Millions look skyward as eclipse crosses Asia, US

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Millions in Asia and the western United States watched as a rare "ring of fire" eclipse crossed their skies.

The annular eclipse, in which the moon passes in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges, was visible to wide areas across Asia early Monday. It then moved across the Pacific and was also seen in parts of the western United States Sunday afternoon.

Viewing parties were held in Reno, Nev., Oakland, Calif., and elsewhere. In some parts of the U.S., special camera filters for taking photographs have been sold out for weeks in anticipation of the big event.

People from Colorado, Oklahoma and as far away as Canada traveled to Albuquerque to enjoy one of the best vantage points.

Members of the crowd smiled and cheered and children yelled with excitement as the moon crossed the sun and the blazing halo of light began to form. Eventually, the moon centered and covered 96 percent of the sun.

"That's got to be the prettiest thing I've ever seen," said Brent Veltri of Salida, Colo.

Albuquerque city officials had urged residents to go to organized events or watch one of the many live webcasts to avoid damaging their eyes.

The eclipse cannot be viewed with the naked eye or even sunglasses. And solar glasses, which make the sun look like a huge orange disc, are a rare commodity in communities along the eclipse's path.

In Japan, "eclipse tours" were arranged at schools and parks, on pleasure boats and even private airplanes. Similar events were held in China and Taiwan as well, with skywatchers warned to protect their eyes.

The eclipse was broadcast live on TV in Tokyo, where such an eclipse hasn't been visible since 1839. Japanese TV crews watched from the top of Mount Fuji and even staked out a zoo south of Tokyo to capture the reaction of the chimpanzees ? who didn't seem to notice.

A light rain fell on Tokyo as the eclipse began, but the clouds thinned as it reached its peak, providing near perfect conditions.

"It was a very mysterious sight," said Kaori Sasaki, who joined a crowd in downtown Tokyo to watch event. "I've never seen anything like it."

At the Taipei Astronomical Museum in Taiwan, the spectacle emerged from dark clouds for only about 30 seconds. But the view was nearly perfect against Manila's orange skies.

"It's amazing. We do this for the awe (and) it has not disappointed. I am awed, literally floored," said astronomical hobbyist Garry Andreassen, whose long camera lenses were lined up with those of about 10 other gazers in a downtown Manila park.

Hong Kong skywatchers weren't so lucky.

Several hundred people gathered along the Kowloon waterfront on Hong Kong's famed Victoria Harbor, most of them students or commuters on their way to work. The eclipse was already underway as the sun began to rise, but heavy clouds obstructed the view.

The eclipse followed a narrow 8,500-mile path for 3 1/2 hours. The ring phenomenon lasted about five minutes, depending on location. People outside the narrow band for prime viewing saw a partial eclipse.

"Ring of Fire" eclipses are not as dramatic as a total eclipse, when the disk of the sun is entirely blocked by the moon. The moon is too far from Earth and appears too small in the sky to blot out the sun completely.

Doctors and education officials have warned of eye injuries from improper viewing. Before the event started, Japan's Education Minister Hirofumi Hirano demonstrated how to use eclipse glasses in a televised news conference.

Police also cautioned against traffic accidents ? warning drivers to keep their eyes on the road.

Quick verdict not likely as jury weighs Edwards' fate

After 17 days of testimony, much of it focusing on Edwards' secret affair with Rielle Hunter, jurors made requests for specific evidence and deliberated for about five hours Friday. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Stacey Klein, NBC News, and M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

Updated at 6:51 p.m. ET: A jury of eight men and four women began deliberations Friday in the trial of former Sen. John Edwards and retired for the weekend after signaling that it could be some time before they reach a verdict.

Chris Vaughn of NBC station WXII in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ben Thompson of NBC station WCNC in Charlotte, N.C., contributed to this report by Stacey Klein of NBC News and M. Alex Johnson of msnbc.com. Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

The racially diverse jury, which includes three members with finance-related jobs, is considering whether Edwards, the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee, "knowingly and willfully" violated a 1971 campaign finance law by orchestrating a scheme in which two wealthy donors provided almost $1 million to hide his pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter, while he sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2008.

Jurors got the case late Thursday afternoon and were sent home for the weekend Friday afternoon. Deliberations were scheduled to resume Monday at 9:30 a.m. ET in U.S. District Court in Greensboro, N.C.

Although hundreds of journalists from across the nation filled the square outside the courthouse and microphones were set up, Edwards didn't stop to talk to reporters as he returned to court for the end of the day's proceedings.

A quick verdict "would be surprising considering the complexity of the case," said Hampton Dellinger, a legal analyst for NBC News and msnbc.com. "I think a rush to judgment is not what they want."

Shortly after they retired to the jury room, the jurors indicated that they intended to take their time reviewing the four weeks of evidence. They asked U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles for a list of all exhibits published by the defense and the prosecution ? which runs to hundreds of items ? and eight specific exhibits.

The also requested "other notes from Bunny Mellon" ? a reference to evidence related to nearly $750,000 contributed by billionaire Edwards supporter Rachel "Bunny" Mellon.

Mellon, who is 101 years old, didn't testify during the trial, but her attorney and financial adviser, Alex Forger, offered extensive testimony that Mellon knew that her donations were intended to fund the "Hunter problem" and weren't given as campaign contributions.

Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has faced public and private challenges throughout his life and career.

The jurors also requested a transcript of Forger's testimony, but Eagles refused to provide it. She said that if they still need it by the middle of next week, she would reconsider that ruling.

The jury comprises eight men and four women. Six of them are white, five are African-American and one is Hispanic.

Dellinger said the makeup probably suited Edwards. The majority of the jurors are from lower-middle and middle-class backgrounds ? Edwards' main constituency when he served as a U.S. senator from North Carolina.

And he probably "wanted a jury with as many men as possible who might sympathize with his desire to keep the affair quiet from his wife," Dellinger said.

Edwards faces as long as 30 years in federal prison and fines up to $1.5 million if he is convicted on all counts.

TDS(R) Nearly Done with Broadband Stimulus Pre-bid Meetings; Construction Starting Soon in Rural Areas

Madison, Wis. (PRWEB) March 29, 2012

TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS?) announces its three-quarters of the way through pre-bid meetings. During the meetings, TDS outlines its stimulus-funded projects that will expand broadband Internet access to more than 27,000 rural customers across the country.

The pre-bid meetings get us one step closer to putting shovels in the ground, says Andrew Petersen, vice president of External Affairs and Communications for TDS. We are committed to delivering fast, reliable Internet servicesand were getting closer to providing our customers the services they are anxiously awaiting.

This month, TDS hosted meetings in Ala., Ga., Ky., Miss., and Okla. to discuss construction needs for nine of their projects. Since mid-January, TDS has hosted pre-bid meetings for 30 of its 44 projects.

Petersen says In some areas, contracts have been awarded. Now were finalizing plans and schedules so we can start digging. Many communities will see construction activity this spring and summer.

In addition, construction is already underway in Chatham, Mich. and Orchard Farm, Mo.

The projects are funded, in part, by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act via the United States Department of Agricultures (USDA) Rural Utilities Service (RUS). In total, TDS is receiving funding from the RUS that will lead to 27,000 more households gaining access to broadband Internet services by the end of 2013.

Today, TDS offers Internet service to more than 93 percent of their customers nationwide. The remaining seven percent live in mostly rural areas where distance and topography issues push the limits of technology. According to TDS, these issues make it very difficult to develop a solid business case to expand broadband services. The ARRA funds make it possible for companies, like TDS, to expand their networks and deliver services to people currently without access to a reliable high-speed Internet connection.

More details about TDS stimulus funded Internet projects can be found at http://www.tdstelecom.com/MediaRoom/StimulusFunding.aspx.>

Background:

In February 2009, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009; it was signed by President Obama shortly after passage. In August 2009, TDS submitted 13 applications for broadband funding. In December 2009 and January 2010, TDS was awarded two grants totaling $ 12.5 million from the RUS (one of the two federal agencies administering the federal broadband stimulus program) to expand broadband access in Chatham, Mich. and Butler, Ala.

In March 2010, TDS submitted 46 applications for round two funding consideration. In August, TDS was awarded 42 grants (including the four Ind. projects and the Mich. project) bringing the companys total awards to 44 and nearly $ 136 million to expand high-speed Internet services in 20 states. Engineering firms were selected and announced in February 2011, and now pre-bid meetings are taking place. Construction on many sites will begin this spring. Most networks will be completed in 2012 and the remaining in 2013. Complete details at http://www.tdstelecom.com/MediaRoom/StimulusFunding.aspx.>

With fat: What's good or bad for the heart, may be the same for the brain

Friday, May 18, 2012

It has been known for years that eating too many foods containing "bad" fats, such as saturated fats or trans fats, isn't healthy for your heart. However, according to new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), one "bad" fat?saturated fat?was found to be associated with worse overall cognitive function and memory in women over time. By contrast, a "good" fat?mono-unsaturated fat was associated with better overall cognitive function and memory.

This study is published online by Annals of Neurology, a journal of the American Neurological Association and Child Neurology Society, on May 18, 2012.

The research team analyzed data from the Women's Health Study?originally a cohort of nearly 40,000 women, 45 years and older. The researchers focused on data from a subset of 6,000 women, all over the age of 65. The women participated in three cognitive function tests, which were spaced out every two years for an average testing span of four years. These women filled out very detailed food frequency surveys at the start of the Women's Health Study, prior to the cognitive testing.

"When looking at changes in cognitive function, what we found is that the total amount of fat intake did not really matter, but the type of fat did," explained Olivia Okereke, MD, MS, BWH Department of Psychiatry.

Women who consumed the highest amounts of saturated fat, which can come from animal fats such as red meat and butter, compared to those who consumed the lowest amounts, had worse overall cognition and memory over the four years of testing. Women who ate the most of the monounsaturated fats, which can be found in olive oil, had better patterns of cognitive scores over time.

"Our findings have significant public health implications," said Okereke. "Substituting in the good fat in place of the bad fat is a fairly simple dietary modification that could help prevent decline in memory."

Okereke notes that strategies to prevent cognitive decline in older people are particularly important. Even subtle declines in cognitive functioning can lead to higher risk of developing more serious problems, like dementia and Alzheimer disease.

Imprisoned star of 'Reality' impresses at Cannes

(AP) ? The breakout performance at the Cannes Film Festival this year is Aniello Arena's turn as a Naples fishmonger who becomes obsessed with appearing on a "Big Brother"-style TV show in "Reality."

But the star will not be walking the red carpet at the Italian movie's gala premiere Friday. He'll be where he has been for two decades ? in prison.

Arena is riveting in the film by "Gomorrah" director Matteo Garrone ? lively, likable and lost ? and many viewers were astonished to learn he is serving a life sentence for murder. He has worked for a decade with the respected Fortezza prison theater company but has never appeared in a feature film.

"I wanted him to appear in 'Gomorrah,' but the judge wouldn't allow it," said Garrone, whose bloody crime drama won Cannes' second prize in 2008. "We received the authorization for him to appear in the film (Reality) but he was not allowed to come here to Cannes."

Garrone said the absence was "not too bitter a disappointment" for Arena, because the movie's success means he can continue acting. Movie publicists would not comment on the nature of his crime.

Incarceration ? mental rather than physical ? is a theme of the movie, the only Italian entry among 22 contenders for Cannes' top prize, the Palme d'Or. Arena plays Luciano, a hustling but cheery family man who becomes obsessed with the notion of television fame.

Garrone said the film depicts reality TV as "a paradise on Earth ? a kind of El Dorado that people want to reach." Entering the "Big Brother" house becomes an idea that traps Luciano and gradually takes over his life.

The director said the 40-something Arena's exposure to the outside world after years behind bars helped him capture the essence of a man who is beguiled by a world that is new to him.

"I think you can see that in his eyes and in his look," said Garrone. "The character had to be portrayed by someone who is quite candid."

It's a departure from "Gomorrah," his blood-soaked portrait of Naples' ruthless Camorra crime syndicate. Garrone said he spent a long time looking for a "powerful subject" for his follow-up feature before alighting on the idea of a simple tale that would allow him to show another slice of Neapolitan life and "portray with great love a character while denouncing an aspect of society."

It's hard not to see the story as a satire on our celebrity-obsessed culture, but Garrone wants it to have the timeless quality of a fable. He compares it to "Pinocchio," the story of a puppet who yearns to be a real boy. Luciano is a real man who yearns to be a celebrity.

"I don't think I have ever been a very realistic director," Garrone said. "I talk about reality and then transfigure it, lend another dimension ? and then it becomes a fable."

"Reality" is full of heart and humor ? especially from the voluble, Fellini-esque assortment of characters who make up Luciano's family and neighbors ? but it turns darker as Luciano's single-minded pursuit of fame leads to a kind of madness.

"Initially our idea was to produce a comedy," said screenwriter Ugo Chiti. "I think the comedy evolved ... and turned into a sort of tragedy."

Police locate missing safe stolen during house party | Metro

A Saanich family?s safe missing since an out-of-control house party that spread like wildfire over Facebook has been located ? on their rooftop.

The safe was reported missing May 12, but was suspected to have been the result of a Broadmead-area house party held earlier this month on May 5 when the family?s teenage resident decided to host a party while her parents were out of town.

She posted the details on Facebook, which was then passed around through social media, and attracted more than 70 guests ? mostly uninvited ? to the party.

The scene was ?chaotic?, with ?typical fights and liquor violations?, Saanich police told the Vancouver Sun.

Items noted missing right after partiers left the scene, include a laptop and other small items. The laptop was immediately located when an officer monitoring a nearby bus stop found an unclaimed bag.

It wasn?t until the girl?s parents came home a week later that they realized a safe ? containing thousands of dollars in cash, some personal checks and a coin collection ? kept in a locked cabinet in their room was gone.

The safe was finally found after the homeowner noticed that a screen had been removed from the upstairs bathroom window. There it was, sitting on their rooftop.

Attempts had been made to force open the safe with a rock, according to police, but the would-be thieves likely fled when police crashed the party.

Police are warning parents to discuss the issues with advertising parties on social media sites and to ensure their home and children are supervised while they?re away.

The burst of Republican activity amounted to a primal scream of frustration over the fact that the Senate has not passed a budget in three years. Many political analysts agree with Republicans, who charge that Democrats have steadfastly refused to offer a budget to protect senators facing tough reelection contests from unpopular votes.

For their part, Democrats say?last summer's Budget Control Act ? the legislation stemming from the debt-ceiling deal, which included caps on discretionary spending for the next decade ? effectively functions as a budget.

None of the five proposals introduced Wednesday crossed the 60-vote threshold needed to overcome a filibuster. Three came from GOP senators, one was the House budget championed by Rep. Paul Ryan (R) of Wisconsin, and the final offering was President Obama's own budget, which Democrats said Republicans changed and introduced only as a gimmick ? it was unanimously defeated.?

In conversations with reporters and on the Senate floor, Republicans repeatedly denounced Senate Democrats for failing offer their own budget proposal.?

?Does the majority party not feel an obligation to tell the American people where they want to lead the country?? said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R) of Alabama on the Senate floor. ?Do they, in a time of financial crisis, feel they don?t have to lay out a plan??

The Senate proposals came from Republican Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mike Lee of Utah, and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and broadly aimed?to bring the federal budget into balance within the next decade.?

To do so, they envision broad cuts to government spending, such as the elimination of four government departments under?Senator Paul?s budget, overhauls of Medicare and Social Security under?Senator Lee?s proposal,?and slashing discretionary spending back to 2006 levels under Senator Toomey?s plan.?
