Wed, 26 Dec 2012 23:00:40 -0800 Kazakh military plane crashes, all 27 on board killed http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/kazakh-military-plane-crashes-all-27-on-board http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/kazakh-military-plane-crashes-all-27-on-board

ALMATY (Reuters) - A military transport plane crashed in southern Kazakhstan on Tuesday, killing all 27 people on board, including the commander of the Central Asian nation's border guards, local media and the KNB security service said.

The twin-engine Antonov An-72 jet disappeared from radar screens at about 1900 local time (1300 GMT) as it was making a descent near the city of Shymkent, the capital of the South Kazakhstan Region.

Kazakhstan's Channel 7 television showed early footage of charred and mangled fragments of the airplane scattered around a cordoned off area in a raging blizzard.

Kazakhstan's KNB security service said the plane, bound for Shymkent from the capital Astana, belonged to its border troops.

The commander of the country's border guards, Turganbek Stambekov, was among those on board, it said on its site (www.knb.kz). The plane was carrying a crew of seven as well as 20 servicemen.

The passengers also included senior border guard officers from southern Kazakhstan. The border guards had been due to make a stopover in Shymkent and then fly to the Uzbek capital Tashkent for talks with Uzbek colleagues, local media said.

The plane plunged to the ground in bad weather from an altitude of about 800 meters as it was making a fourth circle, trying to land, Kazakh television channels said.

KTK channel broadcast footage of an eyewitness saying he had heard a loud explosion and had seen flames at the crash site.

Quoting Kazakh air traffic controllers, Channel 7 said the plane had crashed into an open-cast mine some 21 km (13 miles) from Shymkent, and rescue teams could not immediately reach the crash site.

AWS outage brings Netflix down for some devices on Christmas Eve

Has an evening with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation become an annual holiday tradition? Or perhaps you enjoy a pre-present thrill, courtesy of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Whatever the flick, there's a good chance you won't be watching it on Netflix Instant Streaming tonight, reportedly due to an outage over at Amazon Web Services. Netflix cloud architect Adrian Cockroft is on the case, explaining on Twitter that the interruption will affect only certain devices -- while we're not quite sure which gadgets are currently down, we have received reports that gaming consoles and connected TVs have gone offline. Netflix, for its part, has also taken to Twitter to apologize for the outage, suggesting that you follow the as-yet-silent @Netflixhelps account for updates.

Tue, 25 Dec 2012 20:47:57 -0800 Security Loophole In Facebook?s Camera App Allowed Hackers To Hijack Accounts Over WiFi [Confirmed] http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/security-loophole-in-facebooks-camera-app-all http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/security-loophole-in-facebooks-camera-app-all Screen Shot 2012-12-24 at 10.55.10 AMPSA to all Facebook Camera users on iOS: If you haven’t update you app in the past few days, update?it now. The older version of the app, pre-1.1.2 and released before December 21, has a?security loophole. When used over WiFi networks, malicious hackers can tap the network and hijack Camera users’ accounts, picking up information like email addresses and passwords in the process. The white-hat hacker who ID’d the problem is Mohamed Ramadan, an Egypt-based security researcher and trainer with Attack-Secure?who has also found and reported vulnerabilities for Apple, Google, and Etsy — which apparently also had the same loophole in its iOS app. Ramadan tells us that the issue lied in the Camera app’s Secure Sockets Layer certification, which was too open. As he puts it, “The problem is the app accepts any SSL certification from any source, even evil SSL certifications and this enables any attacker to perform Man in The Middle Attack against anyone uses Facebook Camera App for IPhone. This means that the application doesn?t warn the user if someone in the same [WiFi network] trying to hijack his Facebook account.” Testing his theory by using a proxy to listen in on a WiFi network, he was able to type in his username and password into the Camera app, and then see that information appear via the proxy. Ramadan notes that he’s tested all Facebook apps and the rest appear to protect from this similar vulnerability. We’ve reached out to Facebook for comment but haven’t received a response. [Update: Facebook has confirmed Ramadan's bug discovery, which it addresses in the 1.1.2 version, and provided us with the following statement, noting that there is no evidence that the bug ever got exploited in the wild:] “We applaud the security researcher who brought this bug to our attention for responsibly reporting the bug to our White Hat Program. We worked with the team to make sure we understood the full scope of the bug, which allowed us to fix it and upgrade the Camera application without any evidence that this bug was?exploited in the wild.?Users are only vulnerable if they are using an unsecured or untrusted public wireless?network?and an older version of the application. As always,?we remind all users to only connect to networks they trust. Users can protect themselves by downloading the latest version of the Camera?app.??Due to the responsible reporting of this issue to Facebook, no

Tue, 25 Dec 2012 18:56:46 -0800 3 Gift-Giving Habits to Apply to Your Writing: by Elizabeth Stark http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/3-gift-giving-habits-to-apply-to-your-writing http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/3-gift-giving-habits-to-apply-to-your-writing "holiday cheers" by devi laskar

?holiday cheers? by devi laskar

1)?? Try to keep things a secret. This is not something we are great at in our family, though we are getting better. We always want to let someone know as soon as we?ve gotten?or even thought of?the perfect present. Leo and Charlie are making secrets gifts in class for us, and Leo keeps asking me if I want to know what ?prise he?s giving me. As writers, we must fight against the urge to divulge, and remember that as with the holidays, everyone enjoys the suspense of not knowing. The not knowing is way more fun than the stripped socks or whatever is revealed at the end of the not knowing . . .

2)?? Make the wrapping festive and enticing. Now we?re digging down into the lesson in #1. The journey is the destination and all that. How you feel about the gift you are giving is indicated by how you wrap it. It?s terrific to get creative?maps make great wrapping and so do comic pages (which items at this point probably double as antiques)?but not be careless with the action that comes before the revelation. See? It?s all about story. You keep your secrets and you disguise them with gorgeous, fascinating wrapping.

3)?? Go for surprise and inevitability. When you are choosing gifts, you are keeping in mind what you know of the receipient?what that person loves and enjoys, what amuses him or her?and you are also trying to give something she or he does not already have. The perfect gift is something the recipient would never have thought of but instantly desires?and is thrilled to aquire. This is a lot to ask for a holiday present but not too much to ask of a story . . .

Happy Holidays from Elizabeth and Angie and The Book Writing World

It is so very important to take care of yourself and this is especially true when it comes to your mind, body and spirit. I go to Symmetry because this is a holistic wellness center that has a lot to offer. I love the massages and I also love their coaching methods as well. It is a great place to go and take care of yourself and their prices are very affordable as well. I love going there and feel right at home.

Mon, 24 Dec 2012 02:07:59 -0800 Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/arianna-huffington-sunday-roundup http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/arianna-huffington-sunday-roundup

The Mayans turned out to be wrong about the end of the world, but there was still a lot of gloom this week as we watched the procession of funerals for victims of the Newtown shooting. On Thursday alone, services were held for four six-year-olds and one seven-year-old. In an attempt at establishing some normalcy for those kids who survived, officials are recreating their classrooms at a nearby school, right down to the art on the walls and the placement of desks and backpacks. That's good for the children; the rest of us need the exact opposite. We need to break the all-too familiar routine of gun-victim funerals and leaders who helplessly throw up their hands. On Wednesday, the president announced that Joe Biden would lead a task force on gun violence. It's a step in the right direction, but only if it results in legislation that makes a week of wrenching funerals begin to seem utterly unfamiliar.

Each year, the US spends enough on holiday decorations to end homelessness, so it?s difficult to discourage anyone in our culture to consume less, let alone stop shopping altogether. But sportswear company Patagonia is doing just that, and it?s not a cute marketing scheme. These people are serious about saving the environment and they?re insisting that you lend a hand.

Sun, 23 Dec 2012 00:22:24 -0800 Relationships Initiate Self-Improvement ? Dr. Diva PhD Online http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/relationships-initiate-self-improvement-dr-di http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/relationships-initiate-self-improvement-dr-di

Relationships Initiate?Self-Improvement

Posted by Dr. Diva Verdun on December 21, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Looking at the way our relationships are structured we learn to use them as mirror reflections to find the things within ourselves that we need to focus our attention on.? As long as we are looking at the person that holds our affections with a critical eye, we are not focused on the reality that the reflection we see in the mirror is actually pointing at the issues we need to address within.

No matter how much we try to change someone else we cannot.? People only change when they find a reason to make improvements within and not before. By chastising and criticizing your beloved, you are actually driving a wedge into the relationship bond.? You are breaking down the bridge from which love freely flows.? Where you see they need to make self-improvement is also a marker that is pointing directly back to you, so that you can find the very same similarities within yourself.

Relationships are a slippery slope.? You can get so caught up in attempting to improve someone else?s behavior and character, that you are not even aware of your own.? A relationship can only level off to the height of your awareness of self.? Thus, if you are not aware of the internal struggles you are experiencing, you will continue to attract others into your experience that bring trials and challenges that are designed to point you in the direction of your own healing.

The miraculous thing about bonding relationships is the growth that both parties receive in the experience. When both people are working to improve themselves, the need to criticize and chastise each other falls away and becomes true deep loving support of each others individual and spiritual growth.

To often we want to control and force the other person into their healing to satisfy our own needs and fears.? The amazing thing about relationships is that the other person is limited in their growth and healing unless we are growing and healing as well.? Thus, no amount of force, pressure or control can move them one step forward in their own growth and healing.

If there is no growth and healing on an individual level, your relationship will become stagnant and dry-up resulting in either a break-up, because one person is growing and the other is not, or level off into a complacent and withered experience void of love and passion as the you both continue to simply co-exist in your pain.

Relationships Initiate Self-Improvement - Dr. Diva VerdunWhat you desire in a relationship is yours to have.? The person you attract to you is always right in the moment that they come into your experience.? They mirror exactly all you are at that particular moment, both the good and the bad.? Sadly, most people are not adept in many cases to be aware of this truth and don?t realize that the relationship is also mirroring your bad qualities as well, when you see them in your beloved.

Seeing yourself in the mirror of your relationship can be a beautiful experience when you see love, compassion, passion, trust, and all the other wonderful things that come with the union you are enjoying.? Sadly, you do not readily welcome seeing the bad.? However, when you begin to exercise self-mastery, you become aware that all things that happen for your bad, both big and small, in relationships and otherwise, are all designed for your good.? You become fully aware that your good manifest through you and you become disciplined to use every opportunity to work on your own issues, knowing that as you do everything else will level-off to your new state of awareness, including seeing growth and changes in your beloved and the relationship.

Relationships are not simply about love and passion and all the wonderful things that come with them.? They are key elements in your own growth in the equation of higher levels of awareness and spirituality. When you begin to exercise self-mastery to go deeper to carve out your own negative thinking and deal with your own pain, your behavior and character patterns change, which directly improve your relationship by either ending one that does not serve you, improving the one you have, as both people grow in Divine Love as Spirit makes the adjustments, or you begin to attract new people into your experience with fresh new mirrors.

Namaste!

Sat, 22 Dec 2012 20:42:45 -0800 Top tech flops of 2012 tainted a good year for gadgets http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/top-tech-flops-of-2012-tainted-a-good-year-fo http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/top-tech-flops-of-2012-tainted-a-good-year-fo

4 hrs.

A lot of good things happened in tech this year.?The iPhone 5 premiered with 4G and a feather-light design. Google released its Nexus 7 tablet to go head-to-head with the Amazon Kindle Fire, and equipped it with Jelly Bean.?Samsung delivered a powerful one-two punch with the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II. And we saw a fair number of Ultrabooks that gave the MacBook Air?a run for its money.

But where there?s good, there?s bad. And there were plenty of major tech?fails this year. These awards go to the eight biggest.

Wrong-Way Award: Apple Maps
With all the anticipation surrounding iOS 6, many didn?t think twice about giving up Google Maps for Apple?s new Maps app. But once users switched over, the complaints and outcries that the iOS app was far inferior to Google Maps mushroomed. The app was riddled with errors ? including wrong addresses and warped-looking landmarks in the Flyover view ? while it lacked integrated mass-transit directions.

Apple eventually apologized for the Maps gaffe, and even recommended alternatives. CEO?Tim Cook probably put it best, saying, "We screwed up."

More:?7 Things Apple Must Do in 2013

False Start Award: Windows 8
After Microsoft?released a preview of the highly anticipated Windows 8, users were dismayed to find that, although the new system's classic "desktop" was practically identical to the Windows 7 interface, it lacked a Start menu. Microsoft had substituted the menu with a shortcut to the Start screen, which meant users are forced to leave the desktop just to launch an app that takes them right back to the desktop.

Talk about frustrating. The good news is that a number of third parties have stepped up to the plate with alternatives, including Stardock's Start8 and Samsung's S Launcher utility.

More:?8 Windows 8 Annoyances and How to Fix Them

Worst Sales Pitch: Dell?s ?Daily Deals?
During Laptop's annual Tech Support Showdown, we made three calls to Dell's?tech support line and got more than we bargained for. During the calls, Dell pushed premium warranties on us, saying we had won a daily drawing that would allow us to buy a $500 four-year extended warranty for just $317. Lucky us ? we were chosen to spend even more money on something we didn?t need! When we resisted, the representative rushed us through the call, barely attempting to answer our question, but routinely haranguing us to buy the warranty, because otherwise the next caller would get our "prize."

According to Dell, using "drawings" as a sales tactic is against company policy. However, aggressively pushing extended warranties and hardware purchases is not, as we experienced on two other calls where support reps seemed more interested in making a commission than solving our problems.

IP-(Uh)-O Award: Facebook
Although Facebook?s IPO initially set a record for technology companies by raising more than $16 billion, it quickly became the decade?s worst initial public offering. When the social networking giant went public in May, its initial offering price was set at $38, while the company was valued at $104 billion. However, a little more than two weeks later, Facebook shares had dropped dramatically to $26.90 per share.

As it turns out, Facebook?s inability to monetize mobile traffic has caused a lot of concern among investors.?Although the stock has rebounded from a recent slide, the share is still way off the debut price.

Biggest Rip-Off Award: Shared Data Plans
In June, Verizon unveiled its new Share Everything plans, which allow customers to pay a flat fee for each device, plus a single charge for shared monthly data, which ranges from 1GB to 10GB. The plan includes unlimited voice minutes and text messages and makes you pay for them, whether you need them or not. As a result, a 2GB data plan costs $100 on the new plan while 2GB with a limited number of minutes and texts cost $70 on the old plan.

AT&T followed suit with similar Mobile Share plans. However, neither of these shared-plan options lets you opt for limited voice minutes or data. Plus, you still need to pay an additional monthly fee as you add devices, whether it?s a tablet?($15 for AT&T, $10 on Verizon Wireless) or mobile hotspot ($50 for AT&T, $20 for Verizon Wireless). At least AT&T kept its individual plans for those who don?t want to go the shared route.

Broken Promises Award: BlackBerry?10
BlackBerry 10 has become somewhat of a punchline in the tech industry, with the release of Research? In?Motion?s new mobile?OS continually delayed at a time when the straggling smartphone-maker should be trying anything to keep up with its Android and iPhone?competitors. After a brief demonstration of BlackBerry 10 at BlackBerry World in May, RIM pushed back the operating system?s release until Q1 of 2013, and soon after slashed 5,000 jobs.

Although there are some features in BB10 that look promising, many BlackBerry loyalists have already jumped ship. We'll find out in January if RIM has a shot at a better 2013.

Bait-and-Switch Award: Microsoft Surface
When commercials for the Microsoft?Surface started airing, viewers were enthralled by the device's Touch Cover. It came in fun, eye-catching colors and magnetically snapped onto the device for an easy typing experience.

One would assume that if Microsoft was putting the Touch Cover into its Surface commercials, it would come with the Surface, right? Wrong. Turns out the Touch Cover is a separate purchase, and shoppers would have to invest an additional $119 for the accessory ($100 if you buy it with the black one).

Bad Idea Award: Google Nexus Q
Nexus Q could have easily made our list of most overpriced gadgets of all-time ... if it had actually come out. First shown and given to attendees at Google I/O 2012, the Nexus Q is a set-top box in the shape of an orb that streams music and movies to your home theater from Google Play ??and Google Play only.

While a $49 Roku box, a $99 Apple TV or a $99 Google TV box offers a variety of content services, even apps, the $299 Nexus Q didn't even have Netflix. Once you got over its unique design, the Nexus Q's main feature was allowing multiple users to add to the same playlist, something that was sure to create plenty of arguments among family members with different tastes. To Google's credit, the company quickly realized it had a dud on its hands, stopped accepting new orders and gave free units to anyone who had preordered.

Sat, 22 Dec 2012 18:56:56 -0800 Iran defense minister says NATO missiles harm Turkey security http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/iran-defense-minister-says-nato-missiles-harm http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/iran-defense-minister-says-nato-missiles-harm

DUBAI (Reuters) - The installation of Patriot anti-missile batteries sent by NATO members to bolster Turkey's defenses against a possible missile attack from Syria will only harm Turkey's security, Iran's defense minister was quoted as saying on Saturday.

NATO approved Turkey's request for the air defense system earlier this month, in a move meant to calm Ankara's fears of being hit by Syrian missiles.

Iran has strongly supported its Arab ally President Bashar al-Assad of Syria as he attempts to suppress a 21-month-old uprising against his rule. Tehran opposes the installation of NATO missiles as Western interference in the region and has said it could lead to a "world war.

"The installation of Patriot missiles in Turkey plays no role in establishing Turkey's security and this harms the country of Turkey," Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Saturday, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA). "The West has always pursued its viewpoints and interests and we disagree with the presence of Western countries in regional interactions."

Vahidi also denied that Iran is training Syrian forces to battle the rebels, ISNA reported. Iran considers itself, Syria's rulers and the Lebanese Shi'ite militant group Hezbollah as part of an "axis of resistance" against U.S. and Israeli power in the Middle East, but has denied accusations that it helping Assad militarily.

"Syria has no need for the training of its forces by the Islamic Republic of Iran, because Syria has a powerful military which has prepared itself for involvement with the Zionist regime (Israel)," Vahidi said.

Fri, 21 Dec 2012 20:45:41 -0800 Canada's "Ikea monkey" to spend Christmas at sanctuary http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/canadas-ikea-monkey-to-spend-christmas-at-san http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/canadas-ikea-monkey-to-spend-christmas-at-san

OSHAWA (Reuters) - Canada's most famous monkey will not be donning his tiny Santa suit with his adoptive family this year, after a judge ruled on Friday that the primate should stay at an animal sanctuary until at least mid-January.

The animal's owner, Yasmin Nakhuda, tearfully navigated through a throng of reporters and cameras after being told she would not be allowed to take the 7-month-old monkey home for the holidays. Another hearing is set for January.

Darwin, a rhesus macaque monkey, shot to social-media fame this month after he was video-taped scurrying around an Ikea store parking lot in Toronto, clad in a fake shearling coat and diaper. He was later captured by animal control officers.

Monkeys are not legal pets in Toronto, so authorities moved Darwin to a sanctuary near Oshawa, about an hour outside Toronto. Nakhuda, a real estate lawyer, then launched a court bid to try to get him back.

In a statement of claim filed earlier this month, Nakhuda said she was coerced into surrendering the monkey under the threat of criminal charges and told she would not be allowed to see him unless she cooperated.

If granted custody, Nakhuda said she plans to move her family to a nearby cottage town that does not specifically ban pet monkeys. Darwin has lived with the family in their Toronto home since July.

The young monkey escaped from an animal crate in a parked car as his owners shopped at Ikea in early December. The monkey became an instant Internet sensation, complete with his own Twitter account.

Nakhuda has posted videos on YouTube showing the monkey brushing his teeth and dressed up for Halloween. She told local media that she has a Santa suit for him to wear at Christmas and a bow tie for New Year's Eve.

Fri, 21 Dec 2012 17:03:00 -0800 Bank of Japan expands asset-buying program, sees uncertain economy http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/bank-of-japan-expands-asset-buying-program-se http://calvinchristen.posterous.com/bank-of-japan-expands-asset-buying-program-se

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- The Bank of Japan announced Thursday it would add about 10 trillion yen ($119 billion) to its asset-purchase program, while keeping its policy interest-rate target at 0 to 0.1%, citing "a high degree of uncertainty concerning Japan's economy." The announcement, coming at the end of the central bank's regular policy meeting, briefly sent Tokyo stocks tumbling and the yen rising, only to regain their previous levels minutes later, as investors digested the bank's statement. While some analysts had said the central bank might issue a target for inflation, the Bank of Japan said it would wait until its next meeting to discuss "the medium- to long-term price stability that the bank aims to achieve in the conduct of monetary policy." The central bank also sounded a downbeat note on the economy, saying Japan would stick to "somewhat weak movement ... for the time being," with the core consumer price index likely to remain flat. Among threat to the economy, it cited "a deceleration phase" overseas, as well as uncertainty surrounding events in Europe, the U.S., and with Japan's recent tensions with China. said that also sounded a more downbeat note on the economy
