Windows Phone Cake Contest: Bake a Cake, Win a Windows Phone

Redmond-based software giant Microsoft is not shy to boast about Windows Phone?s start screen. Microsoft?s Michael Stroh for example described the start screen as ?pretty sweet.? And speaking about things that are pretty sweet, Windows Phone fans shared pics of cakes that present the smartphone?s start screen via Windows Phone?s Facebook page.

And that got the Windows Phone team thinking ? why don?t we turn this into an opportunity to give away some stuff? So the Windows Phone team decided to run a competition that can be resumed in a just a few words: bake a cake that focuses on Windows Phone and you could win a Windows Phone.

The Windows Phone Team announced via its blog and via its Facebook page that if you create a Windows Phone-themed cake, take a pic of the aforementioned cake, then submit the pick on the Cake Contest Facebook page, you have the chance to win cool new Windows Phone (the team did not specify what model Windows phone).

Please note that you must be the one who baked the cake in the image; it doesn?t matter if it is an old image, it only matters that you baked it. You should also note that the all entries for the contest must be received by May 30th. The community will be asked to vote on these entries; the voting ends on June 6th. The three entrants that receive the most votes during this period will be rewarded with a new Windows Phone.

That?s right! Microsoft will give away three Windows Phones as part of the Windows Phone Cake Contest. The three most popular Windows Phone-themed cakes will be rewarded with a Windows Phone.

If you want to find out more about the rules of the Windows Phone Cake Contest, Microsoft posted them on SkyDrive here.

SixFigureStart Career Coaching Advice in Investor's Business Daily ...

I am excited to be quoted in Investor?s Business Daily sharing career coaching advice around communication skills. Some highlights:

? Stay on point. Rambling adds static to a good connection.

?Know your key message points and deliver them concisely,? SixFigureStart career coach Caroline Ceniza-Levine told IBD. When in doubt, the former recruiter says, speak less. ?Make your point efficiently and effectively.?

? Button down. ?You don?t want to be stiff, but in professional environments you?re expected to speak differently than when you?re with friends,? Ceniza-Levine said.

? Lighten up. A touch of humor helps speakers strike a brighter chord, Ceniza-Levine teaches.

?This doesn?t mean that you are not serious or that you need to take a course in stand-up comedy,? she said. ?I mean a lightness and detachment that demonstrate you are in control of the situation and not consumed by it.?

Controversial O.C. politician loses local GOP leadership post

PaulyDeborah Pauly, the outspoken Villa Park councilwoman who drew community ire when she protested outside an Islamic charity event, was removed this week from a leadership position with the Orange County Republican Party's central committee.

Party officials said Pauly, who is running for county supervisor, has been a divisive figure.

Her removal comes days after Orange businessman Bob Walters mailed letters on Pauly's behalf to voters on "George Wallace for President"? letterhead. The stationery appears to have been left over from Walters' stint as chairman? of Wallace's failed campaign for president in 1967.

The mailer urged citizens to vote for Pauly, who is in a heated race for a supervisor?s seat, and was the subject of a complaint to the state's Fair Political Practices Commission.

Pauly previously told the L.A. Times that she did not know of Walters? ties to the former governor, who was associated with segregation during his years in power.

The Villa Park councilwoman sparked outrage last year when she appeared outside a charity function. "I know quite a few Marines who will be very happy to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise," Pauly said at the time.

In 2010, Pauly was taken to task after writing on her Facebook page that applauding President Obama?s healthcare bill was ?like applauding a mugging or a rape.?

On Monday, Pauly was removed as first vice chair of the county's Republican Party on a motion by Scott Baugh, the chairman of the GOP.

Baugh said that Pauly is a divisive force in the party at a time when unity is needed. ?These are not just my opinions, they?ve been brought to me by dozens and dozens of people who share my concerns,? he said at the meeting.

?She makes statements out there that I?m constantly having to defend,? he said.

Pauly did not return a request for comment. Neither did Baugh.

At the meeting, which was videotaped, Pauly said that she is being criticized because she is not an ?establishment status-quo Republican.?

She blamed Baugh for attempting to taint her supervisorial campaign against Todd Spitzer, a former state assemblyman and supervisor.? ?You are being used as political pawns in a game,? she told committee members.

Emily Sanford, a longtime member of the party, said in a letter to the committee that over the years she has seen many officers come and go, but Pauly?s behavior stands out.

Pauly, Sanford wrote, seems to ?enjoy being unnecessarily provocative."

She said that Pauly's statements only make the Republican Party appear "insensitive."

A small group of protesters, including Donald Craig, the president of the Orange County chapter of the NAACP, spoke about the Wallace letterhead mailer at a Villa Park council meeting Tuesday night before being cut off by the city attorney.

Craig said Wednesday that Pauly has not done anything to separate herself from the Wallace flier.

?It hit a nerve with us,? he said. ?You can?t be in the middle with something like this.?

US poised to vet possible arms for Syrian rebels

FILE - In this Saturday, April 28, 2012 file photo, the ship "Lutfallah II" believed to be carrying three containers of weapons, is docked at a Lebanese navy base, in Beirut, Lebanon. Struggling to obtain weapons, Syria's rebels appear to be shifting tactics to smaller-scale guerrilla tactics like roadside bombs and hit-and-run attacks as the regime chokes off the main smuggling routes into the country. AP interviews with security officials, rebels and arms dealers in neighboring countries indicate that individual units of anti-regime fighters scrape by haphazardly for weapons, with almost no central organization and little means to get arms heavier than automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades into the country. (AP) ? As one diplomatic effort after another fails to end more than a year of brutal violence in Syria, the Obama administration is preparing a plan that would essentially give U.S. nods of approval to arms transfers from Arab nations to some Syrian opposition fighters.

The effort, U.S. officials told The Associated Press, would vet members of the Free Syrian Army and other groups to determine whether they are suitable recipients of munitions to fight the Assad government and to ensure that weapons don't wind up in the hands of al-Qaida-linked terrorists or other extremist groups such as Hezbollah that could target Israel.

The plan, which has not yet been finalized, reflects U.S. frustration that none of the previous efforts ? including diplomatic rhetoric from the United Nations and the multinational Friends of Syria group, and special envoy Kofi Annan's plan for a cease-fire ? has even begun to nudge President Bashar al-Assad from power. The vetting would be the first tiny step the U.S. has made toward ensuring that the Syrian opposition uses the weapons to fight Assad and not to turn it into a full sectarian conflict.

While some intelligence analysts worry that there may be no suitable recipients of lethal aid in the Syria conflict, the vetting plan has arisen as the least objectionable idea in a complicated situation.

U.S. officials, most of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, stressed that the United States, which is already providing non-lethal aid to Syria's political opposition, is not supplying military assistance to Assad's foes.

The administration's position remains that adding more weapons to the conflict is a bad idea and will only fan the fire of instability.

"We don't think that adding fuel to this fire is the right way to go," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

"Our decision is to support the civilian opposition in nonlethal ways," she said. "There are other countries who have made other decisions. That's their sovereign decision to make. We've made our decision."

But she added: "We are obviously consulting with various states about the decisions that we've made, that they've made."

Privately, officials say that as conditions continue to deteriorate, it would be irresponsible not to weigh in with Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and others such as Turkey that have indicated interest in arming the rebels.

By some accounts, those nations already have begun to ship weapons with tacit U.S. agreement. In Turkey, private businessmen have begun funneling weapons into Syria.

Libya's new rulers, fresh from their own revolution that toppled longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi, have pledged support for the Syrian rebels, but actually transferring weapons is tricky. Last month, Lebanese authorities seized a ship carrying rocket-propelled grenades and heavy-caliber ammunition, possibly bound for Syrian rebels.

The fighters' attempts to bring in heavier arms that could change the course of the 15-month-old uprising so far have been stymied at every turn, even by countries sympathetic to the revolt. All are wary of being drawn into the fight

The rebels have cast a wide net, contacting weapons dealers in Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Without some type of U.S. vetting as to who should receive such shipments, the Obama administration and some of its European allies fear that weapons might be used against Western interests.

While the "main" Syrian opposition is not aligned with al-Qaida, the chance that weapons might fall into the wrong hands in an unstable environment like Syria is "always a concern," said a senior intelligence official.

Al-Qaida has established a limited operational capability in Syria and is responsible for several attacks on Assad targets, the official said. He said analysts believe the goal is to "sow further chaos" and advance an extremist agenda.

The official would not comment on any military aid that might be given to the rebels by U.S. allies.

Yet he and others acknowledged the situation is growing more dire.

AP interviews with security officials, rebels and arms dealers in countries neighboring Syria indicate that individual rebel units have to scrounge for weapons. They have no central organization and no import routes for anything heavier than automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades.

It is into this mix that the U.S. may soon be inserting itself.

Washington's supplies of communications equipment and medical supplies to opposition members it has approved are already under way, Officials said that those supplies can now be easily augmented with weapons from other donors.

"Smuggling lines are smuggling lines. We use the same donkeys," said one, pointing out that the routes are essentially the same for bandages as they are for bullets.

Facebook shares stabilizing, but probes mount

(AP) ? Facebook's initial public offering is the subject of two congressional inquiries and mounting lawsuits as the social network enters its fifth day of public trading.

The shares regained some ground Wednesday, rising $1, or 3.2 percent, to close at $32. They were up another 50 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $32.50 in early premarket trading Thursday. But they are still more than 14 percent below their $38 per share IPO price last week.

The stock's rocky inaugural trading day last Friday was followed by a two-day decline.

The launch was held up by a half-hour delay, caused by glitches on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It was marred further this week as investors began accusing the banks that arranged the IPO of sharing important information about Facebook's business prospects with some clients and not others.

Several shareholders who bought stock in the IPO have filed lawsuits against Facebook, its executives and Morgan Stanley, the IPO's lead underwriter. At question is whether analysts at the big underwriter investment banks cut their second-quarter and full-year forecasts for Facebook just before the IPO, and told only a handful of clients about it.

One lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York, claims Facebook's IPO documents contained untrue statements and omitted important facts, such as a "severe reduction in revenue growth" that Facebook was experiencing at the time of the offering. The suit's three plaintiffs, who bought Facebook stock on its first day of trading May 18, claim they were damaged in the process.

Morgan Stanley declined to comment. Facebook said the lawsuit is without merit.

Another lawsuit, filed in San Mateo County Superior Court in California, claims Facebook and underwriters misled investors in Facebook's IPO documents. Both lawsuits seek class action status on behalf of investors who bought Facebook stock and lost money on Friday.

"No one gets it perfect, as far as saying what the financial results are," said Anthony Michael Sabino, professor at St. John's University's Peter J. Tobin College of Business. The bottom line, he added, is whether Facebook or the underwriter had material information about Facebook's finances that was not disclosed publicly.

"At this moment, it's still too early to say," Sabino said. "We don't know enough, but this could turn out to be an issue."

What is known is that, in March, Facebook began meeting with analysts at the underwriting firms. The gatherings are a customary part of the IPO process and are designed to help analysts understand the company's business so they can make accurate financial projections.

On May 9, the third day of Facebook's pre-IPO roadshow to meet with prospective investors, the company filed an amended IPO document that said its number of mobile users was growing faster than its revenue.

According to a person familiar with the matter, Facebook then had another meeting with analysts and told them that based on the new information in the filings, the analysts' forecasts should be at the low end of the range that the company gave them in April. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not publicly authorized to discuss the matter.

Adding to Wednesday's events, Facebook was in talks with the New York Stock Exchange to move its stock from the Nasdaq Stock Market after the botched offering, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The news of the talks was first reported by Reuters.

NYSE spokesman Rich Adamonis said: "There have been no discussions with Facebook regarding switching their listing in light of the events of the last week, nor do we think a discussion along those lines would be appropriate at this time."

A Nasdaq spokesman declined to comment.

Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, said late Wednesday that his panel wants to learn more about the social network's initial offering. The committee seeks briefings with Facebook representatives, regulatory agencies and others.

After the briefings, Johnson said, he will determine whether a hearing should be held.

Also gathering information about Facebook's IPO is the House Financial Services Committee. An aide to that panel said its staff is getting briefings.

The subject is likely to be raised in hearings by the committee in the coming weeks, even though no hearings are planned specifically on the Facebook IPO, the aide said. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because the House committee's planned inquiry hasn't been publicly announced.

Conversations with? GOSH Food founder Ange Randrianasolo ...

By Paola Bassanese

Q: When did your passion for healthy eating start?

?

A: I have always been passionate about food, but I guess the true healthy side of it started after my second pregnancy. Because I was over 35, I found it harder to get back into my normal shape and level of energy. At the same time while I was on maternity leave, I used to go to the playground after school everyday and I was a bit horrified to see that pupils? snacks were not looking very healthy.

So I started to question my own diet and began to read articles on food & health. I made a few changes but it was last October after a fitness and wellbeing retreat I attended when I read more about health and nutrition, sugar addiction and metabolic effect that I decided to change my family?s habits further more (and forever) because small changes were not working on the long term.

?

Q: Tell me a bit more about the GOSH food philosophy and when did you start your blog?

?

A: GOSH food is the illustration on my eating habits and lifestyle. That is why my posts will always talk about my life and my personal tips. Because I want my family to eat healthier, because I need to please all of them at the same time, because I can?t spend too much time in the kitchen as I am very busy and because I need to find additive-free ingredients? Gourmet Organic Simple Healthier food is the concept behind the name. It means that you can cook tasty, additive-free, simple things and feel healthier by doing so.

That said, GOSH food goes beyond eating habits, it is a whole concept. You need to involve your body (being active) and your mind (sleep well, fight stress, feel relaxed) as well.

According to some tests, my main problem was sugar, so I to gave it up (almost completely but I still eat natural sugar like fruit). I stopped eating the celebration cookies, cakes and doughnuts at work, I started to have vegetables for snacks (as well as my partner and my children) and surprisingly I started to feel more energized, fitter, better. Then people around me (family, friends and colleagues) were asking a lot of questions on my diet & lifestyle? and one day my partner told me ?why don?t you create a website?? and I thought ?why not??. That was in December 2011 during my Christmas holidays. It took me then till April this year to finalise everything and launch GOSH food concept blog, Facebook page and Twitter.

?

?

Q: How important is fitness in your routine and how often do you train?

?

A: As I said according to GOSH Food philosophy ?wellbeing is a wild territory? so it goes beyond your diet. But ultimately you can?t feel good if you don?t feed yourself properly. You can?t have tons of sugary cakes just because you exercise.

I wish I could train more. Time is a real issue for me as I am busy all the time. Nevertheless fitness is unconditional; it helps me to stay alert, energized, fit, and also to feel better and happier. I attend outdoor classes twice a week (British Military fitness), I try to do weights workouts at home (20 min) once a week as well and I do long runs once or twice a week as I am currently training for my 2nd marathon. I sometimes go to the swimming pool with the kids and try to walk as much as I can at the weekend. I regularly register to race events because it is a good motivation for going out running.

Note that running is more than fitness for me as I can be depressed sometimes; it helps me go through it. Running makes me feel happy.

Fitness is a family activity: my partner , my children and me we all swim, run, ski, play tennis (I am very bad actually at that one)?

?

?

Q: How important is massage in your day to day life?

A: For me massage has got 2 sides, it can be almost painful but for a great feeling afterwards or it can be relaxing for the same great feeling.

?

Massage is complementary to sport and wellbeing. I see massage as a great post workout stretching session. It helps to release these toxins out of my body and to fight muscle pain.

It helps to relax too, to release stress and to feel more beautiful (love the face massage and its lifting effect).

?

?

Q: What is your advice to parents to help their children like fruit and vegetables and steer them away from junk food?

?

A: Look at the ingredients when you buy food or drinks for your children and think: ?do I really want to feed them this??

No matter what, if your children are hungry they will eat what is available. Hence if no junk food sits in your fridge or kitchen cupboard they won?t get any.

The sooner you start to teach them good habits the easiest it will be.

Teaching takes time, don?t be impatient, healthy eating is an investment for their future.

Several books on healthy eating for children are available; it is always good to know why they should be eating this way and not the other so you can teach them the impact of good or bad food on their body and health. Children are smart, they like to learn, once it makes sense to them, they will find it easy to embrace healthy eating.

Fruit and vegetables taste really good when you eat additive-free food.

If you want your kids to eat well, start to eat well yourself. You are a model for them.

?
