Anish Shaikh's TechFactor: Security for Small Business -in Points

1) No security plan is foolproof.?Comforting, isn't it? But it's true--there is no such thing as 100% secure, and I've yet to an encounter a security pro that would argue otherwise. (Some governments in the Middle East would likely agree now, too.) That's not an excuse to do nothing. When online crooks target SMBs, either via targeted attacks or indiscriminate malware, they usually do so for two reasons: SMBs have more money than the average individual, and they have less security in place than large enterprises. That can make them easy, profitable targets. The SMB's job: don't be an easy mark. Practice?good basic security?at bare minimum. If time and?money?are key challenges, consider a?risk-management approach--more on that below in number five. 2) You might not know it if you're infected.?Flame's just now?coming to light, but it has existed since 2010--and possibly as far back as 2007. Even if you've got strong security controls in place, you might not necessarily know if you've been infected by malware or other means. "Most malware is written to be very stealth and not let you know that it's on the machine, so what Flame does is very typical," Haley said. Robust, current security technology is a good first step toward minimizing the chance of undetected breaches--the straightforward anti-virus programs of yore aren't likely to cut it. Haley also advises SMBs take steps to eliminate spam in their corporate email accounts; the bane of inboxes continues to be a favorite delivery method for malware makers. Expect social media to continue to grow as a malware vector, too. Haley thinks SMBs need to be thinking about social risk and actively monitoring their accounts for unusual activity. 3) Attacks are increasingly sophisticated.?The?complexity?of today's security threats almost make you long for the good old days of the?Wazzu virus. Flame appears to have reset the bar. For SMBs, it's a reminder that a set-it-and-forget security plan is a recipe for failure. What worked in 2010 probably won't pass muster in 2012. "You really need to review everything [periodically]," Haley said. That's important even if you outsource security to a consultant or other vendor. If time is an issue, an annual review is better than none at all. Depending on how much a particular company invests in security--or doesn't--it might want to consider more frequent checks on its technologies and processes to ensure it's keeping up with the times.

4) Reputation harm can be expensive.?The fallout from the Flame revelation is just getting started, but it's safe to say this is a public embarrassment for the affected governments. For SMBs, it's a reminder that security breaches don't necessarily need to hit your bank account to be costly. A website that gets co-opted into a malware host, for example--they're at an all-time high, according Symantec's most recent annual security report--could have a difficult time earning back the trust of its customers and other visitors. Likewise, data theft can be both embarrassing and expensive.

"It's bad enough if you get your money or your customer list or some sort of intellectual property stolen," Haley said. "But also the damage of the publicity from it could be really crippling to a business. Some people may be reluctant to do business with you if they think that you can't keep your information secure."

5) Prioritize your most important assets.?A sound strategy for some SMBs is simply to not try to protect everything. Rather, identify your most valuable assets--banking credentials and other financial information, customer databases, and intellectual property, to name a few examples--and focus your efforts there. That can help resource-strapped organizations minimize their vulnerabilities in a practical manner rather than waving a white flag of surrender.

Technology to keep you fit | Life And Leisure NJ

As Americans? appetites for new gadgets grow, so do our waste lines. But what if your iPad or smartphone or even your gaming system could help you get in shape and stay there? While your smartphone can?t double as a dumbbell, all that technology you?re lugging around actually can help get and keep you fit.

If you?re always on the go, start measuring just how far you are going with a pedometer application for your smartphone. And kick it up a notch with one that will post your results to your Facebook page. ?Not only does it track you, but it let?s all your friends know if you?re slacking,? says Shannan Wheaton, academic director for Graphic Design and Web Design & Interactive Media at The Art Institute of Ohio ? Cincinnati. You can take your workout to the next level with race training apps that will help to pace you, maximize your potential and get you ready for your first 5K or fifth marathon.

If you?re always eating out or want to know just how much of a caloric punch that a gallon of ice cream really packs, there are plenty of apps that will help you count your calories. You can choose from thousands of restaurant menus stored on the app or choose your favorite supermarket foods. The apps will even help you calculate how many calories per day you should consume based on your current height, weight and goals. Those apps also allow you to track the calories you burn during exercise and take that into account when giving you a daily calorie allotment.

And if you can?t be bothered to type in your food selection, Ted Long, academic director of Web Design & Interactive Media, Digital Filmmaking & Video Production and Visual Effects & Motion Graphics at The Illinois Institute of Art ? Schaumburg has a solution. ?Mealsnap lets you take a picture of the food you?re about to consume and gives you the calorie count by comparing your image to the images it has stored in its database,? he says.

Once you get home and start charging your phone, you may want to unwind with your Xbox, Wii or Playstation. Good thing all three systems have interactive workouts that could have you doing crunches, boxing against a virtual opponent or dancing the pounds off. ?Any activity you can do outside, like cross country skiing or baseball, you can do with these gaming systems,? says Li Harmon academic director of Game Art & Design, Media Arts & Animation and Visual Effects & Motion Graphics at The Art Institute of Las Vegas. Harmon adds that some of these games even make you feel guilty if you haven?t done your virtual workout in a while.

If you?re always heading out of town on business and don?t want to sweat it out at the hotel gym, take your virtual yoga instructor with you. Long says there?s a yoga app that comes with HD video so you can see each of your instructor?s positions more clearly.

Wheaton says there?s more of that kind of workout coming in the future. ?We?re heading toward a video world and we?re going to see more virtual personal trainers in the future.?

Just how effective will all these technologies be in the long run? Wheaton, Long and Harmon all agree, that just like a gym membership, you have to use it to get results.

Baseball team owner won't dodge tax bill after divorce

Minnesota residents often associate summer with three things: mosquitoes, going "up north" and baseball. Though excitement usually gathers as the baseball season heats up, one former team owner is not exactly celebrating as federal authorities are looking to investigate his family's finances.

Frank McCourt, former owner of the Dodgers, and his wife have been going through a very public divorce and financial scandal, which will likely resulted in a prolonged round of complex asset division. Since filing for personal bankruptcy and relinquishing ownership of the baseball team, it was revealed that the McCourt and his family used revenue from the team to finance their personal expenses, without reporting any of that money as income. Not only does this raise ethical issues for the couple, but it also raises serious legal questions.

According to divorce documents, Frank McCourt indicated he would take responsibility for any unpaid tax liabilities. This may become an issue for the former business owner, especially since he and his family used over $180 million of the baseball club's money to finance a lavish lifestyle. Since the McCourts didn't pay federal or state taxes between 2004 and 2009, and failed to report the team's funds as income, it looks as though he will have an incredibly large tax bill to settle with the Internal Revenue Service.

While most ever Minnesota couple or business owner going through divorce is not facing a federal investigation for tax fraud and evasion, this case reveals aspects of asset division that are worth noting. Not only are a couple's martial assets included in the division process, but so are their liabilities. Outstanding loans or tax bills are subject to being included in a divorce settlement, making one or both spouses responsible for payments.

Knowing that an individual could be potentially responsible for paying back debt acquired during the course of a marriage. In order to make sure assets and liabilities are fairly split between spouses, it is important to try to work together toward an equitable settlement. Having a trustworthy legal advocate at your side during a divorce will not only ensure that your interests are fairly represented, but it can also help streamline the process.

Home School Education - Advantages and Disadvantages | Right ...

Why Parents Choose a Home School Education

An increasing number of children today are receiving a home school education. The reasons for making the choice to home school their kids varies from family to family but there are three main reasons why parents are removing their children from the public school system and giving them a home school education.

The first reason is that the public education system in the United States is struggling to provide a proper education for the nation?s children with out of date text books, run down school buildings and inadequate equipment. Provision of a home school education enables the parents to have control over the quality of the educational materials used by their children and the general conditions in which they are educated.

The second reason is that parents wish to assume more control over the influences their children will be exposed to. This is often on the basis of religious grounds but, very often, it is simply because a home school education will ensure the child learns the values upheld by the family and is taught from an early age what behavior is appropriate. Unfortunately, many public schools have a poor reputation for instilling good discipline in students. This often results in badly behaved children disrupting lessons and preventing their peers from getting the full benefit of classes. Discipline and the upholding of proper standards of behavior is an important part of a home school education.

The third reason many parents choose to give their children a home school education is fear for their safety. Violence is on the increase everywhere and the public school system has not escaped this trend. Violence in the public education system is getting worse and the individual acts of violence are more serious. Since the shocking events at Columbine High School there have been further tragedies involving firearms where teachers and students have been injured or killed. A home school education ensures the safety of children who would otherwise be seriously at risk of harm.

The Disadvantages of Opting For Homeschooling

Providing a home school education is not simply a matter of parental choice. In most cases the state education board of the state in which the family resides will have to approve a decision to give a child a home school education. The person taking on the responsibility of homeschooling must be certified to be a home teacher, the curriculum must follow the state curriculum, and the text books and other educational materials to be used must be approved by the state. Although this might seen like undue interference in what is a matter of personal choice, the state has a responsibility to ensure that all children receive an adequate standard of education and checks will be made to ensure that any child being kept away from public school is being properly educated.

A home school education might mean that a child is deprived of certain opportunities which would have been available within the public school system. There could be difficulties in providing facilities for athletic children to realize their potential. Musically talented children could be similarly disadvantaged. In some states there is provision for children receiving a home school education to take part in amenities such as being able to attend sports lessons and join after-school clubs. However, the level of assistance provided to homeschooling parents is not uniform and varies a lot from state to state.

The final potential disadvantage to affect children receiving a home school education is that they will not develop the social skills which will be important as they grow up. Social interaction with their peers and with adults outside the family is essential if a child is going to grow up with a properly balance personality and a reasonable level of social skills. These developmental issues can be fairly easily overcome if the child lives in a state where homeschooling parents are given support and the child receiving a home school education is accepted into classes and extra-curricular activities.

The decision to keep a child out of the public education system is not one any parent would make lightly and any weighing up of the pros and cons must take into account the level of support the state will provide. However, if the public school system continues to deteriorate, the number of children receiving a home school education is bound to increase.

SEC teams' penalties for drugs not created equally

In this Sunday, May 27, 2012, photo, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive appears during an NCAA college baseball game at the SEC tournament championship in Hoover, Ala. Football coaches from the powerhouse and recently expanded league were in unison, Tuesday, May 29, that they want a proposed four-team playoff to include the best teams in the country ? and not be tied to conference champions. Their solidarity comes as no surprise considering the league has won six consecutive Bowl Championship Series national titles, with the latest one coming when Alabama knocked off LSU after not winning its division or even reaching the league championship game. (AP) ? Players testing positive for marijuana in the mighty Southeastern Conference do not face the one-year suspension that comes from getting busted by the NCAA.

In the most successful league of the BCS-era, players routinely get third, fourth and even fifth chances before they're booted from the team; failed drug tests administered by the NCAA result in the automatic suspension.

The finding comes from an Associated Press examination of the drug policies at 11 current members of the SEC. Vanderbilt, a private institution, declined to make its rules available.

All the SEC schools the AP looked at had far more lenient drug policies than the NCAA, though the penalties varied widely.

The NCAA conducts its own drug checks and leaves testing policies to the schools, but the governing body released a report in January saying that more than a quarter of college football players admitted in 2009 that they smoked marijuana in the previous year.

Just how many suspensions for recreational drug use are handed down in the SEC or any NCAA-affiliated conference is unknown because privacy rules prohibit schools from disclosing positive tests. They're not even required to tell the NCAA.

However, several SEC standouts have been in the news recently.

Former Auburn running back Mike Dyer testified in an April court case involving a teammate that he consistently smoked synthetic marijuana during his Tigers career, LSU star Tyrann Mathieu was suspended one game for violating the team's drug policy last year and Georgia All-America safety Bacarri Rambo could miss a game or two next season for failing a drug test.

Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork, who was hired in March, is hoping to strengthen his school's policy by the middle of the summer. Currently, a second positive test at Mississippi might simply mean the loss of free tickets for family and/or community service.

A third positive requires suspension for three games or events. Subsequent violations call for three games tacked onto that, though the athletic director and head coach can dismiss the athlete or opt not to renew the scholarship.

"We need to tighten it up quite a bit and come up with a good policy for everyone involved," Bjork said.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said a conference-wide standard has been discussed at least twice during his 10-year tenure but that league members have opted against one to this point.

Drug testing was briefly discussed at the SEC meetings this week in Destin, Fla. Presidents and athletic directors agree action needs to be taken and say it will be a priority at their meetings in October once they have gathered more conference-wide data.

In the meantime, schools are left to handle situations.

"The issue is to make sure that our institutional drug testing programs are adequate," Slive said before the meetings. "This is something that comes up on a regular basis."

Athletes at Georgia and Auburn who test positive for marijuana a second time face the prospect of losing half their season to suspension.

Arkansas and Florida, by comparison, suspend athletes for 10 percent of a season for a second positive.

The NCAA said 90 percent of Division I schools have their own drug-testing programs, while the governing body tests some 13,500 athletes a year. Mary Wilfert, the NCAA's associate director of health and safety, said the NCAA's testing is focused more on performance-enhancing drugs.

"The NCAA is not in the position to provide intervention throughout the year, but schools are," Wilfert said. She said schools rely on their own needs and philosophies to set their drug testing policies, which are "complementary" to those of the NCAA.

Wilfert said Football Bowl Subdivision teams are tested at least once, sometimes twice a year by the NCAA.

The SEC schools' policies focus more on recreational drugs, with five of the 11 having stronger penalties for anything beyond marijuana.

Georgia, Kentucky and Mississippi State are the only ones with suspensions for athletes' first positive test for marijuana, 10 percent of the season for each. Kentucky includes possible dismissal for each of the first two positives, with a(half-season suspension for No. 2).

The policy variations continue beyond the first positive test.

Six of the schools have a three-strike-and-you're-out method. At Florida, you might get a fifth strike. At Arkansas, four. And Ole Miss doesn't have a defined number.

The use of recreational drugs is a growing concern around all of college football.

The NCAA report released in January found 26.7 percent of football players said they smoked marijuana in 2009 ? the latest year available ? 5 percentage points higher than in 2005.

Most SEC schools have had to deal with the problem.

Even the comparatively stiff penalties at Georgia haven't been completely effective as deterrents. The Bulldogs might open next football season without two defensive backs.

Bulldogs cornerback Branden Smith was charged with marijuana possession in March. Rambo failed a drug test after, his high school coach said, inadvertently eating marijuana-laced brownies on a spring break trip to Florida.

"If you look at other people's policies, ours is much tougher than just about anybody's policy I've seen," Georgia coach Mark Richt said in late March. "Because some people end up with a game suspension or whatever it may be, a kid at another school may do the same thing and their policy maybe doesn't say it has to be that way.

"I don't care what they do, all I'm saying is I think it's important how we handle it and our goal when our guys make mistakes is to find out the truth about it and then discipline it properly."

Dyer, a former Auburn back who has transferred to Arkansas State, took the stand in the trial of the first of four fellow members of the 2010 national championship team charged with armed robbery, allegedly committed after a night of using the drug.

All four were immediately dismissed from the team. Auburn has since updated its drug testing policy to specifically include synthetic marijuana, which was legally sold in Alabama stores until last October.

Florida athletes are suspended for 20 percent of a season for a third positive and 50 percent for a fourth. A fifth means dismissal.

In January, Florida defensive tackle Leon Orr became the sixth Gators player arrested on marijuana charges since head coach Will Muschamp's hiring after the 2010 season. All six cases ended with deferred prosecution.

The program created by Florida's University Athletic Association focuses on education, testing, treatment and deterrence, Gators spokesman Steve McClain said. Each Florida athlete faces one random test each semester while they're in school, anywhere from two to four times a year, McClain said.

The schools' coaches or administrators can often impose stricter penalties.

Alabama allows the athletic director, head coach and its Sports Medicine Committee to determine what, if any, penalty is warranted after a first positive test. The second means the athlete will be sidelined for 15 percent of the season and/or a suspension of up to 30 days, and the third a one-year ban from games.

One observer without ties to the SEC believes it's essential to have an outside organization to police the drug issue and establish uniform methods and policies.

Bob Copeland, athletic director for Canada's Waterloo University, compares the current system to having each country control its own testing for its Olympic athletes.

"There's a lot of value to having third-party experts," said Copeland, who ordered his entire football team tested after a player was arrested for possession and trafficking of anabolic steroids. "They can look at what's called intelligent testing and generally apply that across the nation."

Georgia held a mandatory meeting with every student-athlete before spring break addressing drugs. Athletic director Greg McGarity said a question was raised at a staff meeting this spring: "What else is there?"

"We've got 600 young men and women in our programs," McGarity said. "When someone steps outside the lines, then we have to self-evaluate. Is there more we could have done? But I think at the end of the day it comes down to more accountability for the student-athletes."
