Kazakh military plane crashes, all 27 on board killed

ALMATY (Reuters) - A military transport plane crashed in southern Kazakhstan on Tuesday, killing all 27 people on board, including the commander of the Central Asian nation's border guards, local media and the KNB security service said.

The twin-engine Antonov An-72 jet disappeared from radar screens at about 1900 local time (1300 GMT) as it was making a descent near the city of Shymkent, the capital of the South Kazakhstan Region.

Kazakhstan's Channel 7 television showed early footage of charred and mangled fragments of the airplane scattered around a cordoned off area in a raging blizzard.

Kazakhstan's KNB security service said the plane, bound for Shymkent from the capital Astana, belonged to its border troops.

The commander of the country's border guards, Turganbek Stambekov, was among those on board, it said on its site (www.knb.kz). The plane was carrying a crew of seven as well as 20 servicemen.

The passengers also included senior border guard officers from southern Kazakhstan. The border guards had been due to make a stopover in Shymkent and then fly to the Uzbek capital Tashkent for talks with Uzbek colleagues, local media said.

The plane plunged to the ground in bad weather from an altitude of about 800 meters as it was making a fourth circle, trying to land, Kazakh television channels said.

KTK channel broadcast footage of an eyewitness saying he had heard a loud explosion and had seen flames at the crash site.

Quoting Kazakh air traffic controllers, Channel 7 said the plane had crashed into an open-cast mine some 21 km (13 miles) from Shymkent, and rescue teams could not immediately reach the crash site.

AWS outage brings Netflix down for some devices on Christmas Eve

AWS outage brings Netflix down for some devices on Christmas Eve

Has an evening with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation become an annual holiday tradition? Or perhaps you enjoy a pre-present thrill, courtesy of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Whatever the flick, there's a good chance you won't be watching it on Netflix Instant Streaming tonight, reportedly due to an outage over at Amazon Web Services. Netflix cloud architect Adrian Cockroft is on the case, explaining on Twitter that the interruption will affect only certain devices -- while we're not quite sure which gadgets are currently down, we have received reports that gaming consoles and connected TVs have gone offline. Netflix, for its part, has also taken to Twitter to apologize for the outage, suggesting that you follow the as-yet-silent @Netflixhelps account for updates.

Security Loophole In Facebook?s Camera App Allowed Hackers To Hijack Accounts Over WiFi [Confirmed]

Screen Shot 2012-12-24 at 10.55.10 AMPSA to all Facebook Camera users on iOS: If you haven’t update you app in the past few days, update?it now. The older version of the app, pre-1.1.2 and released before December 21, has a?security loophole. When used over WiFi networks, malicious hackers can tap the network and hijack Camera users’ accounts, picking up information like email addresses and passwords in the process. The white-hat hacker who ID’d the problem is Mohamed Ramadan, an Egypt-based security researcher and trainer with Attack-Secure?who has also found and reported vulnerabilities for Apple, Google, and Etsy — which apparently also had the same loophole in its iOS app. Ramadan tells us that the issue lied in the Camera app’s Secure Sockets Layer certification, which was too open. As he puts it, “The problem is the app accepts any SSL certification from any source, even evil SSL certifications and this enables any attacker to perform Man in The Middle Attack against anyone uses Facebook Camera App for IPhone. This means that the application doesn?t warn the user if someone in the same [WiFi network] trying to hijack his Facebook account.” Testing his theory by using a proxy to listen in on a WiFi network, he was able to type in his username and password into the Camera app, and then see that information appear via the proxy. Ramadan notes that he’s tested all Facebook apps and the rest appear to protect from this similar vulnerability. We’ve reached out to Facebook for comment but haven’t received a response. [Update: Facebook has confirmed Ramadan's bug discovery, which it addresses in the 1.1.2 version, and provided us with the following statement, noting that there is no evidence that the bug ever got exploited in the wild:] “We applaud the security researcher who brought this bug to our attention for responsibly reporting the bug to our White Hat Program. We worked with the team to make sure we understood the full scope of the bug, which allowed us to fix it and upgrade the Camera application without any evidence that this bug was?exploited in the wild.?Users are only vulnerable if they are using an unsecured or untrusted public wireless?network?and an older version of the application. As always,?we remind all users to only connect to networks they trust. Users can protect themselves by downloading the latest version of the Camera?app.??Due to the responsible reporting of this issue to Facebook, no

3 Gift-Giving Habits to Apply to Your Writing: by Elizabeth Stark

"holiday cheers" by devi laskar

?holiday cheers? by devi laskar

1)?? Try to keep things a secret. This is not something we are great at in our family, though we are getting better. We always want to let someone know as soon as we?ve gotten?or even thought of?the perfect present. Leo and Charlie are making secrets gifts in class for us, and Leo keeps asking me if I want to know what ?prise he?s giving me. As writers, we must fight against the urge to divulge, and remember that as with the holidays, everyone enjoys the suspense of not knowing. The not knowing is way more fun than the stripped socks or whatever is revealed at the end of the not knowing . . .

2)?? Make the wrapping festive and enticing. Now we?re digging down into the lesson in #1. The journey is the destination and all that. How you feel about the gift you are giving is indicated by how you wrap it. It?s terrific to get creative?maps make great wrapping and so do comic pages (which items at this point probably double as antiques)?but not be careless with the action that comes before the revelation. See? It?s all about story. You keep your secrets and you disguise them with gorgeous, fascinating wrapping.

3)?? Go for surprise and inevitability. When you are choosing gifts, you are keeping in mind what you know of the receipient?what that person loves and enjoys, what amuses him or her?and you are also trying to give something she or he does not already have. The perfect gift is something the recipient would never have thought of but instantly desires?and is thrilled to aquire. This is a lot to ask for a holiday present but not too much to ask of a story . . .

It is so very important to take care of yourself and this is especially true when it comes to your mind, body and spirit. I go to Symmetry because this is a holistic wellness center that has a lot to offer. I love the massages and I also love their coaching methods as well. It is a great place to go and take care of yourself and their prices are very affordable as well. I love going there and feel right at home.

Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup

The Mayans turned out to be wrong about the end of the world, but there was still a lot of gloom this week as we watched the procession of funerals for victims of the Newtown shooting. On Thursday alone, services were held for four six-year-olds and one seven-year-old. In an attempt at establishing some normalcy for those kids who survived, officials are recreating their classrooms at a nearby school, right down to the art on the walls and the placement of desks and backpacks. That's good for the children; the rest of us need the exact opposite. We need to break the all-too familiar routine of gun-victim funerals and leaders who helplessly throw up their hands. On Wednesday, the president announced that Joe Biden would lead a task force on gun violence. It's a step in the right direction, but only if it results in legislation that makes a week of wrenching funerals begin to seem utterly unfamiliar.
