Jack White Headed For First #1 Album

'I've got another 12 songs that I haven't finished yet,' White says of his extra tracks for another LP.

It's hard to believe, but restless rocker Jack White has never scored a #1 album. Not with the White Stripes, or with any of his other side bands (the Dead Weather, the Raconteurs).

But according to Billboard estimates, that drought may end next week when the #1 six-string hustler is predicted to take the top spot with his solo debut, Blunderbuss.

The disc is expected to move between 100,000-120,000 copies in an otherwise slow week. Though White has landed seven top 10 albums with his various other groups, his highest chart debut or peak with them was the White Stripes' 2007 masterpiece, Icky Thump, which came in and peaked at #2.

It should come as no surprise that the man who has made a career at juggling 50 things at once, and who is also working on his first soundtrack album for Johnny Depp's "Lone Ranger"
movie, has plenty more music in the can. In addition to the 12 tracks he recorded for Blunderbuss, White told England's Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe that he's already got a stockpile of songs for a possible follow-up.

"We had enough for an album at one point, but I just kept going ... I've got another 12 songs that I haven't finished yet ... There's songs that White Stripes never really played live, or Raconteurs never really got that into, or songs that I brought to the table in a band - songs like '[I Cut Like a] Buffalo' - and now I can elaborate on them".

White is getting ready to hit the road with his unique band set-up, which consists of one all-male and one all-female crew
, who are not informed about whether they will play each night until just before the show. "The easy thing to do would be to go and find four or five guys to play in just like the record and stand behind me," he said. "I just didn't want to bore myself to death and bore people with that jazz and it just to just be some nostalgia thing."

Jennie Garth to Play Nancy Grace in a Lifetime Movie?

Nancy Grace sure has had an interesting life. And now Jennie Garth is playing her alter ego in a Lifetime movie based on the legal analyst's 2009 best-selling novel, The Eleventh Victim. Garth will play Hailey Dean, a young assistant D.A. who prosecutes a case against her fiance's killer. And then -- oh no! -- he targets her when he gets out of jail. Sounds very dramatic and Lifetime-esque, doesn't it?

HTC One X case: Clear hard shell gets some forum love

HTC One X Case

We know, we know. You folks are chomping at the bit -- especially here in the U.S. -- to get your hands on an HTC One X. (We've still got a couple weeks before it drops on AT&T here.) But for the moment, let's talk about the HTC One X case.

HTC One X CaseWe've already given you a little preview of HTC's own slim case. (Actually, that's us calling it a "slim case." HTC didn't even have a name for it yet when we saw it last week.) It's a really thin plastic deal that snaps onto the phone, offering some pretty basic protection. We've seen two versions -- one with a series of circles, and another that kind of looks like window blinds. The idea was that HTC didn't want to break up the underlying look and feel of the device. But while the cases certainly are slim (and they do fit very nicely), the designs are a bit on the extreme side. We'll just have to see how popular they are when they're finally made available. (And, no, we don't know when that will be.)

And we've done a full-blown review of the HTC One X Hard Shell Case with a flip stand.

But now we're getting another look at a new case -- and one that definitely lets the design of the phone shine through. Chrisjcks has posted a series of pics in our HTC One X forums showing the phone in the official HTC clear hard shell case. No crazy designs this time, just some pretty basic protection that still lets the polycarbonate shell of the phone show through.  One piece of bad news is that it looks like the charging contacts are covered, which means you'll need to remove the case to use the phone in one of HTC's docks. (The crazy-designed cases we played with last week will actually work with the docks -- no removal required.)

Check out more pics and full rundown in our HTC One X forums!

PayNearMe Takes Cash Payments System Mobile

payPayNearMe, an alternative payments product that provides a compelling way for the 'unbanked' to use cash payments for online goods, is debuting its first mobile integration today. As you may know, the term "unbanked" refers to consumers who don?t have traditional bank accounts or cannot qualify for credit cards. PayNearMe allows people who don't have or don't want to use credit or debit cards to purchase products, pay for bills and more with cash at thousands of 7-Eleven stores in the continental U.S. Here's how PayNearMe works. With participating partners, e-commerce or merchant sites, consumers can use the PayNearMe option to pay for purchases or debts owed. You simply place your order with PayNearMe and print out the given receipt. You then take that receipt into a 7-Eleven and they scan it and you pay in cash. Once you pay, your order with the retailer or merchant will be fulfilled.

Project Glass makes a TV appearance on Charlie Rose, flashes its rear for the cameras

Google fellow, founder of Project X and self-driving car pioneer Sebastian Thrun became the latest to publicly rock a Project Glass prototype (after company co-founder Sergey Brin) on a recent episode of Charlie Rose, and managed to show off a whole new side of the project in the process. While the 19-minute interview was mostly unremarkable product-wise with a focus on higher education and his Udacity project, we did get to see him take a picture of the host (about a minute in) by tapping it, then posting it on Google+ by nodding twice. Also, as Electronista points out, in a brief reverse shot (17:20) of Thrun we see for the first time what appears to be a small battery pack / transmitter portion lodged behind his ear. Of course, we're still not any closer to rocking the latest in bionic man-chic ourselves, but at least we can start getting fitted for one now.

Can 'NSYNC, Backstreet Boys Make Battle Of The Boy Bands Comeback?

Westlife and 5ive could upset two of the biggest boy bands of all time in the first round. Vote now!
By Christina Garibaldi

We are still in the first round of voting in MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands, and already we are seeing some big surprises. Backstreet Boys are finding themselves behind Irish boy band Westlife, 'NSYNC are trailing former boy band 5ive and New Kids on the Block are neck-and-neck with British boy band Take That.

It seems like fans are rallying behind their favorites and battling it out to make sure they move on to the next round.

"I don't see how BSB and 'NSYNC are losing?!?!" MTV News reader Britney commented. Another fan, nickestlife, wrote, "Please VOTE WESTLIFE!!!! Don't let them LOSE!!!"

But the question on a lot of minds is: Why aren't the boy bands that dominated the U.S. pop charts not easily moving on to the next round?

"Remember that in America, while Westlife and Take That and 5ive were all a blip on the radar in the U.S., in the U.K. Take That and Westlife are enormous," Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts/retail at Billboard told MTV News. "Westlife, for example, has had 14 #1 singles on the U.K. singles chart, the second most among groups only behind the Beatles, so they're kind of big."

According to Melissa Maerz, senior writer for Entertainment Weekly, the fact that these older boy bands are British may work in their favor, especially with the emergence of One Direction and the Wanted.

"I think probably what's happening is a combination of things. I think the fact that One Direction is in the news for having the biggest debut of a British band of all time, including the Beatles, has really made everyone pay attention to them and everyone is talking about One Direction," Maerz said. "And because they and the Wanted are coming at the same time, people are starting to pay attention to British boy bands, and the kids who are just discovering One Direction and the Wanted probably have parents who can say to them, 'Oh, this is kind of the same thing that happened when Westlife and Take That came to our shores."

But no matter what their chart performance may be, or where they come from, their advancement in the next round depends on only one thing: the fans.

"It frankly just comes down to: Are there passionate fans that are going to bother to spend the time on voting?" Caulfied said. "I think, generally speaking, when you have two acts going against one another, whoever has the most motivated, contemporary, engaged fanbase on the Web will win."

Voting is under way in round one of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands and closes at noon ET on Thursday, April 26. Winners are determined by fan ballots, so if your favorite band made the cut, keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits daily for boy-band video takeovers. OLED Display Blocks pack six 128 x 128 panels, we go hands-on at MIT (video)

Image

How do you develop an OLED display that gives a 360-degree perspective? Toss six 1.25-inch panels into a plastic cube, then turn it as you see fit. That's an overly simplistic explanation for the six-sided display on hand at the MIT Media Lab today, which is quite limited in its current form, but could eventually serve an enormous variety of applications. Fluid Interfaces Group Research Assistant Pol Pla i Conesa presented several such scenarios for his Display Blocks, which consist of 128 x 128-pixel OLED panels. Take, for example, the 2004 film Crash, which tells interweaving stories that could be presented simultaneously with such a display -- simply rotate the cube until you land on a narrative you'd like to follow, and the soundtrack will adjust to match. It could also go a long way when it comes to visualizing data, especially when in groups -- instead of virtually constructing profiles of individuals who applied for a slot at MIT, for example, or segments of a business that need to be organized based on different parameters, you could have each assigned to a cube, which can be tossed into an accepted or rejected pile, and repositioned as necessary.

Imagine having a group of display cubes when it comes time to plan the seating chart for a reception -- each cube could represent one individual, with a color-coded background and a name or photo up top, with different descriptive elements on each side. The same could apply to products at monstrous companies like Samsung or Sony, where executives need to make planning decisions based on product performance, and could benefit greatly from having all of the necessary information for a single gadget listed around each cube. On a larger scale, the cubes could be used to replace walls and floors in a building -- want to change the color of your wallpaper? Just push a new image to the display, and dedicate a portion of the wall for watching television, or displaying artwork. You could accomplish this with networked single-sided panels as well, but that wouldn't be nearly as much fun. The Media Lab had a working prototype on display today, which demonstrated the size and basic functionality, but didn't have an adjustable picture. Still, it's easy to imagine the potential of such a device, if, of course, it ever becomes a reality. As always, you'll find our hands-on demo just past the break.
