ATLANTA (AP) ? One child out of 88 in the U.S. is believed to have autism or a related disorder, an increase in the rate attributed largely to wider screening.
Advocacy groups seized on the new number as further evidence that autism research and services should get more attention.
"Autism is now officially becoming an epidemic in the United States," said Mark Roithmayr, president of Autism Speaks, at a news conference where the new figures were released Thursday.
The previous estimate was 1 in 110. The new figure is from the latest in a series of studies that have steadily raised the government's autism estimate. This new number means autism is nearly twice as common as officials said it was only five years ago, and likely affects roughly 1 million U.S. children and teens.
Health officials attribute the increase largely to better recognition of cases, through wider screening and better diagnosis. But the search for the cause of autism is really only beginning, and officials acknowledge that other factors may be helping to drive up the numbers.
"One thing the data tells us with certainty ? there are many children and families who need help," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency that released the estimate.
For decades, the diagnosis was given only to kids with severe language, intellectual and social impairments and unusual, repetitious behaviors. But the definition of the disorder has gradually expanded, so that now "autism" is also shorthand for a group of milder, related conditions, including Asperger's syndrome.
Still, Melissa Miller, a St. Petersburg, Fla., mom whose daughter, Chelsea, was diagnosed last year at age 2, said many people misunderstand the disorder.
"I think many people hear 'autism' and think 'Rain Man,'" she said, referring to the 1988 movie featuring Dustin Hoffman as an extremely socially impaired autistic man.
"The autism spectrum is so vast and all of our children are different. Many of them don't rock back and forth or have savant skills. They are sweet, affectionate, intelligent, goofy ? and exhausting ? kids," Miller said.
There are no blood or biologic tests for autism, so diagnosis is not an exact science. It's identified by making judgments about a child's behavior.
Meanwhile, there's been an explosion in autism-related treatment and services for children. In 1990, Congress added autism as a separate disability category to a federal law that guarantees special education services. School districts have been building up autism-addressing programs since.
The CDC study is considered the most comprehensive U.S. investigation of autism prevalence to date. Researchers gathered data from areas in 14 states ? Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah and Wisconsin.
They looked specifically at 8-year-old children because most autism is diagnosed by that age. They checked health and school records to see which children met the criteria for autism, even if they hadn't been formally diagnosed. Then, the researchers calculated how common autism was in each place and overall.
An earlier report based on 2002 findings estimated that about 1 in 150 children that age had autism or a related disorder such as Asperger's. After seeing 2006 data, the figure was revised to about 1 in 110. The estimate of 1 in 88, based on 2008 data, is about 1.1 percent of kids that age.
The study also found that autism disorders were almost five times more common in boys, while a growing number of black and Hispanic children were also reported to have them. And an increasingly large proportion of children with autism have IQs of 85 or higher, it said ? a finding that contradicts a past assumption that most autistic kids had IQs of 70 or lower.
Higher autism rates were found in some places than others. For example in Utah, as many as 1 in 47 of the 8-year-olds had an autism spectrum disorder. In New Jersey, 1 in 49 did.
Alabama was at the other end of the scale, with only about 1 in 210 identified as autistic. The difference was attributed to less information: Researchers were not able to access school information in that state and a few others, and as a result believe they have a less complete picture.
That's a reasonable explanation, said Zachary Warren, director of an autism treatment and research institute at Vanderbilt University.
"How you go looking for something is going to affect what you find," he said.
In the early 1990s, only a few out of every 10,000 children were diagnosed with the condition, based on some small studies in individual states or cities. But the numbers began to change dramatically after 2000, when Congress directed federal health officials to do more autism research, and CDC started the larger study to see how common autism is.
CDC is also studying the cause of autism, which has remained a mystery.
Scientists say genetics play a role.
Some parents and others have believed childhood vaccines trigger autism. However, many studies have not found a connection,
CDC researchers are looking at other possible factors, including illnesses that mothers had while they were pregnant with children who later were diagnosed as autistic. The researchers also are looking into antidepressants and other medications that the pregnant women took and those given to their children when they were young. The first results of that study are expected next year.
Parents are hungry for more answers.
Approaching her second birthday, Cristina Astacio spoke only a few words, wouldn't respond to her name, and shunned other kids in her day-care group in New York. Last October her parents found out why ? specialists said the toddler had autism.
Cristina's parents knew autism was a possibility when Cristina failed to meet many of the developmental milestones they'd seen in their older son. But that didn't make the diagnosis easy to accept.
"I was blaming myself, wondering if there was anything I could have done" to have prevented it, said the girl's mother, Charisse.

Where do you belong? Where are your communities? For instance, I?m just getting into Soundcloud as a music and audio community. I?ve participated in and thought deeply in the impact of communities on business for well over a decade at this point. What?s on my mind is whether companies realize what an investment in their community means.
I?m fortunate to have you as a reader of this blog. I am blessed. Every day that you spend some of your time with me is a treasure. The community that I think of as home base, right now, however, is related-but-not-the-same. I?m pouring my soul into the work of maintaining my newsletter community.
First, think about that phrase: newsletter community. Those words go together like ?chocolate steak,? (which, I bet would actually be tasty). But why? Because I?ve chosen to make that community the most intimate, the one with the most access to me, and the one where I will interact the most.
Think about the intimacy of your inbox. When I?m fortunate enough to earn my way in there (and maybe you get this blog in your inbox, but you can?t easily reply to it there, can you?), then I?m inside your real social network, aren?t I? I?m inside the place where you can share in a very meaningful way, instead of a one-button way. Think of what I earn by having that position in your experience and consumption.
In the coming weeks, I will be making many more offers to my newsletter community, giving more of my time away, providing more value for people?s participation. I have chosen this community as where I will invest. And if you?re part of it, you?ll get the very best of me and as much of my time as I can muster.
Here? On the blog? I?ll write useful posts that might get you thinking. As I hope this one did.
What comes next, I believe, isn?t a fascination with a social network of 1 billion. It?s cultivating your very own passionate 1000. Are you part of that passionate 1000?
Join me in that conversation here.

These days it can be strange to hear men and women say, ?I?m just not pc literate,? as computers have evolved from traditional scientific calculators to simple point-and-click type devices. We suspect in which today?s ?computer illiterates? are people who haven?t taken some time to experiment with such a equipment. And we strongly feel that spending just twenty minutes with one could turn the most adamant scientific caveman into any one those who have fun wreaking chatroom havoc on the Internet right now.
Today, one just needs to learn how to manipulate a mouse, strike a few buttons over a keyboard, or really just turn the one thing on to use a pc. It?s hard for some folks to believe, but the personal computers of this generation nearly run themselves! To keep things interesting, let?s investigate just how little knowledge these kind of thousand-dollar machines actually demand.
Can an absolute newbie operate a computer not understanding how to use a computer mouse button or keyboard? Let?s assume that a computer is set up to function on voice command ? sure! Speech command software permits users to tell a computer what to do and the pc responds by satisfying the user?s commands. Although it?s pretty brand-new and still under development, voice directed technology has already infiltrated client service related systems.
Think back to the last moment that you paid a bill over the phone. Rather than speaking to a human being, chances are that you spoke to some computer that not just responded to what you stated and followed the actual commands that you offered it, it also inquired you for more information for example your full name or perhaps credit card number. In cases like this, a person (such as yourself) operated a computer without knowing it!
Can an utter newbie sit down at the computer without knowing the way you use one? Assuming that a computer is set up to operate on touch command * the answer is again, yes! Touch command software program allows users to literally touch things on a monitor and also tell the computer how to handle a finger. Called ?kiosks,? these plans are already in use worldwide at ATM machines, job centers, and in wellness monitoring systems.
None a mouse nor a keyboard is needed. A computer user just needs to touch a variety of boxes on a monitor to control a computer. Certain, the programming behind such technology will be extensive and superior, but to the user, it makes computer make use of less intimidating and also plain easy.
Obviously when we talk about working a computer, we imagine more involvement compared to speaking on the phone or perhaps touching things over a screen. The above pictures were just a couple of instances of how far computer technology is continuing to grow, and how far we have now pushed ?user-friendliness? to its restrict. Eventually, the keyboard and also mouse will have to may play a role when computer newbies have to work with a single as a cash register, as being a hotel booking system, or as a library?s listing system.
These specifications don?t make personal computers any less simpler to operate, but they will not make them that much more difficult either. So much of today?s software is designed to allow for the experience of a new consumer that anyone may get connected to the Internet, send out an email message, and also download an MP3 file within the very first five hours of shopping for a personal PC.
Many of the top touch screen laptop may end up being uncovered here, although people can certainly in addition find rugged laptop not to mention notebook laptop if you pay a visit to many of our web site

CHICAGO (AP) ? Older patients with clogged heart arteries may have a little lower death risk over time if they have bypass operations instead of angioplasty and stents to fix the problem.
In a bypass operation, doctors move healthy segments of blood vessels from other parts of the body to create detours around clogged arteries supplying blood to the heart. Angioplasty repairs the damage through a tube pushed through a blood vessel. A tiny balloon is inflated to flatten the clog and a mesh scaffold, a stent, is placed to prop the artery open.
Researchers compared these approaches using Medicare records on 190,000 patients with two or three clogged arteries ? the largest study ever of this issue. Death rates were similar one year after either treatment. But after four years, nearly 21 percent of the angioplasty patients had died versus about 16 percent of those who had bypass surgery.
Doctors say differences in the overall health of people who had surgery versus the less drastic procedure could account for some of the results. They say angioplasty remains a good and safe option for many people.
"You're not making a mistake if you still have angioplasty," especially if you are over 65 with only one or two blockages, said Dr. Kirk Garratt of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. He is a spokesman for the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, doctors who do angioplasties.
In the United States, more than a million operations or procedures are done each year to treat clogged arteries, and the study "provides comprehensive, large-scale, national data" to help doctors and patients decide which treatment is best, Dr. Susan Shurin said in a statement. She is acting director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which sponsored the study.
Results were discussed Tuesday at an American College of Cardiology conference in Chicago and published online by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Movie Review (2012)
Film: ?Agent Vinod?
Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Prem Chopra
Directed by: Sriram Raghavan
Rating:?

?
Believe me, it?s really a small world. Even though a film purporting to be as epic in proportion as ?Agent Vinod? travels all across the world to capture some of the most never-seen spots in the world, the plot ? an intelligent clever, urbane and wry melange of Bourne and Bond, ?Farz? and ?Mission Impossible?, finally finds its most assured resting-place in apana jahaan Delhi.
The last half hour where an international terrorist outfit attempts to blow up Delhi, gets the grammar of an espionage thriller so riveting and so right, you wonder what took director Sriram Raghavan so long to get there.
?Agent Vinod? is the kind of meticulously crafted spy drama where cerebral considerations mesh into more earthy demands of commercial Hindi cinema, like item songs in smoky bars, shootouts in dust toasted-brown locations that are as treacherous as they are daunting and, wonder of wonders, a clumsily-choreographed Mujra which doesn?t quite fit into the smooth storytelling.
Smitten more than we can eschew.
From its opening in a Taliban-infested area, there is no dearth of intrigue in ?Agent Vinod?. Agents, counter-agents, moles and molls, open-air flea markets and shopping malls jostle for attention in a script that appears to know its John le Carrre as well as its Nick Carter.
Raghavan spins a delicious yarn of guns and growls, but blessedly no gadgets. The action is crackling. The soundtrack is a chirpy mix of cheesy retro (RD and Asha Bhosle ?Meri jaan tune kaha? from the film ?The Train? pops up unannounced) and contemporary techno sounds.
The plot, perched precariously on the brink of self-indulgence, never spins out of control.
Clearly Sriram and Saif adore the spy genre. We can see the fun they?ve had in doing this film. But beneath the boys-having-fun mood is an undertone of reverence for all the espionage films from our own ?Agent Vinod? in 1977 to Hollywood?s Mission Impossible series.
Holding the restless plot in place is Saif?s clenched and controlled performance. He desists from playing the spy to the galleries. He is urbane cool, yes. But he doesn?t enjoy shooting the enemies for his country and really, patriotic jingoism is left far behind in the race to save civilisation from a nuclear catastrophe. There?s a job to be done. And no room for fornication and fun.
Agent Vinod must be the only spy film from India where the Indian flag is not saluted or even mentioned in passing in hushed or shrill tones. This guy with a funny name would rather get along with the job .
Saif?s performance is unfussy, no-nonsense and largely humourless. The end-title when he attempts to do a funny song seem so out of character, you wonder why the spy is trying so hard to be comical when we like him Martini-dry .
Ambling from one exotic location to another with the irradiant Kareena Kapoor in tow, Saif is a portrait of restrained heroism. He gets much-needed support from a cast of actors who seem to have been chosen without a second option. Every player knows his job and does it without looking distracted or self-important.
Raghavan?s direction is deep-focussed on the inner world of people who live on the edge. There is no room for romance or emotions. In the only meaty sequence that she has, Kareena moves us to tears when she tells Saif she wants a normal girl?s life. Significantly Saif eats as she weeps.
No, he isn?t rude. Just honest. Life doesn?t just go on. It goes on uncaring about those moments of tearful stock-taking which moviegoers would like to think of as the essence of life.
For all its sharply-defined interludes of counter-intelligence manoeuvres, ?Agent Vinod? tends to get long-winded, though miraculously the narrative never gets out of breath. On the contrary it takes our breath away towards the end when in a climactic bomb-defusion end-game that is reminiscent of Mani Shankar?s ?16 December?.
The globally-shot material is edited by Pooja Ladha Surti with more room for the narrative to sprawl and recline than necessary. Really, how much of the disconnected derring-do can we take before we throw our hands up in unresisting surrender?
The action sequences by Peter Heins and Parvez are sometimes heart-in-the-mouth. Other times they seem to have been put together on the editing table.
Life?s like that. You are either swept away in circumstances beyond your control. Or you create situations that you choose to be swept away in.
?Agent Vinod? is not quite the overwhelming experience that you would want a global espionage thriller to be. More thoughtful than thundering, more la Carre and less Bond it nonetheless take the spy genre in Hindi to a new level of finesse. Finally, the cool quotient in Raghavan?s chic spin on the espionage thriller is so high that you forget Bond and all his bloody brothers.
Saif imparts a dry devilish dispassion to his spy?s part,. He doesn?t get time to tell Kareena how much he loves her.
That?s for the best. We already know that.
