Outs" at www.theouts.tv.

Buying a home | Retirement | Focus on Home Size | Fifty Plus Housing

Don't get a house beyond your means and threaten your retirementWe?ve all heard that the McMansion trend is part of what sent the real estate market spiraling downward ? consumers wanted the biggest house on the block, even if meant it?d put them in debt up to their eyeballs. Even worse, it extravagant housing could threaten their retirement later life financial goals.

Finance writer for the Equifax Finance blog, Miranda Marquit, suggests buyers ask themselves the two questions before buying a home, in her post ?How Big of a House Do You Need?? Careful thought into the answers to these questions can help buyers avoid getting trapped into buying a bigger house than they need or can afford. It can also help you understand how much of a home you need when you retire.

In considering how large your home should be, think about your family?s preferences. Do you spend a lot of time together? Then you should focus on a larger common space relative to bedroom space. Do you have a lot of out of town guests? Then you really may need an extra bedroom. Do you need a quiet space/home office to get work done? Could the office/guest room be one room? Downsizing is a big deal for retirees but many families are taking great delight in their smaller homes, as their family spends more time together, and they save money not only on the home price, but on property taxes, maintenance, utilities, etc.

When considering how much of a house payment you can afford, really think about your monthly budget and how much you are comfortable with spending each month. You don?t want to live paycheck to paycheck or stress out month after month about making ends meet just so you can live in a big house. Remember that the cost of owning a home isn?t just the home price, it?s higher taxes, maintenance costs, utilities, HOA fees, etc. And if all of your money is going toward a big house, that doesn?t leave you with the money to do the things you enjoy or to set aside extra for saving money. This leads to the other big consideration ? the WHAT IF ? what if you or your spouse lose your job, your hours get cut, you?re forced to take a pay cut, etc. Can you keep up the payments and still enjoy your later years?

Tim Profeta: The Climate Post: Rio 20 Pushes on With Weak Text, Mixed Predictions

Delegates from around the world are meeting in Rio de Janeiro to discuss how to make the planet more sustainable, despite a rapidly growing population. The reprise of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit dubbed "Rio+20" has so far drawn mixed reactions: some call it an "opportunity"; others say it is another step on a long, complicated road to realizing a more sustainable society. William K. Reilly, former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator and chairman of the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions Board of Advisors chose to reflect on then and now, noting the two decades since leaders first met in Rio the "concept of sustainable development has evolved from theory to increasingly common practice." BBC News illustrates just how much the world has changed since the first Earth Summit.

Late Monday night, negotiators did agree on a draft framework for sustainable development goals. The text is not expected to change much when heads of state convene to discuss it, according to U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change Todd Stern.

As the Washington Post reported, many of the concrete steps needed to move toward a more sustainable future are already being take on by major cities regardless of the outcome at Rio+20. The efforts of these 58 cities will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 248 million tons in 2020. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hopes energy has a big role and introduced the "Sustainable Energy for All Plan" in Rio, which would end energy poverty by 2030.

Despite what's happening in Rio, a new poll indicates many Americans believe there's been an environmental decline in the last 10 years and they are attributing it to human activity.

Japan Sets Sights on Solar Future

As it shifts from nuclear power following the Fukushima radiation disaster, Japan is positioning itself to become the second largest market for solar power. The country introduced incentives for renewable energy that could expand revenue in this area to more than $30 billion by 2016. In the U.K., energy from renewable sources accounted for roughly 12.4 percent of the European Union's overall consumption, with Estonia recording the largest increase between 2006 and 2010.

Germany, who also opted to move away from nuclear by 2022, is feeling the burden of its decision. Miranda Schreurs, director of the Environmental Policy Research Center at Berlin Free University, said, "The way for Germany to compete in the long run is to become the most energy-efficient and resource-efficient market, and to expand on an export market in the process." If Germany succeeds, Technology Review reported, it could provide a workable blueprint for other industrialized nations.

A new report by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory finds the prospects for renewable energy, at least in the U.S., to be promising -- concluding it could supply 80 percent of the country's electricity by 2050.

Moratorium Mulled after Defeat of NC Sea Level Rise Bill

The North Carolina House of Representatives this week rejected a Senate bill that would have prohibited policy makers from using projections of accelerated sea level rise for coastal development planning purposes. This may lead lawmakers to enact a moratorium on such predictions pending further study by the state, which could take years. NewScientist breaks down the evidence of sea level rise in the state.

The EPA has turned down a demand by U.S. environmental groups to issue new regulations on greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft, ships and off-road vehicles, saying it "does not have the resources to consider all possible sources of climate change in the near or medium term." Meanwhile, the Senate on Wednesday defeated a proposed measure that would have overturned EPA's Mercury and Air Toxics Standard, or MATS, a rule aimed at limiting emissions of mercury, arsenic and other toxic air pollutants from coal-fired power plants. It will be the first federal standard to regulate toxic emissions from these plants, and is projected to result in coincident greenhouse gas reductions. A recent poll suggests most Americans favor the rule -- provided that companies are given enough time to comply.

Public companies in the UK -- some 1,600 in all -- may soon have to divulge all details about the greenhouse gases they emit, according to the Guardian. More companies may face the requirement, beginning as early as April 2013, after the policy is reviewed in 2015.

The Climate Post offers a rundown of the week in climate and energy news. It is produced each Thursday by Duke University's Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions.
